Amazing experience with elephants, rest of activities (cows, boat) can be skipped. I really want to repeat the trip on elephants, and seeing them having a bath on the river. The unique "bad point" is stuff will claim a lot for tips, or to give...More

Maetaman Elephant Camp and Refuge is just that. It is one of the few places in Thailand and Asia in general that elephants are well fed (mostly sugar cane and bananas), well tended (professional tenders and almost one to one for most of the time),...More

We decided to rent a car and drive out to the Maetaman Elephant Camp from Chiang Mai, instead of taking the rather expensive day tour. This saved us around Bht 2,000 per person and having four of us, it was well worth it. The ox...More

Elephants were locked in chains standing on hard concrete flooring, eating grasses with no water under some metal roof shelters. They will just keep waiting there until someone pay for the elephant ride. Why would anyone still want to support and ride the elephants after...More

LOVED IT ! We fed the elephants, we bathed the elephants, we cuddled the elephants. We rode through the forest on the elephants. The guide was SUPERB - a young, enthusiastic woman who had been working at the camp for 10 years. We were a...More

Elephants! (13 Replies)
I have almost finalized plans for our Jan. 2007 trip but I'm still in a dilemma about planning a "day with the elephants." On our last trip we visited the Maetaman Elephant Camp. For this next trip I was planning to visit the Elephant Conservation Center in Lampang but today they posted on their website that the cost for a 1 day program is now 3500 baht! I think this price is way too high and I'm looking (again) for an alternative. Saw the website for the Elephant Nature Park. The cost for...More

We paid 3000bht for a private driver to take three of us in his van to the Elephant Conservation Centre and Lampang town and surrounds including the special temple etc. Not sure what country you are from but that only comes to not much more than $100 Australian. I would say that was a bargain and we had a fabulous day. If you are all interested I can give you the details of the driver or you could arrange your own. Good luck!

Maetaman Elephant Camp (2 Replies)
Hi Everyone, I am headed to Chiang Mai in February and wanted to know if anyone has any information on the Maetaman Elephant Camp. I have seen that this is where elephants do paintings and would like to check that out in person. I found their website, but it does not work properly (many broken images, etc.). A few questions I have: 1.) Is this a legitimate camp with no abuse? 2.) Are there any organized tours from Chiang Mai which visit this camp? Would I be able to book it from any...More

I have been to the Maetaman Elephant Camp, the Mae Sa Camp and the Maetang Elephant camp. The Maetamon Camp and the Maetang Camp are right next to each other outside of Maetang. I found the Maetang Camp to be the cleanest and most organized. They served a decent buffet lunch. This is a fully licensed and insured camp and the husband of one of the owners is an American. Abuse? I don't think so but you have to know that in all the elephant camps some of the elephants are owned by their...More
