Of course there is a mad rush to get onto the tram, but the trip is only 5 mins. A good way to avoid the steep walk.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 30, 2023
- RubyBlue77Hemel Hempstead, United Kingdom63 contributionsTicket office hidden awayIt is not easy to find the ticket office for the funicular ! When you get off the boat, walk to the right, where you will see the arched entrance to the funicular itself. Carry on past here, where you see a white rounded edge bar called "Bar Grotto", the ticket office is roughly opposite here, tucked away slightly. There are three queues, two for funicular and one for buses only - make sure you get the right queue. There are so many people around it makes it difficult to see signs etc.. Once you get ypur ticket head across to thefunicular entrance. The queue moves relatively quickly and you put your ticket into a turnstile. The ride itself has some good views and at the top there are toilets just outside of where you come out.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 24, 2024

- javier gBellflower, California155 contributionsAmazing viewsGreat screen views. I recommend visiting early morning. We were there by 9:30. From the Ferry port first purchase your lift tickets. I believe 2.40 euros one way. Get round trip. After cable, next go to bus station and purchase tickets (round trip). Once at the top hop on (14 euros) and enjoy. You can relax and have a snack and take pictures at the very top.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 11, 2024
- EssexFamilyOfFive34 contributionsGreat way to get up to Capri but carnage on a busy day!A great way to get to Capri and the main square. BUT you need to purchase your tickets in the ticket booth across the road. We had read this previously so knew to do this but it really wasn’t all that clear and you could well be caught up in the queue for the funicular without having a ticket! Coming back down was chaos. Leave yourself enough time if you need to get back for a boat!Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 4, 2024

At only €2 one way per person this is a very efficient way to get up to the town. Ticket desk on the right hand side of the port and the Funicular is right in the middle (see photo). Stops in the Centre of the town. Recommended .

The funicular is positioned near to the shops and cafés/bars that overlook the port.
Visitors need to go o the ticket booth which is positioned to the right hand side as you exit the marina (it is well signed)
The tickets are €2 each way. The funicular runs constantly and so you’re never waiting long for the next one to arrive. There are a number of seating / standing compartments, and some with more space and more suitable for prams etc.
The ride only takes just over 5 minutes and brings you out in the middle of Capri town. The views across the bay are breathtaking.

Inexpensive and reasonably quick way to get from the port to the main piazza in Capri (or vice-versa). Tickets sold right by the entrance, but can be crowded at times. Even when crowded, there are some unique views and it is a relatively smooth ride. A word of caution, there does not seem to be air-conditioning, so it may be a warm ride up and down if the windows aren't open to catch the sea breeze.

The Capri Funicular is the handy way to get to the (almost) highest point on the island but it gets REALLY busy. At the front of the entrance it's wide enough for lots of people to gather & everyone seems to crowd together, but there are just a couple of turnstiles to get through to the actual funicular & this makes the whole thing really uncomfortable & almost dangerous. It felt like there could even be a crush, so we left & walked to the top, which is not too difficult, you just have to push on when you think there is no end in sight, but it's worth it! So we had some refreshments when we got to the top a took a bit of time to look around & decided to descent on the funicular, which was a totally different experience. There were just a few people there at the same time & everything was fine, lots of space to see & take photos. So if you can time it properly it works well.

Trip up was pleasant and efficient. Trip down was a monumental waste of time. The q was not particularly long, people wise, but the organisation was appalling/non existent. Organisers of trips were taking their groups through a "back door" leaving everyone else to wait. Local officials watched on and relaxed in the sun. I'll walk down next time rather than subject my self to such a lack of respect from local officials and tour organisers.

We came into the Marina Grande and instead of wasting time walking up all of the steps to the Main area we used the funicular.
We did need face masks (May 2022) but the trip was quick and easy and we had some good views of the island. At the end of our time we walked back down for a different view / experience.

Do you recommend getting the funicular tickets and chair lift tickets in advance? Are the lines very long in the summer?

When I arrive at the marina and take the funicular up, can take a bus up there to the base for the chair lift up to Mt. Salerno, or do I have to come down again to the marina to get the bus?

When you get onto the wharf (we arrived by high speed boat from Naples), you look for the sign that reads "Bigletti Funiculare" (the ticket booth is near the entrance to the tram.) If in doubt, just ask. "Señor/Señora, dove bigletti di funiculare, per favore?" Or just speak English! LOL!
We went on our own in Capri. Read up about it so you can decide what you want to see if you have limited time. Most people take a boat tour (pricey) to see the Blue Grotto. You can get there by bus too, but it's a long ride through the mountains. The buses are very cheap, but they drive like crazy, yet no one has an accident. We went up the Funiculare to Capri town, and then took a bus to Ana Capri (walked around the lovely town, checked out the boutiques and churches), also went to Marina Piccola, rented a pricey boat (just us) to see the Faraglioni (the three tall rocks in the sea) and the White Grotto. Where you land from the ferry/jets is called the Grand Marina. Makes for a lovely day.
From Sorrento, you might have to check the ferry schedules online. I am sure they go to Capri. I didn't go to Sorrento this time.
