An estuary paddle board tour with Kevin and Joann is a MUST when in and around Playa Negra. Kevin and Joann are very organized and conscientious about making the experience safe and enjoyable. The paddle boards are excellent and Kevin's pre-take-off orientation perfect. The estuary is incredibly interesting and the tour will leave you with a deeper understanding of the diversity of this incredible area.
Highly recommend you make time for the estuary tour.

This was my first time paddle boarding and Kevin did a great job preparing me. All I had to do was show up, they had everything else. What's so great about this company is that it's locally owned and they live the local life. Kevin and his wife are environmentally conscious and pack the tour with information about the Eco system and animals. He also takes pics of you in action so you really don't have to worry about anything but standing up! Thanks for a great experience!

We had a great time on our SUP trip with Kevin and Joanne. They are a calm, friendly couple who work well together. The estuary is a unique and peaceful place. Not tons of wildlife to see, but fun to explore the mangrove environment. Even though some of us had never paddle boarded before, we had no issues. Paddle boarding does require some physical strength because you sometimes paddle against the current, but overall not too strenuous. Kevin is a good teacher and no one feels rushed. The drive to the estuary was an adventure in and of itself, but Kevin and Joanne guide you the whole way.

This was my first time ever paddle boarding and Kevin made the experience fun and easy. He was very well organized, and provided all the necessary gear. His instruction was clear and easy to follow, and he walked me through every step of how to paddle and kneel, then stand, on the board.
The trip up the estuary was delightful. The water was calm and Kevin shared many interesting stories about the natural history of the mangroves and their fascinating adaptations, as well as pointing out various birds, fish, and other wildlife.
We enjoyed a rest in a shady spot, and turned around at a good time to get back easily. Kevin’s gentle coaching and calm demeanor eased my learning jitters. By the end of the trip I felt confident and eager to go out paddle boarding again. I highly recommend the experience and the

Kevin and Joanne are experienced guides with a wealth of knowledge about the various flora and fauna in the area. I first booked a SUP tour with them for a retreat I hosted back in July of 2019, and returned this month with both of my teenage boys to do jt again. They loved it, both of them said it has been one of their favorite excursions in Costa Rica so far. It’s such a cool experience to paddle up the estuary while the birds are calling all around you, the tide is coming in and all you hear is wind water and wildlife. Peaceful and fun!

While staying at a beachfront hotel in Playa Negra, my husband (a skilled surfer) and I decided to schedule an SUP excursion. We were pleasantly surprised when the guide who came to get us (Kevin) was the same man we had seen for several days riding the waves with his SUP board. Kevin and Joanne took us to a nearby estuary, and although we didn't see a lot of wildlife, it was serene and beautiful. We weren't new to SUPing (I have mainly done flat water SUP) but Kevin gave me great tips to improve my skill and I am now inspired to try SUP wave riding.
Kevin and Joanne are a calm and delightful couple, inspiring examples of great health and Pura Vida for those of us who are no longer 20 years old

We contacted Kevin before we came to Costa Rica and he gave us excellent advice. When we arrived we were able to get straight into the lessons. Accompanied by his lovely partner Joanne, who stayed on the beach and took action photos. I can tell Kevin is a master of his craft and a great teacher. He established our standards and gave us great and inspiring lessons. I'm not a hot shot by any means, I'm a beginner, but if I was needing someone to help me sort out techniques and take me to the highest levels, Kevin would be the guy!
Oh, we had fun too, and Joanne (who knows everyone here) filled us in on places to go.

We had a great time with Kevin on the calm estuary. Great for beginners or more experienced folks. Saw some interesting fish and birds. Kevin is a patient and good teacher with all the credentials and experience to make you comfortable. He also has a waterproof camera to take some great shots of you and the experience. We also enjoyed some yummy homemade treats. I have been SUP in the ocean with Kevin another time, and that was also great. It's a great way to look down and see what's under the water. Highly recommend a 2-3 hr tour.

We had such a great time on our SUP river adventure with Kevin & Joanne. The river was beautiful and the pictures they took and sent to us were a surprise added bonus! Kevin knew so much about the river and the Costa Rican wildlife. Super well organized and a wonderful memory for our family. Highly recommend!!!

My husband and I and our 3 boys (ages 8 - 13) love SUP. We are thinking about spending half a day paddling in/around Playa Negra or Avellana. One person recommended paddling to a cove and snorkeling though given the surf around there I don't know if the water will be calm enough of good snorkeling? I have also heard nice things about the estuary (but may be buggy this time of year?). What would you recommend?

Hello, I am so sorry for such a late response. I didn't know there was a place to get questions. Not sure when you are planning to come down but at present we have very little swell for the next couple of months. The estuary is a great tour into the mangroves but not the best place to snorkel. We usually take people north where it is less swell and good snorkeling. I have sent some people to Sandy Beach next to Negra and they said it was some of the best snorkeling they have done here in CR. It is being in the right place at the right time. If you want to contact me direct my website is playanegrasupwaveriders.
