Perfect half day on the East Carson River
Oct 2020
We met at the shop in the morning to try on gear, do some paperwork and spend a half day on the water. My girlfriend really wants to learn how to fly fish and it was her first time. Chad was very knowledgeable and patient and did a terrific job. She landed two trout and hooked several more. She had a wonderful time and I enjoyed watching. I also tried the rod for a bit and landed a gorgeous rainbow. She is hooked for sure.

Fishing and relaxing
Aug 2020 • Couples
My friend and I wanted to fish for trout while visiting S Lake Tahoe with our wives. I am a fly fishing wanna be while my friend is well versed. We visited the outfitters and asked them for information on stream locations, flies or bait and best times. Not being an accomplished fly fisherman, I surveyed the store for spin casting options while another employee helped my friend select flies. I explained to one of the employees my predicament and he told me of several places where we could each use our expertise. He recommended the Little Truckee River for both types of fishing and showed me some spinners and spoons that he had used to catch trout during the warm weather due to the cold water of the river. The Little Truckee is a “wild”, catch and release non-live bait stream that runs out of Stampede Res., North of I-80 East, easily reached off the Hirschdale exit N., about 2 miles east of the town of Truckee. Unlike several of the rivers we fished, we caught trout both times during the day, it was warm in 80’s. We went during the week (twice) and found no crowds and a beautiful 7 mile road adjacent to Boca Res. These 2 reservoirs have multiple parking and camping areas and no crowds. You can fish from shore or launch your boat easily if you like lake fishing for all ages. We followed the narrow road to the last parking lot just below Stampede Reservoir. We arrived one day at 1:30PM and the next Day at 9:00 AM, both equally not crowded with 4-5 cars. After flattening our bards on the hooks, we exited the southwest corner of the lot and found a good trail along the stream. The river “screams” trout with its fast water, deep holes and twisting route through low brush, lightly wooded areas which provided easy open casting. Absolutely beautiful even if you don’t catch a rainbow or brookie, however we did catch trout! We caught and released 10 fish from 8” to a monster 23” fat rainbow I caught while sitting on old fallen tree by a deep hole (east side of the stream about 1/2 mile south of the parking area, can’t miss it) I caught it on a small orange spotted spinner recommenced by the Outfitter’s employee. I also caught fish on silver and black spinners. My buddy who, was fly fishing, caught fish on very small floaters. We saw maybe 10 fishermen, along the 3-4 miles we fished. Trout were rising all along the stream and we had a blast! I cannot guarantee you will catch fish but they are there and BIG! Good fishing and we might see you there!

Learned to think like a fish
Jul 2020
This place is everything that we could want in a fly fishing outfit -- if you don't like what you get here, it's probably just that you don't like fly fishing. It was our first time, and we went on a half-day with Steve. We learned a lot about how fly fishing works, how the fish think, and the different kinds of bugs. We learned that fly fishing is more about knowledge of the ecology than about technique. We were particularly impressed with Steve's care for the environmental health of the river and the fish (catch-and-release only).

We met at the shop at 6:30 AM. We did a little paperwork, got our boots, and followed Steve on a 30 minute drive to the West Carson River. The river was right by the road, but we couldn't see or hear the road while we fished, and it was a beautiful and rugged setting. There were no other anglers in sight. Steve explained about where the fish live, what they like to eat, and how they think. He changed our flies and positioning frequently to get the best odds on the fish as we worked up and down the river. And we finally caught two rainbow trout!

First time fly fishing
Nov 2018 • Couples
Our guide Brian did a great job with us. We spent about 20 minutes teaching us the basics of casting, realing, line placement, presentation, etc.
The first cast of the day we hit a big rainbow, although I couldn't real him in.
We hiked to 3 separate fishing spots, and each time we cast there was an immediate hit.

Would do this again.

Wonderful day on the East Carson with Eric
Nov 2018 • Couples
We booked a weekday fishing with TFFO, and Eric was our guide. We let him determine where we'd fish based upon the water and where there were fish. He selected the East Carson. We had not fished the East Carson before, so it was a new experience for us.

Eric was wonderful -- he was patient, had multiple rods, so we had multiple setups (streamer, dry and wet). He knew the river and where the fish would be. I said patient because each setup required a different type of cast, and wasn't upset when you didn't cast properly.

We did a full day -- had a great time. Caught some nice fish, both rainbow trout and whitefish. It's a healthy stream.

Thank you Eric!

Great fly fishing supply and advice source in South Lake Tahoe
Aug 2018
Needed some additional flies and supplies for a few days of fishing. This store has an outstanding selection of supplies and the staff is very helpful on local info and fishing advice. Stop here before heading out to a day of fine fishing in this area. Guide service is available.

Fly First Timers
Jul 2018 • Couples
We have fished extensively but never fly fished. For our 25th anniversary we booked a 1/2 day guided tour. We met at the shop at 7:30 and took a 30 min drive to a beautiful stream/river where we saw no one! I caught 2 and the Hubs caught one. We learned so much and had an enjoyable experience!

Great 1/2 day with Dan and Jason
May 2018 • Family
We had an awesome 1/2 day with Dan and Jason today. The weather was absolutely perfect and the views were stunning.... and to top it off... we caught fish!!

Our party had 3 adults and 2 kids (14yo, 12yo). We are all experienced with lake fishing, but none of us had done any fly fishing.

We met at the shop at 7:30 to get fitted with our equipment. The equipment was new and was nice quality. They made sure everything fit the way it should and we hopped into our vehicle to follow our guides for about a 30 minute drive.

Dan and Jason took their time to talk about the sport and were very knowledgeable about the nuances of the equipment and techniques for success. We made a few practice casts and we were off and running!

Your time with the guides starts when you hit the water... so 4 hours of fishing means 4 hours of fishing! It doesn't include drive time etc like other fishing guided excursions we've been on.

The entire family loved it and would do it again in a heartbeat. We each caught (and released) at least 3 fish, and had several exciting nibbles. These guys worked hard to make sure we got into some nice water and had a meaningful experience.

Don't hesitate to book a trip... you'll love it for the scenery alone.

Fantastic day of fishing
Jul 2017 • Solo
I did a fair bit of research on other outfits before ultimately deciding on TFFO, and I could not have been more pleased with my experience. Starting with my reservation and emails with Rob, and throughout the day of fishing with Steve, I was thoroughly impressed with everyone at this shop--so much so I had to go back the next day just to buy a hat to commemorate my visit.

I will echo another's post, the amount of instruction that Steve packed into one day was immense. He spent the entire day working on every skill imaginable and, by the end of the day, I felt like I had learned more in those six hours than I had in years of fly fishing and even managed to catch a few--and lose a few more--which felt like a bonus.

Even more than the fishing, I really enjoyed spending the day with Steve who was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate. The equipment was excellent--Simms waders and boots, Sage X rod and reel. I cannot recommend TFFO highly enough!
