Bring the cameras down and have a stroll
Aug 2020 • Couples
Lots of birds, lovely on an over cast day, peaceful and romantic. The BBQs where all working, very very clean and well maintained bathrooms. Impressive trees and an overall peaceful area. The dam screams history with its sandstone walls and sweet little plaques explaining its history, and the excitement still lingers in the air. It’s a dreamy place to wander in the winter months and well recommended to wear boots if it has been raining.

BBQ at the Dam
Mar 2019 • Friends
We met up with family for a BBQ at Cataract Dam. The BBQs are always well maintained as are the shelters. There is a good playground for the kids as well as plenty of room for them to run around. The local birdlife is very friendly and will swarm if you decide to feed them.

Quick Stop
Nov 2018 • Friends
As the dam is not located far off the main road we called in for a look. There is plenty of parking and picnic facilities available. They also have free boiling water to make a cup of tea or coffee. You can walk or drive down to the dam. The view from the dam wall is very good. Unfortunately when we visited half the dam walk was blocked off by temporary fencing.

Every Time we have visitors from Europe we like to show our local Dam. It's including a park on top with hot plates. Always great for a day out locally.

Great stop
Sep 2018 • Family
An amazing dam and well worth the stop. However you can only go as far as the pump house as there is fences up and also one side has a fence up. I assume repairs may be happening on the stone. Disappointing but still well worth the visit. Great area for a picnic and a toilet stop.

Last minute stop on the way back to Sydney
Jan 2018 • Solo
Due to being bumped to a later flight I had some spare time so thought I would have a look at this.

OK< it's not right on the way back from Wollongong to Sydney but it's not much of a deviation and if you are interested in civil engineering or nature then this ticks both boxes.

It's really peaceful there and surprisingly the roar of the water in the spillway is only audible from almost where you can see it.

It is an amazing piece of engineering from the early 1900's. The supervising engineer did bridges as well as dams and examples of his work are all over.

There are extensive picnic grounds around at the top of the hill and the dam itself is only a short walk away or you can drive right down to it.

Attractive historic dam good for picnics
Nov 2017 • Family
The first of the Upper Nepean dams (1902), Cataract has parapets along the wall making for good pics. The downstream side has a great water jet. The picnic areas at the top are good, with facilities, but have only glimpses of the lake. You can walk or drive down to the dam wall - no facilities but you might have a picnic in the small garden there. The whole place retains the old signage and structures giving an historic feel, although the museum seems unfortunately shut down. Avon and Nepean dams may be more striking but Cataract is certainly a good place for a picnic.
