About
The Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) was built by David Walsh to house his collection of ancient, modern, and contemporary art. Located on the banks of the Derwent a short ferry trip from Hobart, Mona is Australia’s largest private museum with three levels of underground galleries, which visitors explore with custom-built, handheld technology, called the O, that tells them about the artworks on display. Mona is David’s playground and experiment: we need art, he says, but for what? Mona is also home to two wineries and a brewery, several bars, and restaurants, luxury accommodation pavilions, a library, and a tennis court.

- MalapropTallebudgera, Australia112 contributionsSuperb different art gallerySuperb art museum. Lovely pieces in a spectacular building. The app worked really well too. I’m not certain it’s suitable for young children thought there were plenty there. If I lived in Tassie I’d visit this often.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 18, 2023
- Brendan WBirmingham, United Kingdom1,166 contributionsWonderfully Filthy. As visitors from the UK we have visited many museums & and art galleries in lots different countries & this was the best experience we have ever had. If you are broad minded & like rique fun, put this incredible place on your bucket list. It's certainly not for the fainthearted, but as a family with 3 generations, we loved every minute, the O app is outstanding & advises when approaching explicit displays & we hope to visit again from doom laden Post Brexit Britian.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 24, 2023
- Christine S4 contributionsPutting the F back into ArtAn icon of Hobart that's for sure! We visited around 11am on the day we flew into Hobart from Sydney with out 8 month old so we were certainly a bit tired. With both of us art teachers we knew this was a must see. We booked tickets in advance and drove there from Hobart. The drive is fairly short but parking is very limited so definitely keep that in mind if choosing to drive. The gallery is constructed around a lift and you start at the bottom. It is pretty tight and dim down there which is completely different to most large galleries. The collection is certainly impressive. Must visit for art nerds, history buffs and those that love a bit of a scandal. But do pack your walking shoes and some sustenance, it's a biggun. It is a pretty tricky gallery to visit with a pram as there are plenty of levels and areas connecting each area more efficiently via stairs so certainly something to keep in mind. I found next to no parent rooms through the gallery, or areas to sit. This made it challenging to breastfeed or change a nappy so unfortunately we had to speed through the remaining part of the gallery. Great areas to visit when you've risen from the depths of the gallery. Areas for kids to run around, restaurants, live music.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 4, 2023
- hmb2302Brisbane Region, Australia73 contributionsMONA is a stunner!I had read and heard great reviews about MONA since it opened. Finally visited Tasmania after a long while and MONA was high on the list. On approach, the building is distinctive and impressive, carved into the cliffside by the river. We arrived at 10am and expected to finish looking around until lunchtime. How wrong I was. By lunchtime we had seen half of the building and exhibitions. Lunched at Faro. High end dining, presentation and service was exceptional. Experienced the James Turrell installations, highly recommend. Resumed strolling through the rest of the museum and exited via the gift shop just before 5pm. A day very well spent. The art is fantastic and thought provoking and the architecture of the building is stunning.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 16, 2023

- Howard AAuckland, New Zealand404 contributionsA Place to be Seen More than to SeeThere is some marvelous art here are some playful labelling. I loved Obsidian by Jonsi and some of the most amusing pieces. However, the great is randomly interspersed among a lot of nonsense. My generation impression was that someone with too much money and no taste was struggling to find things to waste cash on. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am not unfamiliar with being pretentious. Much of MONA seems to be pretentious for the sake of being pretentious; a hipster guide to the art of being artsy. There was a whole area of adult only art that was meant to shock. None of it was actually shocking but it was trying very hard.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 11, 2023

Took the catamaran from Hobart Harbour to one of the most interesting, challenging ,engaging and well designed galleries I have ever visited. Staff were without exception very friendly and helpful make sure you wander outside don’t miss the outdoor bar, eateries laid out around a lawn. Amazing experiential day outVisited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 16, 2023
- FithartWestern Australia, Australia9 contributionsDefinitely not for everyoneI went in with an open mind. The building design and views over the water are incredible. I generally found the overall layout difficult to navigate, even with the app maps. If their were themes in areas of the museum, I didn't get it, so most of MONA seems disorganised to me. Many of the exhibits were very interesting, but some were just silly nonsense to me. If you are sensitive to stimulation, avoid this place because you will be overloaded for much of the time both visually and sound. Many of the exhibits had inadequate lighting, making me want to pull out my phone to light in the piece.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 18, 2023
- irishnzWellington, New Zealand116 contributionsHighlight of our tripI loved it. I see there are various opinions, so you’ll have to go and then decide. We agree it was a highlight of our trip to Hobart. From the posh pit ferry, to the wonderful grounds, and then interesting art, I definitely recommend. Get the app before going underground as it can be hard to download. There was so much to see, but not overwhelming. Thought there was such a range, it was incredible. Various experiences to I think people of all ages could enjoy.Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 19, 2023
- Silvana J62 contributionsWorth visit.Different, unusual and unpredictable exhibition, but interesting. It's great place to visit, it's big, open space inside and out. You will see that some people are very confused with exhibitions, but some loved a lot. In same time is modern and old, with Faraon and mix technologies, sex, death and life. Loved outdoor with very relaxed atmosphere; food and drinks and playground for kids. You can drive or go with Ferry. We spent 3 and a half hours, combined with outdoor.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 21, 2023

