Stayed at the Tree House Bungalows for a wedding anniversary. 10/10 would recommend based on price for value and beach front views.

Worth renting a scooter for a day or two to explore the island. The roads are 50% developed so you will be on a rough, muddy, dirt road at times. But 100% worth it to visit the beaches.

Would highly recommend the Italian restaurant on the island, as well as the food at Nest. Food at Tree house was tasty but a bit more $$.

Would recommend the night swim for the bioluminescent algae. About 200 feet from shore on the south side we swam off the boat and while you can hardly capture it with your phone it felt like you were swimming in a sea of fireflies. They lit up more the more you agitated your hands and feet.

Plumbing services and garbage on the island are rudimentary. Due to lack of infrastructure sewage is straight to the ocean, and garbage is burned as there is not pick up.

Would recommend for a visit and we recommend you bring a pharmacy of medications with you to Cambodia! While the food was tasty, our digestive systems certainly got a workout!

Koh Rong has a wonderful beach but is a clearly undeveloped island. There are hardly any roads and you have to be prepared to carry your luggage quite a long way.
Getting from Phnom Phen to Koh Rong is also complicated. First, you have to ride the bus for six hours on very busy quite rough roads. Then you should avoid overnight in Sihankorville. That city has been totally taken over by the Chinese. They intend to make it a single large casino for Chinese. They have dug up every street in the city so that they are now dirt roads probably to lay new sewerage networks. It might have been necessary, but doing it at the same time in an entire city would mean disaster for all trade. Then most houses are demolished to build hotels and casinos everywhere. Most of the signs are in Chinese only and if you do not know that language you are not welcome.

After leaving the building site of Sihanoukville, Koh Rong is a fantastic destination to visit. It took about 1.5 hours using Island Speed Ferry to reach the islands itself, as it stop at Koh Rong Salem first.
The island has plenty of beaches and restaurants and bars, although we found it a little more expensive than mainland Cambodia.
We did the glowing plankton trip for $5 per person one night, and we were really underwhelmed as you could barely see anything.
A great place for a nice relaxing beach destination though and well worth the $22 return ferry ticket!

Clean and warm sea, white sand on all beaches, virgin woods on hills over the beaches. Food is good and cheap. There's a lot to do - swimming, snorkling, walking, even climbing a bit. Trips with fishermens, waiting sunrise on the beach, taking a pictures of gloving plankton.

The first thing that strikes me is the beaches are teeming with biting ants. Many beaches do not have ants and if they do they are perhaps located far inland. However it is teeming here and you cannot afford to not wear candles to be on the sand.

The developments make the island too unnatural already.

We stayed at coconut beach which has its own dock . The beach is nice and quiet if you are looking for a getaway or a quiet time . Be careful on the beach of the insect bites . The options to eat well on the beach are not plenty . We stayed at Sunrise resort and the location , and attention was nice . The rooms were spacious , and had air conditioning.
We didn’t find Koh Rong amazing as it looks on the pictures so I would skip this area if I could ( my advise ) . We found Myanmar beach much nicer and the restaurants much better and cheaper

I will not recommend anyone to visit Koh Rong island, but definitely Koh Rong Sanloem. I am sure there are more beautiful areas on Koh Rong, but the village and beaches closer to the village are extremely polluted with trash. But I guess this island is perfect for backpackers after all.

This island is just incredible. There are no streets, no cars, no stress - if you need to experience something new everyday you might get bored quickly, but if you just want to let loose for a couple of days it might just be the island that you're looking for.

We visited Koh rong in April 2022, it is a beautiful island, 40 min boat ride from Sihanoukville. But a trek from Siem Reap. We can tell it is currently a skeleton of its former self. Post pandemic it is clearly been hit hard. the tourist dependant island has some run downs bars, abandoned businesses on 4k beach and maintenance is needed from top to toe. Coming here will help the locals, so spend lots of money - they need it.
• Travel / Ferry (40mins) from Sihanoukville to Main Beach. We paid $25 open return ticket per person. We got the night bus from Siem Reap.
• Resturants - We stayed 6 days and went to Encafe (great italian), Tree House (lovely bar on beach walk past white beach), Nest Beach Club (Amazing burgers / young traveller vibes / parties / cheap beer) and grabbed street food some days.
• Night / Nightmare Bus - Siem Reap - Sihanoukville Nightmare - 12 hrs of tec music, noisy bus drivers, horns being honked every 3-5 seconds, bumpy roads, over 1,000+ stops and a crazy bus driver - we didnt sleep at all/but we survived)
• Travelling Around the Island?
You can walk some of it, but a motorbike is needed $10 per day, rent from main beach/ near pier. Or boat Taxis.Or enjoy the area you are staying in.
• Where to stay? Depending on budget, you can pay £200+ per night for a resort, or you can do £25 per night for a basic beach front bungalow (like we did)
• Shops: Pharmarcies, Snacks, Clothes, Street Food, All your essentials are here - but at a premium. Expect to pay more as they had to transport it here.

******TOP TIPS*****
• Bring high level DEET spray. You will be eaten alive by Sandflies & mosquitoes as all the accomodation is mainly on the beach front.
• Bring CASH* no where takes credit cards and there is NO ATM!!
• Get a room with A/C.
• Bring Handsanitiser, not everywhere has sinks or handwashing facilities.
