One of the main reasons why people visit Rabka Zdroj is to go hill walking. All around Rabka are the Gorce hills which are partly wooded. There are way-marked walks from the Park Zdrojowy up through the hills, the most popular route being that of a walk up Maciejowa. A traveller's rest at the top of Maciejowa is the reward for climbing to the top. It's a typical Polish walker's shelter that offers simple meals, drinks and an optional bed for the night. Outside is a barbecue area and seating for picnics.

It's the climb and associated views up the hill that make this route so popular. The scenery is beautiful and the Tatra Mountains can be glimpsed at points along the way on clear days.
Walkers pass fields of wheat and hand-made haystacks in late summer, There are wooded areas to climb through and meadows. All kinds of wild flowers can be found along the route. In spring are the bright yellow 'kaczanki' or duck flowers and primroses, summer brings a host of various flowers that include those from the pea family, daisies, buttercups and a host of others. This is a good place to see a natural meadow. There is the occasional cow or horse tethered in a field and lots of other walkers who always greet each other with 'dziendobry' which means 'good day'.

Looking down on the valleys below from the heights of the hills, the multicoloured houses, each in their own generous plot make a very pretty picture.

Occasionally, one meets horse riders, mountain bikers and quad bike riders. This is Rabka's outdoor playground and people come from far and wide to walk up Maciejowa hill.

If you still have energy remaining when you get to the top, a level plateau leads into the Gorczanski National Park and more stunning scenery. Hill walkers could continue walking south, stopping at various shelters for the night.

I'm not really certain if this place should be listed here on TripAdvisor. It is one of many hills around Rabka, in the group of mountains, called Gorce, part of Carpathian ridge. Longest trail, (red markings) of Polish Beskidy mountains passes the peak, and just below the summit it is joined by short black trail. Maciejowa is also known for it's ski lift on northern slopes, with bottom station in Rabka-Zdrój Plasówka. Restricted views from higher parts, but superb views from approach trail from Rabka. So, basically, a hill similar to many in vicinity. But for many hikers Maciejowa stands for a mountain hut, called "Schronisko" or "Bacówka", located about 0,5 km east from the peak, which is one of many owned by PTTK (Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society) such places in Polish mountains. But that requires a new listing of its own here, on TripAdvisor.

Maciejowa is the hill where we would hike a lot as kids. The view from the top is just amazing with a beautiful panorama of Tatra Mountains in the south and Babia Góra in the west. The hike is pretty easy, kids will love it (especially since you can find a lot of wild berries on the way). If you are into MTB, you will enjoy this trail as well. The mountain hut at the end offers delicious Polish food. If you choose to visit in the Winter you can try their bigos and mulled wine or beer. But honestly, anything you eat there is absolutely delicious. An you will do so in a beautiful scenery!
