- Rob RTredegar, United Kingdom2,704 contributionsA very peaceful and tranquil locationStopped here on our way to Mostar travelling from Cavtat. The monastery is worth a visit, but to be honest it’s the setting and location that really makes this a worthwhile stop. It was also our lunch stop and it was a beautiful location to eat, with the sound of water cascading and the cool temperature beside the water. Not a must do but this was certainly a very relaxing location and I enjoyed my time there.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 15, 2024
- Lidia CZapopan, Mexico1,135 contributionsJust for some nice photos on the go.We read that it is not worth too much effort to enter so we just looked and photographed from around. The landscape is very beautiful and flowery, with a river, bridge and waterfalls, but so many roofs, restaurants and umbrellas block the view quite a bit. Be careful, we arrived around noon and it seems that there were already many people having lunch so the driver - still carrying elderly people and those with walking limitations - was not allowed to approach and they made him park upstairs, next to the road. With a lot of heat, we had about 600 meters. walking (first down, then up!). There are many stalls along that stretch. Everything can be visited in about 30 to 40 minutes.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 17, 2024
- CisternistaVeniano, Italy1,613 contributionsNot to be missedA magical place. The dervish monastery is striking not so much for the building itself, very simple, but for the landscape context. Surrounded by greenery, right next to small waterfalls. To get there take the city bus nr 10 to Mostar with destination "Blagaj", arrive at the terminus. From there to the monastery there are a few hundred meters walk. Ticket price 2.10 KM equal to just over one Euro. The bus time for the return is marked on the pole of the stop in the village, in front of a bar.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten July 6, 2024
- davidf6310Siena, Italy923 contributionsNot to be missedThe place is undoubtedly suggestive. The Dervish monastery is definitely worth visiting, despite being smaller than you might imagine. The surrounding environment is fascinating, being under a rock face from where the river Buna begins, whose waters emerge from a karst spring. The cave where the river begins can be visited with a small dinghy.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 21, 2024
- reiya19992,580 contributionsBest viewed from the other side of the monastery. It is said to be a sanctuary of Muslim culture. The monastery, built in the early 1500s during the Ottoman Empire, is still considered a sanctuary for Islamic culture. Within the cave on the right is the headwaters of the Beech River, which is also accessible by boat. It is one of the largest water sources in Europe. The mainstream Neretva River, into which this Beech River flows, is known as the coldest water in the world. The area is closed to swimming, but canoes and boats are available for hire. The best part of Bragaj is the view from the other side of the monastery. I visited on tour. We visited on weekday mornings and it was quite crowded with tourists. For a fee, you can enter the monastery.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten July 25, 2024
- colbuck1,006 contributionsThe monastery does not deserve but the scenery is beautifulThe monastery itself is not particularly interesting and there are no explanations of the individual rooms. Admission costs 5 marks and you have to enter barefoot and with your head covered as in mosques: if you are not equipped, you can use sarongs and scarves made available free of charge by the guardian. But what it absolutely deserves is the surrounding landscape: the contrast between the rock face and the color of the river is really remarkable.Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 27, 2024
- WaddlerYork, United Kingdom12,540 contributionsEnjoyable day tripThere is a bus from Mostar - you can also take a taxi, though book the return taxi (we used Herc taxi and booked via WhatsApp once we knew the time we wanted to go - cost 17 marks (8.5 euros) each way. Once here, unless you turned up very early there's a hill to walk down. Even our taxi wasn't permitted to go down it. You walk through a string of tourist stalls, but they've done a good job of keeping the actual site itself relatively free of this stuff. I would recommend entering the building, its decorated in a pretty manner and has nice views out of the cave, river and rock wall. They provide coverings for heads (women only) and legs if you don't have them covered. The other worthwhile trip is the short boat trip into the cave. What makes this is the narrative about the Buna river, which has its source in this cave. The depth and quantity of the water here is astounding, as are the tales of the divers exploring the cave system. Worth also staying for lunch. Its a beautiful spot.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 4, 2024

