Muchuan Bamboo Forest Hiking
May 2012
Muchuan is a small town in southern Sichuan Province. It was three hours' drive from Shiyangchang Bus Station in Chengdu to Muchuan and another 20 minutes' drive from Muchuan County to the Bamboo Forest southward on the G213 highway. I traveled with two couples and we intended to walk through the whole site clockwise but we didn't finish and called a taxi to drive us back to Muchuan. The forest is in a smaller scale of the "Shunan Bamboo Forest". It was not dense. And It was a good place to have a walk, but it was a bit strenuous to finish within one day. It has a vehicular road and many people just drive their cars into the forest and rest or play majiang in one of those tea gardens along the road at each sites. We saw many cyclists passing by. It is a good route for cycling. After we bought the ticket, the first major ascent on the dirt road takes a lot of energy. We have to be careful of the cars from behind and it could get worse if it rains. At half way we got to see the exposed Danxia landform carved by ancient local people and views of the farm terrace down in the village. We didn't know there was a short cut through a small tunnel: the other side of the tunnel was where we had our lunch, a big dining place named Hongyuan Renjia. We could've skip the loop and go through the tunnel. When reached the north at a cliff we made a right turn heading towards the what we saw the the crowdest site in the Forest: Many cars parked outside and many people rafting bamboo rafts in the lake. I guess they are families outting for weekend. My friends were tired of walking and decided to have a longer rest beside the lake. I took my excursion to the highest point of the Forest in a 3-floor pagoda. Panoramic spectacle was amazing at the highest floor of the pagoda. After another 2 hours' walking we arrived "Xiaodongfeihong", a waterfall hanging high up on the mountain. It was also the icon of Muchuan Bamboo Forest. It is a small waterfall from distance but when you get closer, it is quite stunning and huge. Above all, our trip could been better-planned and less strenuous if we did a better homework. Bur the information about Muchuan B F was not ample and the tourist map at the entrance is not informative either.
