Archaeological site with great views. Only €2 to get in. The helpful guy at the ticket kiosk explained the area and gave us a simple map outlining the cisterns, theatre and other remains. There's a room in the centre with lots of information boards but...More

Only 2 euros each and free for little ones. A lovely sun trap with none of the large groups and tours (evident from the small car park) some really interesting buildings. Especially the underground cistern and the theatre which are in fantastic condition. The site...More

Roman Hellenic city over a hill overlooking the Akrotiri Bay. Beautiful Roman theater perfectly restored. It impresses the length of the wall circle that embraces this altar to demonstrate the vastness of the city. But apart from the theater, a villa, the spas and the...More

Aptera is not as well-known as Knossos and, as a result, peaceful and not crowded. As another reviewer has noted on here, it's a bit of a hidden gem. Getting here was easy. From Chania it was a 30 min drive. A couple that recommended...More

What did the Romans ever do for us? (as they asked in the Life of Brian). Well, lots, and evidently they did as much for the ancient Greeks. The civil engineering here is astonishing; the water storage sumps are simply awesome. The views out over...More

Easy to find and it cost us only one euro to go around. There is ample parking but there are no refreshment facilities, so make sure you have something with you. The amphitheatre is amazing, as is the temple but it was the cisterns which...More

The ruins seems nice, but I didn't have much time, as few minutes afer my arrival they kicked me out, as they're closing at 2PM which is rather odd for a touristic place. Apparently if you want to visit the place you have to either...More

Being able to walk in and around the site makes it seem much more real. The size of the buildings is impressive. Walking and seeing the German machine gun placements was unexpected. The view is beautiful

Going to Crete? Stop the bus and go to Aptera. Step into the Greek time machine and walk about with the Gods looking over you. Enough of the poetry, read the reviews they are all true. If I've endorsed it then say no more.

This site is definitely one for the history and culture day in Crete. It is just 2Euro to enter the site and children are free, students only 1Euro. The Roman bath house, the villa and the amphitheatre are just incredible, add to that the water...More

From the harbor to the Ruins, probably a 30 minute drive. We rented a car the whole time we were in Chania. We have traveled over lots of Europe over the years. Some places are simply public transport is the way to go. And... More