Not a lot to see inside, definitely not worth 5 euros, save your money and go across the bridge to the opposite side. stunning views of the monastery and waterfall.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 18, 2024

Legs and head need to be covered and these are available for use. The house shows the daily life of the local people. The area is beautiful and worth a walk across the bridge for another view of the hilly area, and clear water. I wish I had a time for a boat ride and suggest planning for at least 3 hours here. A few plaes to enjoy local food and beverage near the water.Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 29, 2024

Inside there is a small museum, in which some household objects remain. Before going inside, you need to take off your shoes, entrance 5€. The house is located by a beautiful river, nearby there is a cafe and a souvenir shop.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten October 21, 2024

We visited the historic Sufi monastery of Blagaj Tekija by driving ourselves from Mostar. We parked in a large paid parking lot above the monastery and walked about 600m from there.
The entrance fee is €5 and it is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The monastery is located on the river bank in front of a steep rock face and looks beautiful and worth seeing. When we were there one morning towards the end of September, the number of visitors was limited, so we were able to look at everything quite relaxed.

This trip proved to be a great recommendation from our hotel manager at Kriva Cuprija. Blagaj monastery/ Dervish House is about a 20 mins drive out of Mostar. It cost 6 marks for the parking which sits about 5 mins from the entrance and 20 marks to enter the Dervish House and Monastery.
My husband and I had to cover our legs with a long skirt, which the monastery provided, and I also had to wear a headscarf. The monastery/ house had 3 floors. Each of the rooms had woven rugs laid on the floors. Several of the rooms overlooked part of the river. The house also had library and most impressively a wash area with the brightest colored stars in its ceiling. There was minimal description about the monastery.
Out along the river, there were numerous picturesque restaurants. Across from the Dervish monastery/house there is access to a boat. For 4 marks each, we were taken into the cave where the river emerges from the depths. I would recommend this short boat ride/visit into the cave. Our boat guide explained that a group of French divers in 2004 wanted to learn about the Spring. They dove down and then went 700 meters along a cave tunnel. They found that the spring water joins the village of Buna. Strangely in hotter months the river in the village dries up but the spring in Blagaj still flows. We also learned that in November the spring rises so high in the cave that it is impossible to enter it. The green moss is a testament to the height of the river.
Close to our parking area, we drove up a about 500M to begin a climb up to Blagaj fortress ruins. The view was worth the 20 mins climb.

The Blagaj Tekija is a monastery built in 1520 by the Dervish, a branch of Sufi Islam. The monastery built at the base of a huge cliff, where Buna river seeps out from a cave, is considered a place of spiritual retreat. The place is truly magical. It's very hard to describe It's beauty. In my opinion It's the best tourist place in Bosnia and Herzegovina . The cliff, water gushing out from a cave and the little monastery built in the mountain is something unique. Visited it as part of a guided tour. It's a must visit place.

We were on the way to Montenegro and stopped by. They ask for a fee for parking, do not bring your empty car inside, there are available places outside. The environment is nice, we decided to go inside the waterside lodge. It costs 5 euros per person, but we did not go in because we were crowded, we walked around, would I go again, or not?

It is the tiny place of prayer for Muslims, transformed into a museum open to visitors upon payment of 3 euros per person. As the access fee is very low, it is worth visiting, but there are no great things inside. Just a small library and some prayer rooms.

Really impressive site, worthy of a day trip from Mostar. The valley is lovely, with great views and the scenic Dervish house topping it off.
The house itself is interesting and worth visiting for the price (about €5) - a historic curiosity. Legs need to be covered as do ladies’ heads, but they provide shawls if you don’t have anything with you.
Most people appear to come on tours however we came via the Mostar public bus - the journey was only about 15-20 minutes and cost just 2BAM. Buses don’t show on Google maps, but can be found online and are fairly regular (every hour or two). Worth noting the times are when they leave the terminus, so you have to do a bit of estimating as to when the bus will get to your stop!

