Unfortunately, time did not allow us adequate opportunity to properly explore this beautiful walled historic village. Pocitelj was damaged over the years by war but aparently much of the town has been preserved in its original form dating back to perhaps the late 1300's. Of particular interest was the construction material of the structures. The basic building material was stone, bu most impressive was that they used irregularly shaped stone slabs to construct the roofs.

The historic medieval fortified village of Počitelj, is located on the left bank of the Neretva River, on the main Mostar to Metković road, just south of Mostar
Whilst UNESCO heritage listed it doesn't appear to be heavily visited by tourists (a good thing), mainly because it is really only accessible by private cars.
Počitelj and its fortifications were built in the 14th century and as its strategic importance grew, the town evolved reaching its peak in the early 18th century. The main features are the 15th century fortifications at the top of the hill (which is accessible by car or foot), the Šišman Ibrahim Pasha Mosque and minaret, the hammam (17th century turkish baths), the Sahat Kula clock tower and the Ham of Šisman Ibrahim-Pasa (inn & stables - which is now a restaurant).
It is well worth climbing up to the fort at the top of the hill, as the views over the town, the river and surrounding valley are amazing. On the walk down, just past the mosque, are a couple of women selling freshly squeezed chilled pomegranate juice, which is so refreshing particularly on a hot day. There are a couple of cafe/restaurants in the village where it is worth trying the fresh burek and a cup of local coffee.

The city, many years ago, was a village that housed a hill with one of the most important forts in the region. It overlooks the river, and the entire village below. Close to the river is the Sahat Tower, the Šišman Ibrahim Pasha Mosque and the bell tower.
In fact, the coolest thing about the small town is that the entire village is built with stones, full of steps and small houses!
Therefore, the Ottoman architecture of the place attracts the attention of tourists in the region. Without a doubt, it's worth a quick trip to appreciate the region's unique beauty.

We stayed in Pocitelj for 3 nights. It is a peaceful place and nicer in its upper reaches away from the tourist shops. It is a bit of a climb from the bottom to the top in the heat, but you can actually park on a small road at the top and concentrate on the upper section.
For the most part, there was hardly anyone around in those upper reaches, though you do occasionally see people. In the upper reaches, the few sellers are selling things like iced pomegranate or sage juices, figs etc.
The place itself is an interesting mix of overgrown and abandoned and preserved/restored and lived in. Light is probably best in the morning for photos, but there's nice sunsets across the river.
In terms of exploration, the most interesting building is the tower on the walls we found. Be careful with kids as there are lots of unguarded drops both outside and inside the tower. As long as you can actually get in the tower (which is a big step) then you are good to go physically - that is the most challenging bit.
We enjoyed our time here.

This is a wonderful 15th century Ottoman fortress come village sadly damaged during the war but now reconstructed. Like most visitors I visited as part of a guided tour, which like must tours in Bosnia (and I am not nomrally a fan of such things) was fascinating and good company. The town itself is relatively small with pretty stone built houses, a small market and signs of life going on all around - women hanging out laundry, tending to their gardens and so on. The climb up to the fortress is easy for anyone with average fitness and didn't take too long, although i wouldn;t like to do it when its wet or covered in snow. The views of course are amazing and the history - well, it speaks for itself.

I think for my husband this was the highlight of our trip to Bosnia. We only spent 2 nights in Mostar. Half a day was taken up exoring Mostar Old Town.
The next day we went to arabica falls, the Dervish House and then early evening we went to Pocitelj. Piece of advice... fo after 6pm when the day begins to cool down.
We had lots of fun climbing and exploring this stone village ... the views were amazing.
You need around 2 to 3 hours to explore and then once you come down there are a couple or restuarants. We did not eat.
Highly recommend this place.

Although much was damaged during the war, Počitelj is still without a doubt one of the best preserved little crannies of old Bosnian life you can find.
You can easily spend multiple hours crawling through this little fort and village, and you can learn a lot about the region just from its character.
Will say though it is a little bit of a funny juxtaposition when you look out from some of the top ramparts and see the giant modern highway bridge under construction just one town over.

Pocitelj may be difficult to reach without a car, but we were fairly nearby while driving from Mostar to Kotor, and took the chance to stop in. We only had about an hour to spare, but were able to hike up through the village to some of the ruined towers/fortresses atop the hill. The village itself was very pretty and seemed mostly untouched by modern construction. The views from the top were amazing. The green Neretva River flowing past the green hills and mostly stone town were wonderful to see and photograph.
We were happy that we used this spot as a stop on our road trip - a great chance to stretch our legs and see some amazing sights.

On our drive from Dubrovnik to Mostar, we stopped at Pocitelj, which has suffered extensive damage during the 1992-96 war. Besides the ŠIŠMAN IBRAHIM-PAŠA Mosque (also known as Hadži Alija mosque), another highlight in this village is its fortress, said to have been built by King Stjepan Tvrtko in 1383. It played a strategic role in controlling the passage to the sea through the Neretva Valley, and was a main stronghold against the Turkish conquest.
It was quite a steep climb to reach the tower, but not too difficult.
The view from atop the tower was stunning and breathtaking! Totally worth the climb.

On the way from the Sufi monastery of Blagaj Tekija to the Kravica waterfalls, we took a break in the small town of Počitelj. The town has a 14th century fortress that is worth seeing and can be visited for free. There are free parking spaces in the actual town at the foot of the hill, and from there you can start the approximately 1km long walk to the various parts of the fortress. There are several viewing platforms along the way, from which you can enjoy a great view of the surrounding area.

I want to travel Počitelj and Blagaj Tekke from Mostar by bus , do you think single day is enough? and how can I find the bus terminals location, time schedule for this three places? thank you so much
Written September 8, 2015
I haven't seen any local buses at either of these locations, only private cars and mini buses on tour.
I asked my hostel owner and he told me the same thing, no public buses directly to these two sites.
We hired a car for 35 Euro and drove to 5 sites in a day with plenty of time to spare, both the places that you wish to visit are well within a half hour of Mostar.
I hope this helps.
