Geological Wonder
Jun 2019
A. Opening Hours : 7 am to 6 pm B. Entry Ticket: upto 18 years : CNY 65 pp 18 to 60 years: CNY 130 pp 60 years above: CNY 65 pp In addition Batery car : CNY 25 pp C. Location : 90 km from Kunming City, Yunnan province of China. Tours are available which costs about US$ 100 pp. One can travel by train from Kunming to Shilin Station, which takes 2 hours, but due to language problem, it is not easy in China to take any public transport.     This natural wonder is a karat formation formed about 270 million years ago in Paleozoic era. Spread about 500 sq km, the area is popularly known as Stone Forest (aka Shilin). Series of all Stalagmite rocks looks like a forest of rocks spread around green topography. In 2007, Naigu Stone Forest area and Suogeyi area are declared as UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE. Tourists enter through the main gate at Shilin Acenic area. One important advice, only carry CNY, there is no foreign currency exchange facility and Visa and Master Card does not work. We made this mistake and had to borrow CNY from our driver to buy tickets. Do buy battery operated bus ticket to have a quick view of the outer area and well. Another advice. You surely need a english speaking guide in this place that will cost CNY 200. Else you will get lost. We made the mistake and were fortunate enough to be assisted by a young local r English speaking guide, Maggie, who seeking our plight, took us in her group and guided us. I visited the place on 24th Jun 2019 from Kunming. We hired a car that costs about CNY 170. It took around 2 hours to reach at the gate. From the Car parking area, battery operated bus took us to the main entrance. The total tour of the tourist circuit shall take about 4 hours and be ready for long walk and wear good shoes. Just after main gate you see a man made water body with stalamite rocks lined inside the pool. The formation of rocks, the water bodies inside rocks, natural sculptures formation of birds, animals, human figure etc are simply mesmerising. ASHIMA point, where legend says a girl in the same name, became rock, waiting for her beloved, is beautiful. Across a green pasture among rock formation, you can identify a particular rock, resembling a girl with a bag on his back, believed, to be ASHIMA. There are plenty of restaurants, souvenirs shop and toilet facility around the park. Once you finish I side tour, a battery operated bus shall take you around the outer area, which is must see, as well. A must see landmark, if you are in Kunming.

石林 - shilin - Stone forest near Kunming - decent 1 day trip

石林 - shilin - Stone forest near Kunming

Get to Kunming and make yourself comfortable in one of the numerous hotels and hostels in the downtown area near the "old train station". We logged in Kunming Chun yue hotel after the hotel we ordered over booing.com had not accepted us.

In the afternoon we found a tourist office just around the corner from our hotel and order this one day trip to Shilin. It was about 250 RMB per person. Including lunch in a common restaurant ticket to the park entrance and bus with a Chinese tour guide.

Pickup at 7 AM at the hotel. Transfer to the bus station. Getting on, 1,5 hour to the scenic spot area. around 3 hours walking around with tour guide. Back to bus. Lunch on the way back with all the travel group. Most of the food is local and pretty tasty. Around 5 return back to Kunming.

Good value for the money. Full day entertainment. We had good weather so the pictures were great.

Majestic view only at the top
Sep 2018 • Friends
I only saw the beauty of this places when I climbed up the stairs to the viewing pavilion at the very top. A very touristy place. Stairways were narrow. Requires some fitness to go up and down the stairs. A nature formations place worth to visit regardless.

Bit of a tourist trap
Aug 2017
The rocks are pretty incredible, however it has unfortunately become completely overrun with tourists waving selfie sticks and tour groups. The main collection of rocks (the one in all the photos) is literally surrounded by people in the summer, you can't get anywhere close... Further away you'll avoid the large tour groups and there are some other interesting areas to look at in the park, including some pretty lake scenes and more rocks, but tbh I wouldn't visit again.

Amazing rock formation but crowded
Feb 2018 • Family
We visited the park during spring festival so we expected big crowds. We only had an afternoon after arriving to Kunming in the morning.

It took about 2 hours from the airport and 1.5 hours to get back to the city by private car. We paid 1300 rmb for the car from airport and to hotel (comfortable minivan), driver who was also and English speaking guide and also a drop off service to the airport next morning. A bit expensive but not too many were available during busiest holiday week.

It was good for us to have a guide as our time was very short and some of that time Was spent waiting in lines at the park to buy tickets and to enter the park since we were visiting right in the middle of spring festival (after Chinese New Year). Park tickets were 140 rmb for adults (usually 175 rmb) and 87.5 rmb for kids. Also purchase bus tickets which are 25 rmb each.

Despite the crowds, no regrets. We got to enjoy amazing rock formations and walk thorough narrow passages, admire nature creations.

Nature's wonder, spectacular. Must see.
Apr 2017 • Family
Get there early and take the electric car to visit the main scenes to save the walking. On a sunny day, bring an umbrella, as the UV is very high, you need SPF50 to avoid sun burn. Wear good walking shoes as the grounds are mainly natural stones.. You should walk up to the top viewing platform to get an helicopter view to appreciate the forest.

Crowded

Went in march. It's Super crowded. The pushing and shouting is extremely frustrating. So much so u just want to snap the iconic 'shilin' wording/section and leave.
