We and the kids had a great couple of hours here. It was really modern, well laid out and includes some rare examples of AR and VR actually being put to good use rather than simply being a gimmick. Good kids audio guides too.

This museum is one of the rarest and most important collection of fossils in the world from this period - some perfectly conserved examples being from 5 million years before the dinosaurs we know of normally. Very well organized and set in a beautiful scenery as well.

A small but great museum! we visited with friends with children and everyone was happy! The paleontological history of the area is fascinating and the explanations and videos and samples provided give you a precise idea of what and how happened millions of years ago. The explanations are in italian but audioguides in other languages are available and though our guests were french and german motherlanguage they enjoyed it greatly. Also the lady at the counter was very lovely and informative. The quiet village is very lovely and there are walks nearby that show triassic formations. The kids want to come back with full paleontologist's gear! Open on a holiday, thank you very much, you made our day!

We drove our rental car 25 km from the Palace Grand Hotel Varese. Having found this museum's counterpart in Italy(Museo dei fossili del Monte San Giorgi) closed yesterday, we were anxious to see this one in Switzerland.
We parked below in the Meride town lot and walked up ~150 meters to the center. After our 8 Euro each admission, the English speaking attendant provided an English guide and instructed how to operate their 2 films in English. After taking the elevator to the 3rd floor, we walked down, examining the treasure trove of amazing fossils embedded in limestone.
It was fascinating to discover how this mountain was nearer the equator and at sea level 240 million years ago. Also how this area has had a mining industry for bituminous salve 'Saurolo" since the mid 1800's. Great museum for us.

Our family enjoyed immensely our 2-hour visit. Time passed so quickly that I was surprised to discover that we had stayed so long. The World Heritage Site of Monte San Giorgio is represented well by this fine museum, which is organized extremely well. I would also like to thank the museum caretaker, who made a real effort to make sure all six of us enjoyed our visit. While the majority of signs are in Italian (understandably), there are many electronic presentations that can viewed in many other languages. These presentations are professionally excellent and certainly clarify many questions regarding the animals whose fossils we see so well-preserved after so many millions of years. Like the strata of the mountain, the different floors of the museum represent different epochs, with the lowest floor naturally showing the oldest specimens, dating from 400 million years ago. BTW, the village of Meride itself is quite nice and well worth a stroll and a visit to one of the local grottos or osterias for some top-notch local cuisine.

I walked over Monte San Giorgio with friends at least 15 Years ago and, at that time, heard something about the fossils found up there, but there was nothing much to be seen. Evidently not as the pieces are all in this Museum! Arranged on 3 floors, there are fossils to be seen, videos to be watched, and marbles to enjoy. It's a museum that is suitable for all ages.

I visited this Museum in Meride, a lovely small village in the Italian part of Switzerland. The village can be reached by car, but there are just few parking spaces.
the museum is beautiful and very informative. It contains many fossils from the Triassic time (250 million years ago) found on the Monte San Giorgio.

From the fossil museum we walked to the peak of Monte Giorgio - spectacular views but quite a steep hike (we took the anti-clockwise route of the circular geo path, with a detour to the summit, from which we descended to the cable-car station at Serpiano. We had planned to get the cable-car to Brusino, but it doesn't run Mondays or Tuesdays).

It is suitable for both children and adults. They are carried out various activities for children: so the children have fun and adults watch the exhibition.
Illustrations and models explain to the public the long extinct world whose fossils have been excavated.
Fossils of animals and plants constitute the main part of the exhibition, complemented by depictions of the animals as three-dimensional models set in artistic reconstructions of their habitats.
