A must see and worth a detour to see this wonderful house.

This lovely house never disappoints! I’ve been here a few times now, and each time is just as enjoyable as the last.. the grounds are beautiful and the building both inside and out is just marvellous in every sense.
I have a vivid imagination... and in my head I’m there! .... wonderful!

Superb visit.

Built at the end of the 16th century, this is considered one of the most beautiful Elizabethan houses in England, which was a symbol of Sir Edward Phelips' wealth and high social standing. Fantastic, a little gem, the very best of British. The most amazing paintings, some on loan from the National Portrait Gallery in London. Guide Peter was amazing with his knowledge. Great, interesting film on the cleaning of the magnificent tapestry. This was the site of the filming for Wolf Hall. So glad we visited here, great place.

Really good National Trust house
Oct 2021 • Couples
We are National trust members so we visited here on our recent holiday to Somerset. A really nice property, the house and grounds are beautiful. We spent a good afternoon here walking around. The volunteers are so knowledgeable.

Clipped to perfection....
Oct 2021
wanted a coffee stop on the way down to Devon and had a look in at Montacute near Yeovil- so glad we did. Didn't have time for the house but sampled the excellent home made soup and curry pastie in the pretty courtyard cafe . A quick walk around this impressive Tudor building revealed the most fantastically manicured yew hedges and topiary- really incredible showing the absolute precision of the gardening staff.
Will definitely return and leave time for the interior.

Enjoyable wander back in time
Oct 2021 • Family
As you would expect from the NT, another great example of a house and grounds from yesteryear. We had a baby with us and they were firm that prams weren’t allowed in so ended up carrying her the whole way around the house but apart from that it was a good experience. We went down the road to Barrington Court on the back of this but the house there was closed for repairs. They did however want the same entry fee just to stroll around the garden, which we laughed at and then headed off.

Well maintained house and gardens.
Oct 2021 • Couples
This is a very good example of an English period house and gardens.
The gardens are well maintained and are surrounded by open National Trust land. You are free to roam as you wish.
The house is in very good order and all rooms were open with the exception of the dining room where a tapestry was being rehung.
The staff are very knowledgable and helpful. There are numerous paintings through the house including some on loan from the National Portrait Gallery.
We enjoyed our visit.

Surprising......

Never knew this existed before. The gallery on the second level is simply spectacular. The architectural changes over time are apparent and explained well. It was especially interesting that the main entrance was swapped to the rear.

Great Day at Montacute House
Sep 2021
My friend & I went to Montacute House mid week late morning and had an excellent day. It was obviously the best time to go because there were hardly any people there so no queues and attentive and welcoming staff. The house was GORGEOUS and well preserved. Lots of interesting history. We had a picnic in the picnic area and didn't have to fend off wasps! There was a lovely coffee shop with a good selection of drinks and cakes in a charming courtyard. The shop was full of delightful things to buy especially stocking fillers and the staff were kind enough to provide me with a seat when I was waiting for my friend. We had a lovely day out. Thank you.

Primarily a house visit.
Sep 2021 • Couples
The main attraction is the house but there are a number of walks around the grounds. There are relatively few gardens as such. An interesting property with the three floors culminating in an impressive in size - but unfurnished - long gallery. Well worth a visit. The car parking is close by and there is a cafe and small garden outlet. Plenty of outdoor space to run the kids to lose energy - although they request not in the long gallery!
