what a fabulous day!
Max our elephant guide was so great, our group size was about 16 people but you still managed to get photos of just yourself with the elephants - you do get a lot of time with them - plus there is a photographer who takes a lot of photos which you get to view & buy at the end! It’s so worth it and it looked like they generally care and respect the elephants. You get to do so much a full day is the best way to spend with the elephants, feeding them giving them a mud bath getting food for them and rinsing them. Could not fault this place at all. Making your own noodle soup is great - add your own spices and how much filling you like and eat as much as you like.
You also get to smell and hold some elephant poop 💩 🤘🏽🐘🍌 10/10 what a great day!

Thank you so much for you kind review. We're so happy that you enjoyed your experience with us here at Maerim Elephant Sanctuary. The small fee for the optional professional photography service also goes back into supporting the elephants so it's a win win. All the best for the future.

There are several elephant sanctuaires close to Chiang Mai, but I'm sure this was the best choice. I booked a full day tour and it was completely worth it. It is a very well organized tour, and a lot of fun. Our guide, Dee, gave us an amazing guided experience. From the moment they picked us up at the hotel it was with a big smile and I was touched by an incredible group that we made an instant connection. In the sanctuary there are six elephants which are adorable! They are very well cared for and because they are few I think they pay much more attention to them. There are many refugee dogs in the place which are also very friendly. The team was always attentive to give us the best experience. One thing that became very important to me is that you are followed throughout the tour by a photographer dedicated to taking the best photos and so you can leave your cell phone and social networks and enjoy the 100% experience. During the record it rained and made the experience more unique being in the rain and bathing with the elephants. I loved this experience!

We visited Maerim on the recommendation of our daughter who visited there two years ago. She spent several days researching which elephant reserve to visit with a focus on the ones that rated the highest in their care and commitment to taking care of elephants who have suffered abuse in the past. She raved about her experiences there so for us, we simply followed her recommendation. Two years later and that is two very difficult covid years of closure, we arrived at Maerim and found everything that she said to be absolutely true. The staff were very professional and welcoming and careful to put at both at ease around these magnificent creatures, while at the same time, making sure to guide us how to show our compassion in ways that the elephants would find to be comforting. We had fun, learned a lot and can not recommend Maerim enough as a place to go in Thailand to both experience these amazing rescued elephants as well as a place to learn about the history and current status of elephants in Thailand. In short, this was one of the highlights of our trip to Thailand. Maerim is for you if you similarly want to make sure that you are supporting an organization that really takes care of their elephants.

Max was our host and he was absolutely amazing! He was friendly, charming, funny and very informative. He picked us up in at the hotel for the 1 hour drive to the elephant sanctuary.
The sanctuary itself is small, in comparison to the others ive read on trip advisor, but its the newest and truly an elephant sanctuary. They have rescued 6 elephants (including a a baby, 3 year old) where we fed, mud bath and water bathed with them and had a nice evening noodle soup with the group. There was about 20 of us in total (which apparently is on the smaller side). Their photographer captured all our moments. So impressive as I dont remember seeing him around the whole experience but was able to capture EVERYONE, individually. In the short time, he edits the photos and zip drives them for each group of friends to view after our meal to purchase for a small fee. 100% of the proceeds goes to the sanctuary. There is no gimmick or marketing with them. I absolutely enjoyed my time and highly recommend them!

This was the best day of my life too date!!!! Took me months to decide wether or not to visit any elephant sanctuarys because of the ethics behind how the elephants ended up where they did, and their treatment but I am so happy that I found this place. There are 6 beautiful female elephants here who are so well cared for with the sanctuary modelling tourism around how the elephants would live in the wild (minus the people). I did the full day tour and would highly recommend this, you feed them and can take photos, then change into traditional clothing to go and spend time with them in the jungle, cut down banana trees to collect food for them, make delicious noodle soup for lunch then walk with the elephants before going in a mud bath to play with them followed by a swim with them in the water. The staff are all very knowledgeable and informative and take great care of the elephants. There is an air-conditioned space with showers and there was lots of drinking water available. This place was amazing and does great things for the elephants, couldn't recommend more!!

Please add this to your list of things to do in Thailand. Avoid riding elephants or zoos that treat animals unethically. This experience is way better then anything else. This is THE MOST up close and personal you will ever be with elephants. I felt we were doing what they would do naturally: feeding them, walking with them, letting them roam about, cooling off in the mud and then having a bath to wash it all off. And we got to experience every one of these things with all 6 elephants including a baby. Our guide, Dee, was knowledgeable and fun. He made sure we enjoyed our experience and educated us about the elephants. Every person in our group of 4 said they did not like the experience-THEY LOVED IT!!! The photographer was great and captured so many magical pictures & we were allowed to take our own pics/videos but he got some unbelievable shots as well. I thought everything was so affordable and included lunch & transportation. We never felt rushed and had so much time with all the elephants. You will even have time to enjoy the swimming pool after you shower all the mud off. Please support this sanctuary-you will not regret it.

What a great visit! It was my wife's choice to go to the Maerim Elephant Sanctuary, but we both had the time of our lives. I am so glad we went. The Elephants are awesome! The guides are great and we learned so much from them, especially Sun. And the mission of taking care of these formally abused elephants is truly heart warming. We did the half day visit and we thought it was plenty of time with the elephants. We met them and fed them bananas soon after we got there. Then we went into the mud pit with the elephants. You don't have to go in, but you should. My wife was hesitant but is so glad that she did. After the mud bath we went into the water with the elephants. I can't tell you how much fun that was. We are smiling ear to ear in all the pictures that we have. We took some pictures with our phones and we bought the pictures that they took. They were were some of the best pictures we have ever posted online for our friends and family. Well worth the $30 they charge, but you don't have to buy them. After the elephants left we went to the people pool and had a beer. Then finally, we got to "cook" our own lunch. It was a noodle soup that we could customize to our own tastes. It was very good! This isn't a luxury experience but a very rewarding one. I highly recommend it.

After reading many forums about the best, most ethical elephant sanctuaries in the Chiang Mai area, I reserved the full day experience at the Maerim Elephant Sanctuary. I had personal reservations which were erased by the well planned, fun, interactive, thoughtful and informative day we spent with the staff and elephants. The pace of activities was perfect. Always something going on to engage all the participants, and time to fully enjoy each experience. We fed the elephants fruit, grass, and made our way to a near by banana plantation and each chopped down a tree to feed the elephants the tender core of the tree. We learned that it will re-grow and bear fruit in as little as 9 months! The mud bath and river swim were wonderful experiences and the traditional lunch was delicious. The photographer captured so many we wonderful moments and although I'd been trying, and took many of my own photos, I couldn't resist the photo package that was on offer for sale. It was fun to see the slideshows of each groups day after we had changed back into our clothes following a swim at their beautiful pool. The swim in the pool was a wonderful addition to this incredible experience. I have only praise for this excellent day with the gentle giants.

There's quite a number of fake sanctuaries, but this one didn't seem like one of them. There was a variety of activities with the elephants and none of them seemed dangerous or harmful to the elephants. The staff treated them with respect and I felt comfortable around this big, smart animals. Those poor animals went through the hell before being saved and put in this sanctuary. The hostel in the city recommended me ''Maerim Elephant Sanctuary''. The coolest part was getting in the muddy pool with elephants. People that came in the group also prepared the lunch together at the end. For Instagram fans, you can pay a service of the photographer who follows the tour and take spontaneous photos - I got much good content. Enjoy!
