Gorgeous church with a wealth of history
Mar 2020
Worth a visit. The interior was a surprise! It’s incredibly beautiful with amazing detail. Hard to imagine it’s stood for centuries. Some renovation happening but we were able to see and appreciate most of it.

A Hidden Gem

The Collegiate Church of The Immaculate is one of the oldest churches in Malta. The original parish church stood on the location of the present church and was built before the Great Siege of Malta of 1565. It became a parish in 1586 and by 1684 the church became too small thus the construction of the present church commenced. The church was finished around 1730. In 1822 the church was elevated to the status of a collegiate church. Fortunately, unlike all the other churches in the Three Cities (Cottonera), it survived the Axis' bombings of WWII. This church houses a great collection of art by local and foreign artists such as Giuseppe Cali, Francesco Zahra, Abram Gatt, Pietru Pawl Caruana, Salvatore Psaila, Mariano Gerada and others. The best time of the year to visit this church is in the first week of December, as it is decorated for the feast of The Immaculate Conception. During lent the church is decorated with black damask and one can see the processional statues which are carried shoulder high during a procession on Good Friday. On Easter Sunday a procession with the wooden statue of the Risen Christ takes place, with the traditional run, where a total of 13 runs take place. Admittance to the church is free and photography is also permitted.

Beautifully restored traditional limestone home between Cospicua and Vitorioso
Jun 2017 • Couples
Jules and Glen run one of the best B&Bs we have ever stayed in. Tastefully furnished and decorated, comfortable suites with A/C, TV, and scrumptious breakfasts for all tastes. Rooftop views over the whole city and Grand Harbour. For a city built on limestone hills separated by water, Julesy's is only 150 steps up from the Vitorioso waterfront with its shops, restaurants, 7min ferry crossing every 30 mins to central Valletta, and some of the most elegant yachts in the Mediterranean...

A must visit if you are visiting the Three Cities. Especially between 28 November and 08th December, feast of the Immaculate Conception or worth a visit also on Good Friday week and on Easter Sunday morning.

Most Beautiful especially 8 December Feast
Dec 2014 • Friends
I was lucky to be in Malta for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception one December a couple of years ago and what a lovely big community experience that was. Delicious food outdoors, beautiful singing to the community statue of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, beautiful white lanterns released into the cool December sky. And a leisurely visit to this beautiful church, with guided access to the Vestry, where one can see and read about the various chalices left behind by previous priests and parish priests. Surroundings red and gold. So lovely.