Everyone told us we had to go to MONA when in Hobart. So we spent over $100 getting standard return ferry tickets and entry to MONA. At the ferry, signs say download the MONA app which I did and got charged for. The ferry ride is short but nice enough but on arrival at the museum you are met with 99 stairs to climb. We walked around the outside and enjoyed the pieces on display and gardens, then went inside to start a circular staircase down 3 floors underground. At the bottom there is an option to pick up a free headset and phone size info box. There are no signs for the artwork, you have to point the app at the art to find it what the heck it is supposed to be. No directions given and it’s like a rabbit warren to navigate. We got lost and ended up backtracking several times. Everyone is looking at these phone sets and some areas were poorly lit and narrow. After 30 minutes we gave up. Trying to find our way out, I inadvertently put my hat on a row of stone blocks my Husband and I thought were seats. We were smartly told by an employee not to touch the “ artwork” as our hands were probably filthy! How rude. If you don’t want people to touch, then put it behind glass. We found it overpriced and pretentious and didn’t understand any of it. Do yourself a favour and save the entry fee. Just get the ferry and walk around the outside....

We took the Mona Roma ferry from Hobart which is normally AUD22 per person, however as this was a once in a lifetime trip we upgraded to the Posh Pit at AUD55 per person. For the extra money you get some canapés and as much alcohol as you can drink in 20 minutes. Worth doing one way but probably not both.
The outside of the museum, my favourite, was so different and offered great views across to Mount Wellington and the bay. There are lots of seating areas and some lovely bars and an open fire pit where they cook meat and vegetables.
Inside is a lot of modern art which may not be to everyone’s taste, certainly not mine, but an interesting experience. Allow 3-5 hours to see the place, probably more towards the top end if you’re eating.
Entrance is AUD30, 27 if a Senior, but there’s several areas where you’ll have to pay extra. Prepare to have your senses bombarded by sight and sound.

We took the MONA boat up to the museum and when buying the tickets at Hobart waterfront, I was asked what time I wanted to return. Having not been there before I felt this was a tough question so I took the open return ticket. I was then advised that without booking a time, I might not get on my return ferry of choice but even in Hobarts February Regatta weekend, there were not so many guests using it so there was plenty of room. There is no price difference booking a time or open return so I would book a time and then turn up when you are ready. If the two coincide great, if not I’m sure they won’t leave you there. The ferry trip up and back was very enjoyable given a great opportunity to see the waterside and what was going on.
A lot has been written about MONA and yes you will like / dislike it in different measures. It is an amazing complex and the architecture is very impressive as are some of the exhibits. I hope you enjoy it all! One last note, the prices of anything to eat or drink are mouth watering. Take some supplies with you.

Upon arriving at the venue I was impressed with the grounds, buildings and scenery back towards Mt. Wellington. Food was good too, but that’s where it pretty much ended for me. Upon entering the museum, we were directed to start at the bottom floor (about 5-6 floors down) and it felt like being in a massive underground lair, like something that belonged to one of James Bond’s villains. The building costs for this venue must have been astronomical and initially I was definitely impressed and was looking forward to seeing the art. I don’t know if the artworks have changed at all over the years but the stuff that I saw on display was quite disturbing and I wondered if other punters sensed the sinister undertones. I was waiting to arrive at a floor where there was a bit of lighter content, but this did not eventuate and there seemed to be a clear theme of satanic underworld going on. Maybe others have become desensitised, but I felt quite horrified to see a real skinned kitten, grotesque pornography, child abuse and beastiality photos, not to mention satanic ritual visuals. There was a video of the infamous “spirit cooker” Marina Abramovic” who is a well-known satanist in one of displays so at this point I just wanted out. I would not recommend MONA to anyone and am absolutely shocked that children are allowed admission. It was not a feel-good experience at all! I am not a religious person, nor a prude and being an artist myself I do appreciate abstract and controversial art, however I felt this collection was overall extremely dark with blatant sadistic/satanic content which I obviously don’t subscribe to. I wish I did not throw away my $60 and would not return even if I was paid.

I was expecting to find a much better museum (not the structure itself which was very nice) but the works displayed at the museum.
A lot of works were very contemporary and not very interesting in my opinion.
Moreover, the entrance price is quite high and to reach the museum is quite painful because it is located very far from the centre of Hobart (10 km. maybe).

