Paid RMB200 for a day tour. Of course it would entail shopping stops, the primary income-earning opportunity for the guide (bad system in China, that the tour guide has no compensation at all besides a take from your shopping, I heard!). We had 2+ hours...More

We hired a driver to take us there as although there are numerous bus tours going there, they are mostly groups of chinese tourists with a chinese guided commentary. We spent a few hours there but in hindsight could have easily spent more hours there....More

Vast numbers of tourists flood the Stone Forest daily but this gorgeous area is still worth a visit if you come through Kunming anyways. (Certainly not worth a trip to Kunming in itself,) But if you want a peaceful day and are in reasonable shape,...More

If you've been to Cappadocia in Turkry, it's like that...stones curved in many shapes. You can find cats or eagle or some other stuffs like Cappadocia. Stone forest is well maintained and have lots of green, when we visited was the time of changing colours...More

It was fascinating to see all the rocks in different shapes. Also the tragic legend of the girl was sweet. It is some distance by walk, so you may look at taking a ride in the golf cart bus.

Even though it is a world heritage site it is highly overrated. It is to crowded to appreciate the limestone anomalies.

Highly recommended for the self-guided walking tour. The rocks arew beautiful, the weather is generally great, and the people who work there are friendly. Allow three hours, as there is so much to see.

What I liked about this heritage site is the many different formations of the stones and rocks and the efforts to preserve it despite having so many visitors all year round.

Well worth the effort to get there - bus and taxi or two buses. Self-guided is just fine! You can get away from the crowds.

Stone Forest named Natural Wonder by locals, is an amazing World Nature Heritage site. It has an area of 20 square kilometers.

I hired a taxi for the day. Prices are really reasonable, I think I paid Renminbi 300.

You do not need to join a group. It is fun wondering around and avoiding the groups.

I have 1 full day in Kunming (first place to arrive when coming from the USA ).We are in our mid-sixties and my question is : should we spend that one full day visiting the Stone Forest or should we rather visit Kunming, the nearby lake and the other surrounding attractions nearby ?

Hey Alexander, spend the day to visit the stone forest and the museum. Take some snacks with you or some fruit, there you get only cookies pr something else. For my opinion Kunming is not so nice special at this time... More
