The incredible Wharariki Beach is not far from Cape Farewell, the northernmost point of the South Island of New Zealand. The beach is accessible only via a 20-30 minute walking track from the end of Wharariki Road. Be prepared for wind - when it blows you can not only feel it but see it too! We struck a very windy... A perfect way to discover the golden bay is to go to the parking at Pupongalate in the afternoon, maybe 1700 pm. From there we walked to the other side of the hills, mainly through typically NZ farmland, beautifull, before arriving at the enormous beach where you can find some wildlife if you're lucky. The walk in opposite direction gives... More

Not much to say , wish I had more time here. Weather was poor but I was there in their spring. The whole area is stunning with nice places to eat and fun things to do.

Let me start by saying we are a couple in our late 60's. The sign says 20min walk 1Klm to Wharariki Beach .Let me give you the real facts. Photos attached. The first part of the walk is steps over a fence up an incline to start the 20min?Puponga Hilltop walk. We traveled on farm land with sheep around and... More

Its a bit of a stroll (20 minutes) through paddocks, forest and sand dunes to the beach. Make sure you've got your own water as there are no amenities at the beach itself. Wonderful islands that will just make you want to take your camera out. Can be a bit breezy there, probably best before mid-morning.

Incredible beach. Its an easy walk perhaps 15min through farmland and bush to get to the sandy dunes. Once at the beach you can set off in any direction to explore. To the left you'll find the river mouth which is a nice walk. I recommend wearing sandals/jandals as it can be hard work walking along the sand. - the... More

Wharariki Beach has always been a highlight experience to share with visitors, especially during low tide & calm weather. The sunsets here are spectacular!

huge sand dunes, fabulous scenery and seals on the beach what more can you want. Its a large beach with few people on it, the scenery is stunning, but it can be a bit wind swept

We went at high tide, beach was beautiful, we saw a few seals, and had plenty of time to play in the sand dunes. It's very windy so it pays to bring a wind breaker. Pack a second set of clothes for the kids, mine ended up in the (freezing) water while trying to beat the tide and I was... More

While it is a short walk (10mins) it is worth it. The day was blustery and the sand can swirl, but we were lucky enough to see a baby fur seal and kept our distance.
