From the Dervish House we set out on what turned out to be a 50 minute walk to the Blagaj Fort; also known as Stjepan-grad. The last 20 minutes was the final hike from the proper parking area up the mountain. The lead up to the final hike is all up hill but it is paved. The last 20 minutes was not paved so you have to watch your step.
At the entrance there is not attendant or fee that is collected. 2 other women walked up at the same time we did; but they were the only people up there with us for about 15 minutes. Then a group of hikers who are also tour guides showed up. They were very friendly and told us the story of this castle.

great 20 min hike to reach the fortress from the parking lot below. trail is mostly gravel. some sprinkling of poppies and other wildflowers in May. you can then see the view of Mostar valley from the top.
this hike appears to be quite popular among the locals but not so well known among the tourists, who mostly congregate at the bottom (dervish house)

After getting a refreshment at the Buna river visiting this castle is the logical thing to do. A sight of it from the distance evokes something mysterious and awakes the urge to climb and to see it. When you reach it, you will have an amazing view of the surrounding area and you can imagine how Stjepan felt a long time ago when he resided in his castle. A truly amazing experience

The castle sits high above Blagaj. If traveling by car, do not park in Blagaj but rather continue through the town using waze or google maps to climb up through town and park at the head of the trail that leads up to the castle. This will save one at least a half mile or more of uphill hiking.
The trail has a sign saying it was improved through an international cooperation project with Mostar, and is in good shape. It took us about 30 minutes to hike to the top at a leisurely pace. During our entire time, we met only one family from Australia, a single tourist from Slovenia, and a local woman gathering wild sage for sale.
The castle ruins at the top of the mountain are in good shape and offer impressive views of the valley below. A morning visit before the top heat of the day is a good option, followed by a lunch at one of the many restaurants along the headwaters of the Buna river down below in Blagaj. For anyone staying at a hotel in Mostar, this is a good, easy day trip.

Really amazing old town with interesting history behind it. You can drive up to the hill where it is located, and there is a huge parking place but there is 20 min walk up the hill, the hike is easy, even children can go without a problem

Just keep driving towards the fort rather than park in the town proper. There’s a well maintained road and a parking that is free of charge right next to the path to the castle proper. Magnificent views, relatively easy climb. Get sunscreen if you’re going there on a hot day.

I definitely recommend checking this out while in Blagaj to round out your visit. Go to the tekija, drink a coffee on the Buna and explore the fortress. Chances are, you will have the fortress and the view mostly to yourself. Just a heads up - there is a pathway straight up as well as a pathway of switchbacks that is more gradual. Choose the option that makes the most sense for you!

A historic place, nearly re-opened for travelers and visitors. It will be more exciting when they finish their plans(ask domestic people for more info). You can explore the whole castle by foot, and the view is amazing.

Beautiful castle ruins, with superb view over the valley. Free entrance. A new walking path has been made, about 15 mins walk from the castle. If you visit during the summer months, bring an umbrella for shade or go early.
