We berthed here while on a cruise. There is Mount Maunganui to climb or just admire. On one side of the town is a sheltered beach which the locals take to in their kayaks. On the other are surf beaches. The Main Street boasts great little shops, hotels and brewerys.

We were in the Mt. Maunganui area during June, supposedly winter.....we had some fantastic days that we spent at the beach, blue skies and the most beautiful white sand. The kids loved searching for shells. We didn't swim but there were plenty of others. Lovely surroundings/views of the Mount.

If you can find parking on a nice day, this is an excellent friendly beach. Cafes are close by and the view is great.

Every week I walk up the Mount and then around the base track with my two friends. It is an amazing walk right beside the Mount Mauganui village. I have done this walk almost weekly for the past 20 years, and one of the few places with a hill in a mainly flat area. The view is great looking out... More

Such a magical place, walk on the beach with the kids was so much fun, shells everywhere... they loved it.. a bit of hike and we were on a cliff on the ocean edge and looking back at Mt Maunganui. Highly reccomend.

Anywhere else in the world you would need to pay to walk on a beach of this quality. Or you would never get to put a foot on it as it would be owned by some millionaire. Or, worse, it would be packed solid to the point that the only sane response would be to run screaming to anywhere else.... More

So very glad we found this stunning part of NZ... The beach is just gorgeous that stretches for miles where you can take a leisurely stroll or simply relax at one of the waterfront cafes . Simply paradise !

Often you'll see lots of sea bird varieties native to NZ, the Oyster Catchers, Red Billed Gulls, Black Backed Gulls and The Dotterell. People run along the flat sea shore when the tide is low, and the tides are diurnal (2 low tides/2 high tides per 24 hours). Sometimes, there are king tides which are highly dangerous to those people... More
