Beautiful church

We popped in to have a look around and there are some really interesting parts of the church due to its age. There at signs around explaining things and it is lovely and peaceful.

Worth a visit even if you are not religious.

ST PETERS CHURCH - CONISBROUGH
Nov 2019
Saturday 30 November 19, my husband and I went to visit St Peters Church at Conisbrough.

You step back in time went you enter this ancient church. It is described as the oldest building in South Yorkshire and is older than Conisbrough Castle, parts of the church date back to 759 AD.

There are some lovely Medieval stained glass windows in this church as well as an elaborately but crudely carved grave cover at the east end of the south aisle, which is Norman.

It depicts a contest between a knight and dragon, which is thought to be St George and the dragon. It was brought back to this country by knights who were fighting in the crusades in Turkey

Nearby is another grave cover which is even older Saxon, the carvings on this are badly worn but are believed to be ravens, which were commonly used symbols used in Saxon heraldry.

We spent an interesting hour in this lovely church and it is worth a visit if you are in the area of Conisbrough

Lovely old church in the centre of Conisbrough. Close to the shops and cafes/restaurants. Quite a bit older than the castle which is about 5 minutes walk away

The most beautiful church I’ve ever visited
Dec 2017 • Family
I live close to St. Peter’s & Im extremely proud to do so. It is a beautiful church with some fantastic features. I always feel welcome every time I visit. I was christened & married in this beautiful place & christened my children here. It is a very cherished part of the village, if passing through the village to see the castle the church is a must to visit. Not to be missed
