Vikingsholm hiking trail
Jun 2021 • Couples
Hike is not 1.1 miles as stated on South Lake Tahoe website . GPS on my Husbands Garmin said it was more like 1.7 miles each way. Going down is easy but coming back up is not easy. It is definitely a more moderate hike back up. Altitude makes it harder to breathe. It was 61 out but felt much hotter (closer to the Sun so feels it feels much hotter). Beautiful views. Couldn’t get into the Vikingsholm for another 2 hours once we got there. We went around 1145 am. If it is going to be warmer than 65 you better go early. Was very crowded on the way back. Parking lot is small so can be difficult to find a spot. There is parking along the road. Parking lot is a pay lot 10$. Short staffed so tours weren’t available on the half hour as scheduled. Porta potty’s on top and bottom. Gift shop and museum on bottom . Bring water and snacks in case of a wait.

Great views of lake!
May 2021
Pretty easy trail with switch backs. Must be in decent shape to walk down and walk back up. Plenty of places to stop and rest, but easy wide trail, with no rocks to slip on.

Tough climb
Aug 2020
This trail was adjacent to the Rubicon trail. Being new to hiking, we mistakenly thought it was part of the same. But the mostly inclined climb lead to a great view of the lake.

Crystal clear water
Jan 2020
It was easy hike down when we admired great views. The historic Vikingsholm buildings was abandoned and looked very sad. I hope someone will take care of it soon. The lake was calm and crystal clear. We met a little duck there. The way up wasn't that difficult at all, maybe because it was winter time and the temperature was just right. There was no water on this trail, so come prepared. Unless you don't mind drinking from the lake or the streams.

A must hike
Nov 2019
As you start down this very steep hike you will wonder if this is worth it. Well it is and the best part is the hike back up it much easier. We are in our 70s so you can do it.

The Vikingsholm trail leads downhill to the Vikingsholm historic site. Paved trail with some loose gravel easy down slightly more difficult straight up incline on return.

Trail to the Castle
Oct 2019
Easy walk down, cardio work out going up but still ok. Disappointed that the castle was closed even though the website said it was open. It shut down at the end of September :( It was still nice to walk around it and into the courtyard. The walk along the base of Emerald Bay was nice. The ducks were so friendly walking right up to you (for food)!

Great hike with beautiful views
Oct 2019
Pay parking provides access for all state parks for the day. The hike down is easy with gorgeous scenery. The castle is rustic elaborate; the history of it quite interesting. Picnic tables at the beach and a dock to walk out on too. The hike back up is a bit steep and if you’re not acclimated to the high elevation it can be a challenge. We took along a canister of Boost and took several breaks on the return hike, enjoying the beauty of the area. We plan to do the hike again when we return to SLT.

Worth the effort!
Oct 2019 • Friends
Pay for your parking. Spectacular scenery all the way down to the Lake and backup again. Take time to to are the house if it is open. And joy the Lake! This review would have been 5 stars were it not for the fact that the trail can be demanding if you're not in shape and prepared for a moderate uphill climb.

This is the trail that brings you to Vikingholms and Emerald Bay
Sep 2019
This trail has superb views and it is very well laid out, going down was easy as it leads to the Emerald bay, vikingholms and the beaches. Return trip is uphill and demands some effort if you are not in a good physical shape.
