If you are spending more than a couple of days at the lake of Ohrid make sure to visit Mountain Village of Vevčani around 15 km from Struga and its springs. Park the car in the center (near bar Gossip or Harem) and follow the indications for St. Nicholas Church (worth a quick stop) and Vevčanski izvori (about 10 minutes' walk after the church - at the fork take the left road). With the sound of water gushing freely out of the rocks and flowing freely, you'll relax wandering along well maintained tracks with plenty of tables for picknicking. It makes me thinking of a miniature Plitvice lakes nature park in Croatia, minus the lakes and the crowds. If you feel hungry, there are several restaurants on the way, including one at the very entrance to the park.

Trail around the spring in nature. It's peaceful and beautiful here being in nature. With a little luck, you can see some wildlife. Great place for photographs. I know they have a day tour from Ohrid, but it's rather expensive. I made friends with a local and paid him to take me here. It's an option.

The famous Vevchani springs are some of the most famous springs to be found in the Republic of Macedonia. The springs are located on the eastern slope of the Jablanica mountain range which run through the village of Vevchani at an approximately sea level altitude at over 900 metres. The largest spring is located at the opening of one of the many caves in the region. Below the largest spring are ten minor springs which all converge together. The most famous spring is "Jankov Kamen" which is situated at 1200 metres above sea level. Another spring is "Mala Livada" from which the water has a unique flavour and colour. It is situated at over 1600 metres above sea level. The highest spring is "Golina" situated at over 2000 metres above sea level. The rate of water flow from the springs is estimated to exceed the rate of 1500 litres per second, most notably in Spring.

About a 30 min drive from Ohrid I would say worth a visit if you have car.

As you drive through the village you can either park, if you can find a space or head up out of village following the signs to the spring.

As you reach it you will see on the right the water and some steps, if you turn right there is some car parking spaces up there.

Come back down and head to the entrance which is 20 Mkd, it’s only a small attraction with some English narration boards which is helpful.

There is a good solid walkway around with plenty of picnic tables and benches. It’s only small but nicely done and a solid pathway around. There is however plenty of hiking options beyond the spring but do go prepared as the terrain is rough and unmarked but there appear to be some tracks.

Nestled in the mountains near Struga is the beautiful republic of vevcani....and if you find yourself in Struga you need to make the 20 minute trip to vevcani. It's a lovely village with clear water running in numerous streams, with beautiful flowers, snug into the mountains, and lovely old traditional Macedonian houses. My friends and I walked up to the springs and enjoyed the clear, clean water, the little hiking trails and the beautiful nature. Make sure you bring your camera!

We primarily went there to see the springs. Secondary to get some authentic Macedonian atmosphere (we stayed in the somewhat touristy Ohrid). But we found something we did not expect.

The springs are interesting but not the greatest attraction. The walk up to the cave is done in 30 minutes with some stops along the way. The stone paths are quite nicely done (and we were unexpectedly in for more on that later on). It is interesting to see how the water is silently flowing from the rocks and vegetation and becoming a watery stream in just a few meters.

The price for entering the area is ridiculously low (20 DEN per person).

Like in all other interesting spots in Macedonia there is a total lack of storytelling and facts presented. Please raise the fee considerably and make some interesting posters.

Once out of the spring area we strolled around the village for a while. It is quite interesting to see how that water is defining the village. Everywhere the small streams are visible. Pouring out of rocks, road sides, and even buildings.

There are some very old and picturesque buildings in the village with their own distinct architecture. Right next to those there are beautiful new villas with beautiful gardens (again with springs playing a central role).

But back to the stone path. The village had created a beautiful scenic brick path from the lower town to the spring area. Small bridges cross the stream leading to nowhere but serve as nice platforms for taking pictures. This way of presenting the village and the stream is very nice and do take the stroll along the river! We were wondering whether the path was finished. We do not know (many things in Macedonia seem half finished, but hey, it’s Balkan). Maybe future visitors can tell.

However, we are constantly reminded that the Macedonians and the visitors are littering to a alarming level. For the love of nature, clean up and do not through garbage everywhere. It is such a shame when the country is so beautiful.

What a peaceful place! My wife and I walked up the hill in Vevchani just after a major snowstorm and spent an hour wandering around the paths. No one else was there, and we were comforted by the sound of the running water. Definitely recommend a stopover en route to Ohrid. . . . . A couple of suggestions: (1) Park at the top of the hill, not in the center of town. Save yourself a walk. (2) Check directions to Kutmicevica restaurant before your visit. We tried to find it and, even with the help of a sign outside the falls, we were unsuccessful, so ate lunch in Struga instead.

Vevchani springs are located in Vevchani village, which is short drive (30mins) from Ohrid. In order to see the springs you have to pay small admission fee. There is a path that will take you around the springs. You will need approx. 20mins to see the place. The main spring is found in the mouth of a cave, and others are located below that merge with the main source deep under the ground. There is also small church dedicated to St Nicholas. If you like hiking, there are hiking trails starting right in front of the entrance to the springs. You can choose to walk to Gorna Belica, Jankov kamen or reach the top of mountain Jablonica. Trails are well marked.