Not far from Mostar, Blagaj Dervish House is a serene, peaceful place although I went slightly out of season and during the pandemic so there were only a few tourists. 5 Bosnian Marks entrance fee, head scarves available for women to wear entering the monastery. Monks don't live here anymore but they do come once a year I've been told. Views of the cave with the underground spring, the source of the river, are quite nice from the windows. If you're fortunate to go in pomegranate season, there's a man pressing fresh pomegranates from his orchard who will tell you about his time spent in Serbia during the war.

Stopped here to see the Blagaj Tekke that many people told me to see and I was not disappointed. Admission and parking was fairly inexpensive, and I was greeted when I approached the house by a very nice woman who told me all about it. After taking my shoes off, I took a walk around the house to see all of the different rooms. Afterward, you can take a small bridge across the river for a great photo of the entirety of the house.

This city is known for one particular picture spot that is famous on Instagram but we also wanted to explore more. We started off by heading toward the Dervish House. Before you can go into the area you have to pay to enter. The fee is 5 Marks (BAM) a person.
The Dervish House is a monastery, so you have to remove your shoes and women have to have their legs and hair covered. If you do not have the proper attire, they provide long skirts and head scarfs for you to borrow before walking into the house. In this house there are rooms for prayer, a kitchen, washroom, and a room with two tombs.
After exploring the Dervish House we left and crossed a bridge to the other side. While walking, if you look to your left you can see a rushing waterfall. It is not from the mountain but still has a nice fall as the river takes a sudden drop. When you cross the bridge, there are restaurants on the other side. Past them, there are stairs and a path that takes you to the famous Instagram spot where you can see the Dervish House pressed against the mountain and you can see into the cave that is the source of the Buna River. If it was not winter, there would have been a boat that takes you into the cave for a small fee.

Parking? I have read both that there is a pay parking lot as well as if you continue further you can park free on the road. Any advice?
Boat? I am planning a visit the beginning of May (3rd). Is the boat running into the cave or is it too early?
Thank you..

There is a large parking lot about 1km away. I saw cars parked along the road but thought they belonged to the vendors who worked in the kiosks along the road. It's slightly downhill getting in, uphill going back. There are lovely things to look at along the road, and vendors for a pomegranate juice or pastry. Make note of the rock roofs as you walk past. They are very prevalent in this area. You can get brochures in every hotel or the TI in Mostar by the bridge that will give you hours. They are seasonal, as I went in October couldn't tell you about May. Take some small Mark Bill's or change to tip the women who help you with headwear, or for the gift shop. They take Euros but not change.

Where can I watch whirling dervishes whirling in Mostar? Actually doing their thing. Thank you.
Written November 8, 2017
Along the lines of what others have said, the Blagaj Tekija is a Muslim monastery, place of worship, and museum. While it may be a monastery or "dervish lodge," it does not, to my knowledge have whirling dervishes but there are many people there who visit for religious reasons or who are praying.
One other person noted that you need to go to Turkey to see that and as far as I know, that is correct. Even if there are dervishes in Bosnia-Herzegovina, they will not be "Whirling Dervishes," who are members of a specific monastic/dervish order, the Mevlevi, who are now only in Turkey (the only dervish order to survive the republic's secularization officially and intact). They have two lodges, one in Konya and one in Istanbul (near Istiklal Caddesi and the Galata Tower, if you are familiar with that city).

Hola,
Gracias,

Hi,
My family & I will be staying in Dubrovnik in late April for a week. We want to take a day trip to Mostar and Blagaj from Dubrovnik. Is it better to rent a car to do this or is a tour better? If the latter, any recommendations?
Thanks
Written March 12, 2016
If I were you i would take guided tour, probably you are not familiar with the area, do not know language, (even majority of people know at least basic English) and for one day trip they would better organize your trip. Too much hassle going on your own... Parking in Mostar old town is big issue.
Do your research on the net for the agencies it's still enough time to find one. Like somebody before suggested make it two day trip and visit other places in Bosnia, Pocitelj must see, even Sarajevo is only two hours away from Mostar.
Not much to do in Dubrovnik in April. (If it was summer, one week is not enough).
