Yulin Grottoes is a very cheap place in Guazhou. Compared with Mogao Grottoes, although the scale of the grottoes here is not as large, the preservation of the grottoes is better than that of Mogao Grottoes as a whole. Most importantly, Yulin Grottoes in autumn is very comfortable, with a gentle breeze under the blue sky and the Yulin River flowing through it, making people wish they could stay here for a few days.

A nice stop , worth visiting grottoes without the massive crowds of Mogao- you will likely be alone. Not as comprehensive or as impressive as Mogao but still quite amazing. Most of the caves are redone by Ming dynasty but original sculpture bases from Tang and Song can be observed and the paintings are generally in good shape as well, with a fair number from the Western Xia period. Tour will cover about 6-7 caves and last about 1 hr. About a 2.5 hr drive from Dunhuang, so if you are on the way to or from the town it makes sense to visit but would not advise going if you are in Dunhuang already- the Mogao will be more than sufficient and you will likely feel the long drive was not worth it.

The tour showed us about 6 caves. Although, this is not as much of a tourist attraction site as the Mogao Caves, I had a great experience here. The tour guide's English was great. The paintings were great. I still recommend this place despite it is not known among foreign or local tourists.

These Caves are situated about 60 km south of the road from Dunhuang and Jiayuguan , along the old "Silk Road" . The caves were excavated on the cliffs on each side of a little canyon where the Yulin river still flows .
There are 42 buddhist caves excavated from 7th to 14th century . Inside there are hundreds of beautiful wall paintings , not less impressive than those in the Mogao Caves .The green blue colours of paintings are original and very rare . There are also a lot of statues which were added in 19th century which are less interesting . The visit is guided by local guides.
Unfortunately , even in this remote place , you can't take pictures inside the caves !
This site is really worth visiting as the site has been very well restored , the caves are very interesting , the geological position is unique , and , moreover , there are no tourists !!!!!
I strongly recommend this visit if you are going from Dunhuang to Jiayuguan !

We were very impressed by this site. The Yulin river flowing on each side of the caves adds a peaceful dimension to this visit. We were practically the only group there when we visited in early June. Many of the caves are different in style and period than the Mogao 's. This was a very relaxing visit. We were lucky to have an exceptional guide and we learned a lot. We ate lunch onsite in an excellent restaurant. Overall, we had such an interesting half-day there that the drive back to Dunhuang did not seem as long as the one getting there.

We went with a tour group.
The caves were by the side of Yulin river.
The whole place is one of peace and calm
From the car park, we had to climb a flight of steps downward.
We were shown 5 caves : #11, 12, 13, 16 & 6.
No photography allowed.
The Chinese language guide did a good job explaining to us the great artwork and murals.
Regret that we were not shown Caves #2 & 3 which have Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara in "Water Moon" Form (水月觀音)
It is worth visiting.
