Not only this is an interesting building from an architectural point of view, but the vistas from up the tower are incredible! Worth a visit!

Apart from the fantastic view from the top of the tower this area is worth a visit if you have an interest in the history of the Etruscan people that first inhabited this area a couple of thousand years ago. There is a small museum with an interesting video providing an insight into the long history of the area from pre-roman times. This site was the only Etruscan city built on the coast and the archaeological excavations and burial sites are quite extensive. The whole area is picturesque and a whole day could quite easily be spent here.

Tremendous views from the tower. A pleasant short trip from San Vincenzo along a beautiful bay. Parking by the hour but cheap enough. Worth the detour if on the way to Piombino.

Very nice place to go with an amazing view. The castello is located in a small village with very nice handcraft shops. It really worth for a morning or afternoon.

Located in the small village (really super small) of Populonia this castle was not open when we visited but it is very beautiful to walk around there and enjoy the stunning sights of the Mediterranean sea and picturesque character of Populonia.

One of the most beautiful and breathtaking places that I have ever seen. There are some walks through the mountains that bring you to nice hidden beaches

If you are a bit dodgy on your feet, then this castle is not for you. Park in the public car park at the bottom and walk up to this lovely little enclosed village where there are souvenir shops and cafes. Pay a small entrance fee and you can visit the castle and climb a lot of stairs to the very top of the tower where you have fantastic views over the Mediterranean Sea towards the island of Elba (where Napoleon was exiled) and the Tuscany countryside. There is also a lovely little church to look round and then relax with a glass of wine or any other drink at one of the cafes.

The Castello di Populonia was an nice little side trip. Beautiful little city contained within its walls. The only bad part was that the fortification portion that allows you access to the top of the tower was closed the day I was there. The surrounding hill top offers a nice view of the sea.

While being in Tuscany we went to visiting the castle & the tower. For a small fee you can enter this great sightseeing & enjoying the great view from the tower (or castle in general). For a little extra fee you'll get the combi-ticket allowing you into the small museum 2 minutes away from the castle/tower.
And after that you can stroll around the small village & enjoy a wine or some food in the little cute restaurant.
You need to get a ticket for the parking and pay at the parking cashier before you leave.

We stopped at the Castello di Populonia while spending the day driving the Tuscany Coast, the Castle itself is not that big but the sceneries are just absolutely gorgeous. The Castle has the towers patios and village around it is worth to spend some time in the area to enjoy the scenery and to relax a while. If you are in the area which is about 50 miles south of Livorno and 60 from Pisa stop at this place.
