Advertised as one of the biggest firefly parks on the world it was really disappointing. One hour sitting in a crowded boat for seeing 5min around 20 fireflies. The blue tears is a little bit better but overall spend too much time for driving here from Kuala Lumpur and waiting.

Firefly park is just an astonishing and unbelievable place! A "must see" in Kuala Lumpur. Though there may be some troubles getting from KL to this place, so I'll describe my way to the park.
You should arrive to the park at 8 p.m. or later (till 10 p.m.), when it is already dark.
There are two ways of getting to the park: by bus or by taxi. Bus costs only 2 USD, but it will take you 2,5 hours of absolutely uncomfortable trip with lots of people and no air-conditioning. Also on the way back you'll have to find taxi (no buses after 7 p.m. from firefly park!) or stay in a local 2-star hotel with bad reviews on Tripadvisor. And a taxi back to town would cost you not less, than 150-200 ringgits (RM, about 55 USD), or you would not be able to find taxi at all! This place is unpopulated, only a firefly park in here.
The best way is to find a taxi in Kuala Lumpur, that will drive you to the park, wait you there, and get back to KL. Go to the street far from 5-star hotels and KLCC to find a taxi with good price. Stop red or green official taxi (or you can find them near supermarkets or office centers), tell the driver you need to go to Firefly Park (kelip-kelip) to Kuala Selangor, and then come back. How much would it cost? He can tell you 300-500 RM. Lower the price to 250 RM - it is an absolutely normal price (may be even lower, some people agreed on 200 or 220 RM). If it is not ok for the driver - find the next car. It will take you about 15-20 minutes to find a taxi. After you come to an agreement, ask him, what is the very latest hour, when you should drive from Kuala Selangor. We adreed on 10 p.m. The way from KL to Selangor takes about 1-1,5 hours (depending on traffic), there are pay roads there, but taxi pays tolls itself.
In the park a boat can carry 4 persons, and the whole boat costs 50 RM (16 USD). If you're a couple, you can be only two in a boat, and pay 50 RM. Or you can wait two more persons, and have a deal with them to share 50 RM payment. You'll get 4 bottles of water for free. Don't drink and drop bottles to the river, be good to the environment!
The boat trip takes 20 min., you boat near trees and bushes with fireflies, stop near them. Don't take photos with flashlight! It is absolutely foolishly! You need a good camera with high ISO (6400 e.g.), and good optics (1,4F). But the photo would not show the beauty and romantics of this place! Have a good journey!
And don't take fireflies in your hands, and take it with you! There is an official penalty of 330 USD!
P.S. There is another firefly park near this place, so don't mess up the descriptions on Tripadvisor. See photos of users to compare.

A 45 minutes drive from KL using the highway. Better get there early before the tourist crowd arrive, around 7pm will be good. Take note that there is 2 lines that you need to be in, one line to buy the tickets (opens at 745pm) and the other line to get into the boat. Best to assign one person at each line if you don't want the long wait. The fee is RM50 per boat that can fit up to 4 persons. Plan your visit during the time in the month when the moon is not bright otherwise you won't be able to see the fireflies in their glory.

Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park is the place where I take visiting friends and family for seeing fireflies. The park has one of the largest colonies of fireflies in the world and is sponsored by Tenaga Nasional. The park has strived towards conserving the area around it over the years, but there are still concerns around encroaching development. So visitors and locals alike should make a strong stand in conserving the area.
The best time to see fireflies is when it's not a full moon night because the moonlight makes them look dimmer as they sparkle in the trees. Four people can fit into one boat and the charge is on a per boat basis.
I highly recommend starting a Kuala Selangor trip first by going to the famous historical hill - Bukit Melawati around 5-6pm in the evening to see the wild silvered leaf monkeys. They're an endangered species of herbivorous monkeys that are much more docile than the usual common macaques. It is a heartening sight to see these endangered silvered leaf monkeys and their golden brown babies roaming around the top of the hill of Bukit Melawati as the sun sets. I really hope the monkeys continue to thrive in that area. They are docile and unassuming, visitors should treat them kindly and not scare them.
Thereafter you can grab dinner at a seafood restaurant that are aplenty in Kuala Selangor before heading to Kampung Kuantan to see the fireflies. Everything is within a 15 minute or so radius by car in Kuala Selangor. I personally think the silver leaf monkeys and the fireflies are one of the few remaining vestiges of true Malaysian nature and wildlife in the now increasingly urbanized country overtaken by palm oil plantations and development.

