The ruins seems nice, but I didn't have much time, as few minutes afer my arrival they kicked me out, as they're closing at 2PM which is rather odd for a touristic place. Apparently if you want to visit the place you have to either...More

Being able to walk in and around the site makes it seem much more real. The size of the buildings is impressive. Walking and seeing the German machine gun placements was unexpected. The view is beautiful

Going to Crete? Stop the bus and go to Aptera. Step into the Greek time machine and walk about with the Gods looking over you. Enough of the poetry, read the reviews they are all true. If I've endorsed it then say no more.

This site is definitely one for the history and culture day in Crete. It is just 2Euro to enter the site and children are free, students only 1Euro. The Roman bath house, the villa and the amphitheatre are just incredible, add to that the water...More

A good selection of ruins. I wish however there was more explanations on the structures. There are a series of displays in the old monastery which explained more about the history of the site but that was about it. It would be great to see...More

Mostly ruins except for a few constructions. One main building at the entrance was the monastry and has a cobbled courtyard and one room with details of the town's history and an explanatory video. Walk down the hill amongst the ruins and see the large...More

Aptera is located on top of a hill overseeing Souda bay. An important strategic location for defence and survival in the Helenistic as well as the Roman times. Many buildings, and a fair amount of information can be experienced without too many people. A must...More

From the harbor to the Ruins, probably a 30 minute drive. We rented a car the whole time we were in Chania. We have traveled over lots of Europe over the years. Some places are simply public transport is the way to go. And... More