Don’t bother with this poor excuse for a museum. Although billed as “old and new” art, it is 90% new art, mostly of bad taste from artists you have never heard of. The audio tour uses antiquated iPod technology that didn’t work for me and when I complained about it I was told by two different “docents” that it was my fault! The whole experience is a rip-off probably geared to the thousands of clueless cruise ship passengers that visit Hobart daily. The owner/ professional gambler must be having a big laugh about its success

This is such a one-off place it is hard to describe in a short review. The building is stunning, in a very modern, industrial way. There is a pinch point at the entrance whilst everyone gets their tickets, deposits bags (not enough lockers) and goes to the toilet (not enough of these either). Then you have to go down several floors underground to start your visit. We only had a short time so chose not to collect one of the complimentary hand held devices (you can use an App on your phone too). We did not realise that this would be the only way to get any information about the displays, so feel we missed out. A lot of the building is very dark, which adds to the atmosphere but would not be good if you are poor-sighted. The art ranges from old to ultra modern, strange to erotic. It definitely provokes a reaction, but beware if you are easily offended. Outside the grounds are less controversial and more architectural, with views over the water to downtown Hobart. An unforgettable experience!

We took the ferry from Hobart Marina which is well worth the price as you get a lovely cruise up the river and the building was designed to be viewed from the sea. We went to MONA because it's 'the thing to do when visiting Hobart' but we live in London and have lots of opportunities to see modern art and we're not massive fans but this art gallery blew us away!
Firstly, the building is absolutely spectacular and the way the art is presented is brilliant. There are no straightforward galleries here, and no obviously logical presentation of the artworks so every time you turn a corner you're confronted with something surprising. Lots of the exhibits were just really interesting artefacts rather than paintings so there was lots to discover.
Bottom line - even if art galleries aren't your thing, go to MONA!

Chose to visit here based on the hype this place seemed to generate. Were told to give it at least 4 hours yet were on our way back to Hobart in 2. Honestly have never been to an art museum and not “got it”, but this was a first. It’s all very modern/contemporary, with the actual building itself providing more interest than the art. You’d have to be very into your modern art to appreciate the pieces. I really wouldn’t recommend going if you are only a moderate (or less) lover of modern art! Disappointing, and expensive, waste of an afternoon in Hobart.

Finally visited Mona after many trips to Hobart (which I love to visit) & after my best mate kept asking when I was going to go!!
It was impressive in terms of the scale of the whole undertaking & I’m glad I have visited (go by ferry as it is part of the experience).
The problem I have with Mona is that I probably wouldn’t bother going there again. 50% of the art was impressive - the other 50% was a bit ‘meh!’ Lots of Tasmanian artists (which it’s great that David Walsh is supporting them), however their work wasn’t really world standard.
True genius always shines through, whether it is modern art or not.
Turn on the lights & display the magnificent
Brett Whiteley & Sidney Nolans where I can see them - not tucked away in some random dark corner. Also, I don’t want to pay extra for ‘additional exhibitions’ - I have already forked out enough thank you : )

Definitely wheelchairs access, they do have glass lift to take you to upper levels, however on the day we went, the glass lift wasn't working later during the day because someone was being silly with the lift - so in this situation, I have no clue if they do have a backup plan, for example, you're already in the upper level, how do you get down when it's the lift is not in working order? Best to contact MONA directly and ask them if they do have a backup plan? In short, "yes" it's wheelchair friendly.

Hi all, planning to visit on 19/1, taking my 8yo and 10yo, both love Art and frequent art galleries. Anyone think if it would not be a good idea with the MONA FOMA event on? Thanks.
Written January 2, 2018
Personally I wouldn’t take my children if they were this age. Some of the art is disturbing and not suitable for such an impressionable age. The ‘Museum of Everything’ is fantastic as one mentioned, however you need to use the headphones and listen to the narrative to fully understand what you’re looking at, and when it takes 2 1/2 hours to venture through this properly, is an 8 year old going to do this? There are some exhibits that are still on my mind some 6 years after seeing them, search ‘The Painter’ by Paul McCarthy. Perhaps walk through yourself prior to taking the kids in, bottom line is that you know what they can handle better than anyone, enjoy it, Paul

The ferry and bus appear to be the same price and are good for one way or round trip. Is it possible to take the ferry one way and the bus the other or does that effectively double the cost?
Written December 18, 2017
You can do both without price doubling but ferry beats bus hands down
The sightseeing on ferry is amazing and adds an extra adventure to the day
A bus ride is a little ho hum
If you go by ferry you can upgrade to Posh Pit and if you're One of the first twelve people to book you can also request a complimentary winery tour ticket which includes a half-hour private introduction to Moorilla , which is Monas winery and includes wine tastings

Ferry is very modern & staff are willing to assist if help needed . Hope you enjoy your visit , it's a beautiful place
