Gilling mainline rally, which I attended , had 40 visiting 5 inch gauge mainline model steam engines. They ran, pulling passenger coaches and goods trains to a timetable. An extensive marshalling yard assembled the trains, using model, mostly steam driven shunting engines with all train movements controlled by 2 1/8th scale signal boxes. Points and signals moved by the old style signal levers in a Victorian interlocking signal frame . The signals were the semaphore type as per 1920's to NE railway standards. Awsome.

Good to hear that you were impressed by one of our Main Line Rally's. They are run twice a year, in May and August - current dates are on our web-site. Everyone is welcome to visit and enjoy the spectacle, light refreshments are available in the Village Hall.

We happened to be staying in the area and saw the advertisements for 'steaming' which is every Sunday afternoon in summer, with a couple of exceptions - check on their webpage. This is a fascinating spectacle, even if you aren't much interested in railways. It's also great fun - though well into our sixties we treated ourselves to a ride and had a great time. A particular highlight was the model of Stephenson's Rocket, but everything was interesting and the people were friendly and willing to answer questions. They also serve ice cream. A very enjoyable afternoon out.

Thank you 845JennyF for your kind words, our railway is run entirely by volunteers who are all enthusiasts and enjoy running their locomotives. We look forward to seeing you again, maybe over the August bank holiday when we will be staging our Main Line Rally, which is a pure spectical of live steam trains running all through the day.

We all had a couple of rides on these lovely little engines. It was good fun and the people running it were great. Don't miss the little refreshments room with hot and cold drinks and snacks.

Thank you grass_needs_cutting for your kind words! We all do out bit to make the Sunday afternoon rides session fun and enjoyable especially for the kids, (no upper age limit!), and I'll pass on to all of them your review.

Even if trains are not your thing, this is worth a visit. And the Gilling East village hall is right there so you can easily shelter if there is a shower.
