As non-hikers we took a chance to try something beyond eating our way through the region and were well rewarded for our efforts. Route 3 provided just enough moments of exertion up and down rocky paths paired with pleasant strolls along country lanes. This was a beautiful trail winding it's way through the mountains and valleys one generally only passes quickly in the car. The timing seemed perfect as there were abundant wildflowers in the verdant natural surrounding but the pathways were dry and stable. A series of signs kept us easily on track allowing us to wander without the fear of becoming lost. If you are not quite ready to don spandex, strap on a helmet and pedal your way through the region this park will allow you to immerse yourself in nature with two feet firmly planted on the ground and no cars whizzing by.

In a nice and cool June day, so perfect for hiking, we arrived at the Park visitor center "Il Fontanazzo", well signposted if you drive from Guiglia.
Recommended by the staff, we choose, among all possible trails, the no. 3 one, a circular path that allows you before to bypass the "Sassi" (rocks) overlooking them, then walking into the valley below, along a trail that virtually at every step changes the outlook on the rocks themselves.
The route is varied, as it winds both along the sides of wooded hills, and in the bottom of moist and shady valleys, or on open and sunny country lanes. If the weather is nice or even just decent, your memory will be impressive.
At the Visitor Center, we decided to invest € 6 to buy a detailed trails' map (anyway. at least the no. 3 path is well signposted).
The route takes 3 hours, which become easily 5 or more if you stop, and/or if you consume your packed lunch (more or less half way, at the old "Riva" mill, there is a nice picnic area). Then provide to spend most of a day is appropriate.
If you prefer to dine at the restaurant, along this ring, a little beyond the picnic area, there is the "S. Apollonia" restaurant, with typical Emilia cuisine.
Instead we have chosen to not make (just after the loop start) the ascent to the "Sasso" (rock) along an equipped path (3 euros). And I'm happy with this choice, because I suffer from fear of heights and into the reviews in Italian I read that this can be a problem.
Another plus: the surrounding area is famous for its cherries production, and in June, the trees are laden. On the way back, buying freshly picked cherries from the farmers' stalls at road side, has completed in style our beautiful day.

In this area it's very difficult to find rocks like these: these hills are made of sandstone, and apart very few place (like this or Varana) it's impossible to see vertical walls. Here you cannot climb, unfortunately...

Spent a fortnight in and around the park, walking as a family and joining groups for albering and bouldering. The place is lovely, prices for staying and eating are modest - excellent. The big stone at Roccamalatina was worth making a diversion for on its own and the inexpensive tickets are good for a couple more attractions as well, including the lovely sweet chestnut museum at Zochetta. Few people seem to have English about here but miming and very basic Italian does the job.

We stayed in an off the path farmhouse many years ago where the nonna cooked and you could see a working dairy farm making ricotta etc. We'd love to find it again. Can't remember the name though ....

Sì le scarpe da ginnastica vanno bene. Non è un percorso troppo impervio: salita moderata e qualche scaletto a pioli, ma affrontabile da quasi tutti.