Don't do it...
*This was the most irritating gimmick, I've ever paid for.
*This was the most irritating thing, I've ever sat still for.
For the price they're charging... I felt ripped off; and I resented the operators for that.
I'd rather watch the phenomenon on National Geographic, on a 3D widescreen. It's more cost effective (and a greater thrill) to catch a cheap return flight to Penang, to undertake Para-sailing as a day trip... and I know first hand, because I did it.
The most irritating aspects of this experience;
4. The mosquitoes
3. The restaurant was FOUL!!!
2. The price was THEFT!!!
...and... are you ready for it!!!
1. The butt cracks that try to take flash photography of the shiny bugs - in the dark... "IDIOTS"
You experience temporary blindness from the flash going off in the dark; and none of their captures will show 'anything' of the event; as the bugs are illuminated... the flash cancels out the iridescent, radiant glow.
The male guide says "No photos"... and all of the women start discharging their flash.
In the end, all you get is a blurry, over exposed image of cross eyed fools, wearing life vests, staring into space - smiling blankly!
**TIP: Take a big can of 'FLY SPRAY' and when the camera flashes start going off... start exterminating the pests...don't bother with this carnival, you're being fleeced to the eye balls
I HATED this so much that I wanted my money back.

The very first thing to do before planning a trip to "Kuala Selangor" is to get a knowledgeable and dedicated tour operator.
We were lucky enough to meet Patrick (012-3339039) who made this trip a memorable one.
Pat picked us up from K.L hotel in his spacious and comfortable 6 seater and we headed for K.Selangor.
The first stop was at Bukit Melawati, we got to see an interesting Fort dating back to the 17th century, a still functioning lighthouse and lots of monkeys !
Vendors sell nuts and fruits which you can feed the silver leaf monkeys with.
The next stop was to watch "Eagles Feeding". This was really an awesome experience, just imagine seeing 20 - 30 majestic eagles at close range - Not to be missed.
Don´t forget your cameras, I forgot mine !
It was getting dark and it was time for dinner so we ended up in a Seafood Restaurant.
The fresh seafood was great.
After dinner we were driven to a jetty where the boats were waiting. The boat ride took only about 25 min, but what we experienced was something really out of this world - Hundreds of twinkling little lights in the darkness of the night. Just spectular !
It was such a wonderful trip to K. Selangor, we experienced and learnt so much and this
would´nt have been possible without Pat.
We were so satisfied with Pat that we hired him for our trip to Batu Caves and also to send us to the airport (KLIA)
If you should need a reliable guide/driver you can contact Pat on his mobile 012-33 39 039.

it's around 1.5h away drive from KL, I were there last Sunday and it was crowded. Probably because of weekend and holiday on next day.Fireflies tour usually start around 730pm to 1030pm. And I been waiting for 1 hour to on board. four person a boat. A boat cost RM53.
Everyone on board get a life jacket. A person will take you a row boat to get up pretty close with natural fire emitters. It was confined to only few trees.
Magical mesmerised by the lightning in nature . I do enjoyed my time on the small river. See numbers of fireflies in almost every berembang tree (It actually not much now). We even pulled close to a tree to just sit there for a while to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere. You could see the fireflies clearly. However, I can imagine that the light is perhaps even better visible if there some distance from the place we on board. Tour was about 20mins.
Due to global warming issue, it has resulted in a marked reduction of firefly
population. So if you haven't see the magical lightning nature, go now before too late ...
In order not to disturb the fireflies you are not allowed to take any pictures, or make any noise. Unfortunately, I met some stupid fella took pictures with continuously flashes yet laughing out loud which I can heard from another board. That not nice.
commonly called fireflies or lightning bugs for their conspicuous use of bioluminescence during twilight to attract mates or prey. So please, think twice before you do, or study before you go. Be a responsible man,
respect their life, we all know that fireflies soon to be genocide.
P/S:
Switch off your phone, no photograph / video recorded allow. Please wear long pant, long sleeve instead of use mosquito repellent. Enjoy the moment with your eyes and heart.
At least that what we can do for the lightning bugs.
Last but not least, I hope they improve conservation job as well.

It is the most amazing place with quite surrounding with the breeze air and amazing firefly. Feel likes be part of the nature.
Just 7 kilometers from the main road and easy to find with signboard and the entrance just beside the Mosque.
Fee RM53 (GST included) per boat (max 4 person).
Tips & Tricks:
1) when you in the BOAT try ask the boatman to just stop at one place for the 20 minutes time because, if not, you just looking around without enjoying the view. I just got 3 minute times in a perfect place before the boat start to row again. Actually they all the same an they only paddle in circle, so better just stay in one spot for 20 minutes (max time for the package). I am speechless when the firefly fly and land into my hand BUT failed to capture that moment because too dark and shaking.
2) why you need to make sure that the boatman just stay in one spot? because if you want to capture that moment using your camera (i am using GoPro) you need long exposure without movement which is not easy if you in a small boat. I suggest you guys get a camera stabilizer.
3) BUT UNFORTUNATELY you meet some other tourist who are super NOOB (same level with stupid) which have not make any revision using the FLASH to capture the image. YOUR FLASHLIGHT DISTURB THE NATURE AND OTHER PHOTOGRAPHER. (it is a clear stupidity to capture the small beautiful light with your BIG FLASHLIGHT turn on!)
4) Please come during raining season (not the heavy rain) because the firefly become more active after rain (according to the villagers). Lucky for me it was rain during our visit (in dry season).
5) Visit time 7.30pm to 10.30pm,
6) Food to eat before Firefly, KingKong Curry Puff, Cendol Bakar, Prawn Noodles, Satay Hut. After Firefly, Seafood at Aroma Ikan Bakar.
That all.

