Futamigaura is a well-known landmark situated in the northern part of Itoshima city, inside Genkai Quasi-National Park.
While Futamigaura in Ise, Mie Prefecture is referred to as “the Sunrise Futamiura,” the stunning sight of the sun setting over the Genkai Sea led to its nickname as “the Sunset Futamigaura.”
Beyond the white torii gate lies “Meotoiwa” (Couples Rock), a double-peaked islet that looks as if it stands united like a husband and wife. Situated about 150 meters from the shore, the two sections of the islet are connected by a shimenawa rope. The islet serves as a sacred location for the Sakurai Shrine, established by Tadayuki Kuroda, the second ruler of the Fukuoka domain, and honored by many generations of the Kuroda family, which is why it is also known as Sakurai-Futamigaura.
This location draws many tourists due to the presence of several trendy cafes and restaurants in the vicinity.
During the summer solstice, watching the sun set directly over Couples Rock is a remarkable experience. The time between sunset and sunrise, known as blue hour, when the sky becomes a rich deep blue, is also magical. Photographers and various individuals gather at this beautiful location.
Futamigaura features on the “Top 100 Beaches of Japan” and “Top 100 Sunsets of Japan” lists, making it a highlight on any trip to Fukuoka Prefecture.

I went to this place by walking 39 min from Sakurai Shrine.
I arrived this area at around 17:20 just almost sunset and the sunset is amazing like in a dream.
Its one of the most beautiful place that I have ever visited in Japan. I went there weekday so less people. They have frequent bus to hakata city centre so its convenient!

As I was a child, I visited Futamigaura in Ise, near Ise Jingu. And I learned now that there is another Futamigaura in Itoshima. Oh! It is beautiful! Many people come here to take pictures. Nearby there are also fashionable coffee shops and restaurants. Just to walk along the coast, it worth going there. If you use a public transportation, it is convenient to take a bus from JR Kyudai Gakkentoshi station and get off at the last stop. You can spend a whole day in this area.

What a lovely place. The Meoto Iwa Shinto shrine’s white torii on the water, the two rocks tied together symbolizing eternal love is such a romantic spot, no matter how many people are around. And yes, the sunset has the best light for breathtaking photos. There is a paid parking area few steps in the opposite side of the road.

Nice shrine with nice beach area around it where you can relax, SUP, surf and eat. Read up on the background story to fully appreciate it. Able to get there from Fukuoka by public transport by first taking the orange kuko subway in Fukuoka which changes into JR to Chikuzen and get off at Kyudai-Gakkentoshi. From there you can take the bus from platform 3 (630 ¥ - 45 min), Nishinoura line until the final station. The bus drives along the shore, which gives nice views. From the end station it is a 20 minute walk along the road next to coast line. Its quite a nice beach area with restaurants where you can eat and drink. You can also rent SUP and surf boards for 1000 ¥ per hour. Last bus back on weekdays is around 1900. Enjoy!

This is a great place to visit and is popular with locals. There are several interesting restaurants where you can dine and enjoy the view of the bay. However, the beach adjacent to the attraction is filthy and strewn with trash and not worth a visit.
I have posted a short video of the trash on the beach on youtube: http://youtu.be/fDILRg4XYKo

When people talk about Itoshima, the first thing that will come to their mind is Futamigaura. It's a very popular spot for water sport, especially during the summer months. Along the coastline, you will find several restaurants and cafes. Even if you are not into sports or enjoying some food while watching the ocean (if this is even possible), the drive to Futamigaura by car itself is just awesome. The only thing that's kind of a mood killer is that during summer months it's pretty crowded.

Traveling to this shrine without your own car can be tricky. We took the train from Tenjin to the nearest station to Sakurai Futamigaura, from there took a cab to the shrine itself which cost us about 3000 yen. Traveling back to the train station will also be an issue, unless you don't mind walking to the nearest bus stop and taking the bus to the train station. We had to walk 2km by the sea to the next city to ride a bus. It wasn't bad at all since we knew beforehand what we were getting into, and getting lost sometimes isn't always a bad experience when you're with good company! Another option is booking the taxi again to come back for you after a specific amount of time, we just didn't want to spend a lot for that as we were willing to go around the area, walking. There are several restaurants and rental shops if you walk further. We didn't get to see the sunset but that's the best thing to see here so make time for it!
Read up on the significance of the shrine before heading there to fully appreciate it! :)

The moment we arrived in Fukuoka we arranged a car to take us to Itoshima about 45 minutes away and Sakurai Futamigaura is our first stop. The “couple rock” with the Torii gate is beautiful. The rocks are in the middle of the sea and about 150 meter from the beach. They are linked by a rope that symbolizes a happy marriage. During low tide in May the rope will be replaced with a new one. We went there in the morning.
The place is popular for sun set viewings.

Hi, did you rent a car or had a driver bring you? If so, would you mind sharing the cost and travel time? Thanks!

Hi Dyan C,
I am a Private Tour Guide who provides 1 day customized tours for Nagasaki and Fukuoka destinations. The Itoshima region is approx. 35 minutes from Fukuoka City and has many beautiful and interesting locations and attractions. Of course, they can be reached by using a rental car but a private tour takes the worry, uncertainty and planning out of the equation. Let me know if you have any more questions.

I read online that you could visit these beach during sunrise for a nice view. Could someone confirm this for me? I only see people going during sunset and Im worried that sunrise wont be nice x-x

The view during sunrise is indeed beautiful but you won't be able to see the rising over the ocean. Futamigaura is famous for its sunset view with the sun going down between the Torii gate.

There are no regular bus services. I think the closest bus stop might be at the Kyushu Ito University Campus. To get there from Tenjin, got to the Solaria Stage Bus Stop and take the bus "K"
Another option would be using the subway/train.
Not sure how good your Japanese is, but there is a shuttle bus service from the Kyudaigakkentoshi Station.
But you have to make a reservation via phone (Japanese only).
You could also use a taxi from the Kyudaigakkentoshi Station.
It's a 15km ride and it might cost you some 2500 - 3000yen but it is the easiest way to get there in your case I guess.

Why is it covered? In Hiroshige’s painting all three rocks are covered.
