Lunch
Dec 2019 • Solo
I was bringing my elderly neighbour to visit a friend in a nearby care home so had to fill a few hours while they were chatting. I chose the salmon (without the sauce) which came with new potatoes and three mixed vegetables. I had a Yule tide chocolate log for desert with a thick dollop of West Country cream. Sadly the log was rather dry. I had a liqueur coffee to follow and the owner tried very hard to try and float the cream on the top. I was the only one in the dining room and the owner was chatty advising me of the best route back to Hampshire as he has a son on Hayling Island. The bill came to £28.90 with a pineapple juice when I arrived. I’m used to more competitive prices on the south coast for an OK lunch but the pub is the only one in the village so no competition.

We visited this pub for Sunday lunch while staying at nearby Long Hazel caravan site. We had a nice walk down into Queen Camel, dodging the rain showers, and had an exceptional meal, Sunday Roast, at a very reasonable price. We enjoyed a few drinks and watched the footie. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our visit to the Mildmay Arms and would certainly recommend this lovely pub. X

6 of us enjoyed an absolutely mouthwatering meal. The prices are very reasonable and the portion sizes are perfect. We visited on our way to Cornwall on holiday and we will be definitely returning on the way home. Cannot reccomend this restaurant highly enough.

First and last time we will go here.

A very disapointing visit, won't be going again. Beef curry was short on supply, not very hot and tough. All our meals were served on cold plates. When you take friends out to dinner you expect them to enjoy themselves; not disapoint them.

Comfortable bedrooms

The pub has three guest rooms. These are tastefully furnished in neutral colours and well equipped, although I couldn’t find a hairdryer. Bottled water is provided along with a kettle, tea, coffee and biscuits with extra supplies in a drawer. There’s a box of tissues on the bedside table. In the bathroom there are plenty of soaps, shower gel and shampoo and, unusually for hotels, a set of drawers and a cupboard under the basin in which to store all your stuff. The bathroom mirror is really cool with a built-in light and clock. I’ve never come across this before. The shaver/toothbrush socket is in the side of the mirror. There is a large walk-in shower with a very efficient power shower. It has a large head and can be hand-held or hooked into the fitting on the wall at your preferred height. There is a useful shelf on which to put your shower gel while you are showering. This is a real plus point. Most hotels have either nothing or a rack with wide-spaced bars which everything falls through. The design shows careful thought. The towel rack is heated. I found the bath towels a bit on the small side and I didn’t like the push-button flush on the loo. These are so difficult to use for anyone with long fingernails. The bathroom was nice and cosy. I liked the soft green nightlight in the bathroom which meant you didn’t need to put the main light on if you got up in the night.

The beds were reasonably comfortable with a cotton bottom sheet and a microfibre duvet cover. Personally, I’d prefer a cotton cover as well as it’s cooler.

There was a chest of drawers and wardrobe with plenty of space for your clothes. There was one chair and a small coffee table. An armchair would have been nice.

The room was very quiet at night.

The TV in the bar gets Sky Sport so you can watch F1 races live during your visit.

The owners were lovely, very chatty and helpful.

I wasn’t particularly impressed by the food although it’s probably typical of the area. Regular dishes include fish and chips, steak and chips, burger and chips with the addition of specials such as cottage pie, gammon steak, and belly pork. There’s definitely room for improvement here, both in the types of dishes offered and in the quality.

A great improvement on previous visits.

Have visited The Mildmay on several occasions and perhaps have been a little scathing at times.
However service has improved, the ambience and decor is better and the food is better.
This is still only a pub with pub food but all OK.

Visited here while staying in the area for some food, was quite empty but is a pub with so much potential just needs a slight spruce up. For example the menus need the £ signs adding & in the restaurant could do with a new lick of paint! This does not take away from the fact it was a brilliant meal! The rhubarb mess was gorgeous I couldn't fault it! And the BBQ meat platter was my partners dream! Definitely worth a visit.