If you go see the fireflies, make it a package, because the fireflies alone are not worth the 1.5h drive each way.
I tried to book this trip through local tour companies. I discovered that not only they were not cheap, but they also want a minimum of 2 pax (and I was by myself). Reading other reviews here on TA I found the number of Steven, a local cab driver so I gave him a call. It turns out that Steven was a great guy, very friendly, with a nice cab, and you can book him by the FF trip or anywhere else (by the hour) for a very reasonable price.
Steven took me for a 6.5 hour trip in the country, stopped first at the place where you can feed silver leaf monkeys (who climb and jump on you if you have food, but are not aggressive, very good picture ops), this first stop was great. Then we went to the fireflies place and got a ticket for both FF and eagle feeding. We did the eagle tour first, they drop food in the water and lots of eagles come to get it. After this Steven picked a nice seafood place nearby and I asked him to order whatever was good. This was a great dinner, the sunset on the river gave me a few more nice pictures. After dark we went back to the FF place to board the boat and go where the bugs are. This part was not the highlight of my trip, as I expected. The trip was fairly short: 10 min up the river, 10 min to return, and 10-15 minutes in between to see the fireflies, which were definitely NOT a thousand count. I don't know if the season was not best, if they are dying or if other reviewers can't count, but this was much less than I expected (yet you see some fireflies - very nice if you've never seen any, but ok otherwise). On the way back there was a night market, we stopped to check it out and buy dessert (lychee ice, some malaysian pancake and colorful cake). I loved that part as it is very typical of the country. After a long ride back and more interesting conversation Steven dropped me at my hotel. All in all it was a great trip, but I'm glad it was not just for the fireflies.
2 days later Steven picked me up again along with 2 friends and we visited Little India, had dinner there - which was great (again Steven ordered the good things) - then we went to Batu caves (illuminated at night and not too hot - very nice), then we did another quick stop at a market to buy local fruits and for the pleasure to walk around, then Steven dropped us at the Hyatt where we had a drink a the 38th floor looking at the Petronas towers.
So we had a great time, thanks to Steven - hence my rating
If you visit KL and want a personalized and private visit/tour anywhere call Steven - his number (mobile) is 019-2236944. Steven made my day. He is not a tour operator but he should be!

This excursion sounds delightful in the “Sightseeing from Kuala Lumpur” pamphlet. In the quiet hamlet of Kampong Kuantan is one of the largest firefly colonies in the world. Described as an amazing phenomenon, the excursion includes a local seafood dinner.
What you do not know and what is not explained is that this excursion involves a four hour bus ride and a river trip not to mention a Chinese dinner.
Our driver explained to us on route that fireflies would not be seen if the weather was wet or windy and that he was concerned that this day’s weather might contain both elements. After visiting a typical Malay home and the Kota Melawati where we saw and fed silvered-leaf monkeys, we eventually arrived at our destination. We were to eat our meal before seeing the fireflies which would take place once night had fallen.
The restaurant, if that was what it could be called was a run-down shed beside the river with primitive facilities. My first thought was that this restaurant would probably be closed down on health grounds if it was in Europe but is probably quite acceptable in Malaysia. The food was, unfortunately for us, Chinese butter prawns, small whole crabs of some sort, rice, vegetables and what I believe was a sweet and sour dish of battered fish pieces mixed with something unidentifiable. When I said it was “unfortunately” Chinese, I said this because I never eat Chinese food having had a bad experience in Hong Kong. Chinese food in Europe is nothing like Chinese food in Asia. The crab was very spicy and impossible to get at the meat, the prawns were deep fried whole without being peeled and covered in some crumbs which made it impossible to remove the heads and outer covering. To a westerner like myself this meal was disgusting and inedible, I ate some rice and some vegetables and as I do not drink tea, neither did I touch the Chinese tea provided.
We were then taken to the river side where a boat was to take us to the fireflies. It was now pitch black on the river and the likelihood of being eaten alive by mosquitos was very much in evidence. We were able to purchase some sachets of insect repellent if we wished before going on the river. However when I realised we would be sitting in an open boat wearing floatation jackets in the complete dark, I decided that this was not a good idea as I always react very badly to mosquito bites. Accordingly, I decided not to accept the opportunity to sail down the river. As it turned out, it was a good decision as within ten minutes the skies opened and the rain hammered down!!
I would advise Asian Trails to explain this excursion more carefully to their “western” clients in future as the expectations of westerners is somewhat different from the standards of the Asian tour operators. I would not recommend this tour unless it is your intention to experience the ways of this region and you are prepared to accept what is provided.
Could you please tell me what is the best way to get to the park from the hotel Sunway Clio if taking a bus? I know the easiest would be to catch it from KL but maybe someone has a better idea how to get from the hotel to Kuala Selangor. Thank you!

I would like to have a day trip to Kuala Selangor from Kuala Lumpur. Are there any other attractions in the area other than the firefly park? Also, is it easy and safe to return to KL from the firefly park by public transport if I leave after 9:00pm?
