From the moment you get to the place, it fills you with joy for wanting to walk through the streets. It is a place that still preservers its original architecture which is perfect for taking many photos.
The food is very rich and cheap si you can try a little bit of everyting and especially the pastes. The visit to the old factory helps you imagine how things happened before, it is a very nice experience where you can have fun but you also know a little bit of his story. It is also a place a varied climate, so it is advisable to wear a hot sweater.

It is a colorful town, bring someone who knows what are main attractions and places of interest.
If you want to try real pastes you have different places some of them are small cozy and strangely good to chat with your companion though parking can turn the place a little bit hedious.

Mexico called "Magic Town" to some places that represent symbolism, legends, history, important events with great opportunities for Tourism. Real del Monte is one of them.
This Town have Cornish and English Influence and You can see in architecture, other thing You will see is Silver Jewelry and have amazing places to outdoor sports like trekking, camping and canopy, I went to "Peñas Cargadas" and this place have great views, rocks, river and mountains.
Real del Monte is 1.5 hours driving from Mexico DF and 30 minutes from Pachuca Hidalgo, If You go to Teotihuacan Pyramids You'll expend around 50 minutes to go there.

This is a two-sided review....
The town/pueblo itself is beautiful. Alot of historical buildings to explore and see. Beautiful scenery from atop the mountian roads that gives you a bird's eye view of the town. The bus tour is fun and inciteful. Excellent food and some nice people around the entire town....
Now the other side the of the coin. The biggest problem i saw with Real Del Monte is the overpopulation of stray/abandoned dogs roaming around the town. As an animal lover that i am it made me extremely sad to see so many helpless and innocent dogs just looking for food and a warm place to stay. It must have been in the mid50s to low 60s when i was there. My sadness quickly turned to anger when i saw locals abusing these poor animals. I saw a few local vendors kick some dogs and chase them away. I could somewhat understand that they're protecting their business but its not like the dogs are looking for trouble. They just wanted something to eat. Maybe they havent eaten in days. Plus there were alot of female dogs that you can tell had puppies somewhere to feed and again were just looking for food. At no point in time did i see ANY of these animals be agressive or violent towards anybody to get food. I ran into a dog that you could see had been struck on the top of its head with something because it was bleeding and looked disoriented as if he couldnt see. Also we saw a dog that was so matted and dirty that you couldnt even see its eyes and for lack of better words looked like an old mop. My wife gave 1 dog a piece of bread and he followed us for at least 3 blocks at no point being agressive or annoying. Just following us at our side like a loyal companion that a dog is....It was truly heartbreaking to witness all this on such a bad and big scale....
For as much tourism as this town receives it should really do something to RESCUE these poor animals from this type of life. It really takes away alot from the beauty of this town to see these helpless animals in the state that they are.....for that reason alone i will most likely not be returning to Real del Monte
Call me biased if you'd like and thats ok. Like i said im an animal lover and i know im not the first or the last person to visit Real Del Monte to feel this way about this issue....

Caution: Do not go on Mondays as many sites are closed. Wear good walking shoes. This is a mountainous area!
There is a lot to see in this lovely quaint towne. Unfortunately, we chose to travel there on a Monday and many places were closed.

When traveling through Mexico do not miss the opportunity to visit their Magic Towns; This weekend I visited Real del Monte, Hidalgo and I was surprised by the beauty of this small mining town. The town is full of good places to taste regional dishes and jewelery shops with good offers in silverware. I was able to witness a staging in the Central Plaza and at the end of the day buy the traditional pastes, which are a delight that is not found in any other region of Mexico, include it in your itinerary.

Same starter as always..... family of five with mom 42, dad 45, a 3yr old, 15 month old, & bilingual driver.
We are always always looking for a reason to leave the city and get out of the dirt and pollution. This is a good strong 2-2.5 hr drive, but it’s a beautiful view. Maybe I was on a 3day weekend high, but this is one of the better drives from our experience - lovely colors, buildings, cactus fields, & 85% smooth road.
I was immediately smitten by the beauty of the view, was completely reminded of Italy’s Tuscan valley and wanted to absorb the weather and beauty - sky and clean air.... what more can you request.
As others have said, the town has a strong British influence across the town square, but is still Mexico at heart. The pitched roofs seem out of place with the concrete, but’s it’s a great site. Like all other Mexican mining tons, the streets are cobblestone, narrow, winding, and extremely steep - leave the stroller at home and wear the babies.
As usual we were here to walk around, eat local, breath, and enjoy the shopping for no more than 6 hours. Take the bi-level bus for a fun one hour drive.... it’s worth the 50 pesos and you get to see the abandoned mine ..... we’ll see it in a quick drive by sense.
Eat at pastels de portales to enjoy the local version of Cornish pie - 20 different flavors (savory and sweet) and the local hot chocolate. It’s an adventure but remember to take the door on the right if you are eating in and not to go.
Again..... we are never in these towns for long, but it’s worth the gas money.

We took a afternoon trip here. The crispness and cleanliness was a nice surprise. We took the bus tour at night. Cold, but beautiful! The guides tell the history with wit. I’m not sure if it’s offered in English. $50 was worth it! Make sure to follow the tour with pastes and chocolate at Pastes el Portal.

Real del Monte is a typical colonial village but with an overlay of British influence from the early mining days. It's definitely worth a stroll around the central area!

After a couple of attempts we managed to take a city tour on a small hop on-hop off style bus. They would not tour for two of us but after the second attempt, a tour official chased up the street as 8 others had arrived. Glad he did. Cost was $45 Pesos each for about a 1.5 hour tour and unfortunately all in Spanish. After passing by the church (Inglesia del Rosario) and city hall we went down into the valley and up the other side to the English cemetery were there are 750 graves from the 1700's on. Who would have thought the English had any presence in Mexico as typically we think Spanish invasion destroying Aztec, Olmec, etc. history along with the catholic church building in many places right on top of the ruins. The church on top of the pyramid in Cholula comes to mind. Oops, got off track.
Anyway the English played a roll in silver mining in Real del Monte and besides the cemetery left a mark on the city architecture. This may be obvious to the trained eye but to us Monte's Centro looks like any other cities in Mexico. The English arrived in the early 1800's brought in by the 3rd Count of Regla to replace the then bankrupt Spaniard Pedro Romero de Terreros, to rehabilitate the mines.
The English also introduced soccer for the first time in Mexico.
The other infusion of English life are the "Pastes" derived from English cornish pastries as many of the English recruited for the mines came from the English mining province of Cornwall. Dough flattened in a circle, filling placed on top, folded over and the edges sealed and baked in a unique paste oven. Monte Centro has dozens of Paste cafes. One is a large operation across from the church with half a dozen employees in the kitchen producing pastes all day. We stopped by at 8 PM and they were still baking and boxing pastes. It appears they must supply other cafes.
After the cemetery the tour recrossed the valley and went high up the other side to one of the abandoned silver mine operations. All we did here was view what could be seen from the tour bus after which we stopped outside the gate for the typical tour mandatory shopping opportunity.
The tour was a good way to view the city and we would not have seen the cemetery or mine ruins had we not taken the tour. It departs just down the main street that runs past the church.
The rest of sightseeing in Real del Monte can be done on foot, mostly along the main road through town, Calle Hidalgo, except for the mining museum located on the highway entrance from Pachuca and above Centro.
