About
A little gem in The Catlins, artist Blair Somerville's intricately crafted automata are wonderfully irreverent. The bamboozling collection in the house bus ($ free) is a teaser for the brilliantly eccentric Winding Thoughts Theatre ($8). Push buttons, wind handles, all is about movement here (Entry 13+ yrs). For coffee and bakeries, say hi to Carol in the Little Rocket and cuddle Ginny the Gypsy dog. Open in summer (end Oct – end April). Wednesdays closed.

This gallery is based on objects found by the owner and made into various gadgets one can turn or push. Unfortunately for those travelling with children they are not allowed in, but it certainly brought the child out in us!! Its housed in a roadside bus and there is a little coffee stand right next to it.

This broken down old bus filled with machines and exciting noises is a must see in the Catlins.
Its worth paying the fee to get into the gallery as the installations here will take your breath away and make you laugh out loud.

It's hard to describe this place with conventional words as 'gallery' or 'museum'. It is something between a playground for adults (or for kids, but many things are too fragile), a gallery of recylced material art and a refuge of a very creative (and certainly solitary) mind.
There is a free section which is the owner's former live-in truck which is full of knick-knacks, funny newspaper cut-outs, mechanical and electrical exhibits, most of them with a button to push or a lever to turn. In a simple brilliant piece of work, the artist has created water fountains out of shells and big fish eating small fish.
If you've caught fire on this, you can go on to the paid section which was actually smaller than we had expected, but absolutely fabulous. Our favorite was the piano room!! There is not a high density of worthwile museums in NZ, but this is definitely worth a stop, or even a trip from Dunedin.
To see everything, it probably takes 1-2 hours. There is also a little coffee stand outside.

There are loads of stunning natural things to see in the Catlins - this is quirky man made delight. It's a cross between art gallery, curiosity shop, ultimate recycling tutorial and mad scientist's den. Look carefully, there many delights easily overlooked. I bought something, so I got in the $5 garden for nothing - I''m glad I did go in. I loved the octopus(?), the gum boot game and the organ ( like you've NEVER heard before) and the whale in the car park. I can't wait to see what the take-away coffee machine is going to look like - I may even make a trip back just to see it...

Whether you’re young or older, you will have fun at The Lost Gypsy Gallery - the fist entrance is free and you could spend a long time here - pay $8 per adult (adult only area) for further entertainment and interaction which was great fun - this place is easy to find but check when it’s opening times are as we’ve been trying to go to this place for ages - the owners are wonderful and clever - inspiring imagination - there a small eating and coffee area but as we’d already eaten we missed out on sampling what they had on offer, maybe next time….. we would highly recommend The Lost Gypsy.

From the curious to the frankly weird, these creations make one wonder at the creative thoughts behind them! Coffee from Carol's caravan is excellent along with her home baked treats. A must visit on any Catlins tour.
