A wonderful group of villages with well-preserved houses (many turned into guest houses) and a fantastic view over the valley and its peaks.
It's recommended to drive your own car, stop and walk around on foot before going to the next village.
The place is free to go so far, but it seems like they are building a tourist center and that the access will be charged in the near future.

Zhonglu ist beautiful, it is stunning, you will be amazed. The houses are neatly decorated, the village seems way more authentic than Jiaju, another scenic spot in the Danba area. Villagers are friendly and keep to themselves. When you reach the village there are two different paths, one to the left and one to the right passing the medical station. (there is a little grocery shop right at the "intersection" where you can get water and such - which wasn't available in Jiaju) The one to the left you should take to stroll around and soak in the beautiful landscape. When you come back follow the other path until you reach a gate with big red lanterns. The people who run this kind of homestay will cook for you the most delicious local cuisine at 30 RMB per person (it is a set meal and it is so much food). We took a taxi up the dirt road to get to Zhonglu from Danba for 50 RMB, as it turned out the road was in a very bad condition and the car really suffered we gave the driver 70 RMB. So anything between 50 and 100 is a good price to get up there. We decided to hike down and that took about 1,5 hours and was very worthwhile. Back at the bigger street you can just wave to get a ride back to Danba for about 5 RMB per person. Have fun, we sure did!

The town of Danba (itself a bit of a backwater) is known for the beautiful ancient Tibetan villages, of which the most famous is Jiaju. So naturally the lion share of the crowd goes to Jiaju. In fact, other than Jiaju, the town is surrounded by countless other quite similar villages, all of which have the possibility to do a homestay. Among these alternatives, Suopo and Zhonglu are the most known.
In Zhonglu, one sees hints of commercialization, but as of 2021 it's still quite minimal, definitely nothing compared to Jiaju. The village itself is quite sprawling, and bigger than it might appear at first, with endless footpaths going all around. The village (like all the others) is built on a steep hill, that keeps going up. Even when you think you've reach the top, it just keeps going -- from the town of Danba to the highest point of Zhonglu is an elevation gain of well over 1,000m!
As other people have mentioned, the highlight is spending the night at a homestay! The food is great, and the vibe is so relaxing. I strongly recommend it.
One other thing -- before I went, I tried to find information about whether to go to Zhonglu or Jiaju, or both, and I did not find much. So I would like to say unequivocally -- there is absolutely no need at all to visit Jiaju. It's just a vastly more commercialized version of Zhonglu. The houses might be a bit more ornately decorated, but otherwise the village layout, the architecture, and the mountain scenery is the same. If you visit Zhonglu, there is really no reason to visit Jiaju.

Traveling uphill to the village by car, we were already in awe of all the colorful Tibetan houses. Most of them are so colorful (I would say more colorful and neat than those in Juaju Tibetan village nearby). It is still so untouched we hardly see any tourist this time of the year.
Our driver left us at the top to stroll down the village ourselves. The small winding roads and small walking paths of the village are just perfect for a stroll during this beautiful autumn day. Every colorful Tibetan houses with the hundreds of golden color corns hanging out to dry at the front of the house, and the mountain backdrop is just so surreal, as if bringing us back in time.
At one stop a Tibetan family even let us tasted their freshly steam buns while refusing to take our money. I think Tibetans are some of the friendliest people around.
Zhonglu is a gem authentic Tibetan village that is still not on most tourist map. The road widening project is already on going to facilitate more tourists. The locals told me Chinese tourism authority will start to collect tourist entrance fee soon, just like Jiaju Tibetan village.
While Jiaju Tibetan village is more of a place where you just sit and enjoy the views, Zhonglu TIbetan village offers the opposite. It is a village that requires you to stroll around to discover its beauty.
Visit there while you can, before it loses its charm.

Lovely place with character and one of the three must-see Danba Villages. My driver showed me an archaeological site, newly discovered with a Chinese marker - a tiny stone coffin which I could see some remains still there. See the photo.
My visiting was early April 2014.

Zhonglu is one of the three major sites in Danba, the other two are Jiaju Tibetan Village, Suopo watchtowers. You have to drive up for 20 minutes from the town to the village. Stay at Sangdan's guesthouse, very nice and friendly people. A good travel time would spring and summer.

Zhonglu is a typical Danba village, representing the local Tibetian-influenced architecture and uncountable old nature stone towers.
From the main valley, you can not see Zhonglu. To arrive there, you have to climb a tiny road by car. Actually this road is in bad condition due to minor landslides, so the entrance fee is skipped and there are only few tourists. The village is spread over a wider mountainside, in the center there is a small plain with farmland. The tracks wind up following the geographic necessities. A lot of 3 storey farm house combine with the nature stone towers dating from old centuries.
You can find a really old small monastery with some monks on the end of the lower village road. For a decent offering, the monks will show you the interior of their temple.
We didn't find an open restaurant, but a small shop providing beverages, fruits and cookies.
Zhonglu is a typical Danba ancient village. At every corner, you have a new angle of view to their houses and towers. If you want to visit only one Danba village, I recommend Suopo Village, where in my opinion the density, the farm life and the shape of towers of is even more stunning, but the access to Zhonglu is faster and easier.
