We enjoyed our morning visit to this truly amazing historic site. You don’t need to plan a whole day for the visit (if staying within an hour of the site) You can easily do a few of the troglodyte sites in the area, or mix in an afternoon castle visit. Early November on a weekday was a great time to visit as it was pretty quiet and very serene with the amazing views. The history of the site is fascinating and they do a nice job providing interpretation signs in French and English. Of note, you need to be able to comfortably walk on uneven ground/do stairs.

Really enjoyed our visit here-we didn’t have a guide. At reception they said it would take an hour to go around ourselves but it takes less than that. Information boards mostly have English translations which were interesting and the views were beautiful of the Vezere river. Our children enjoyed it too.

We went here with the kids because I used to go here with my grandparents when I was a kid. It is ok, but not a wow experience. I would say a nice 1.5 hour add-on to visiting Les Eyzies and the Vezere valley. Pricing is low and not a hindrance to just slap this on to an afternoon. But if you need to prioritize, it is way after Lascaux, Beynac, Canoeing, Castelnaud and some others.

Nice site to visit to get a feel for the regional history and to see how things were done in the old times. Entrance fee is a bit steep for what's offered though. Good to spend about 1.5 to 2 hours.

An interesting and well explained visit. We spent around an hour exploring. We didn’t have the guided tour but felt there was plenty of information available to give us an informative visit. Very enjoyable. Easy to park and a cafe available close by. Beautiful surroundings and views of the river Vezere.

About 8 miles downriver from Montignac and the Lascaux prehistoric cave paintings is a large rock face (300-500 feet tall and over a kilometer long). A passing glacier carved a shelf midway up the face and this cut has been inhabited for 35,000+ years by up to 10,000 people and their domesticated animals at a time.
A small wooden drawbridge was the only entry point. Multi lingual taped self-guided tours were a welcome release from my fractured French interpretations.
Elaborate look out points and sentrys warned of pending and frequent river invasions by Vikings et. al. The Rock is surrounded by verdant farmland and is very pastoral. No crowds when I've been there. Great area to picnic.
Only record of successful invasion/seige was during Hugenots. Certainly worth a couple of hours for a visit.

Roque St Christophe should be on a "must-see" list when visiting the Dordogne. It was not originally on my "list", but some fellow travelers staying at my hotel recommended a visit, and I am glad they did. The setting, overlooking the river, is beautiful but the historical significance is staggering. These "dwellings" were used from prehistoric through medieval times and evolved into a "town" built into a cliff. There is signage/explanations in English and French, which enhance the experience, as well as displays of tools, cooking utensils, building apparatus, etc. A very unique look into how life was so many years ago - and a tribute to the survival of man.

This site is well worth visiting but make sure you have sturdy footwear because it's not always level underfoot.

They have really brought the place to life. Some great little touches to show the different ways it was occupied from the early dwellers at the base through to a fortress and harbour. The video showing the geological formation right through to almost modern day is well presented. Some great views too. A must see if you're in the area

This is a truly amazing village that was built into the side of a cliff in a cave and sadly ordered to be destroyed however there are still remnants there and well worth the visit. It's truly amazing how this village was built and the history behind it.
Definitely add it to your to do list when in the area. Stunning views.
Get there early to avoid the crowds.

Bonjour ! Je prévois de me rendre sur le site en famille, dont notamment un bébé de 3 mois. Le site est-il accessible aux poussettes ou est-il possible de laisser une poussette en consigne ? Merci d’avance.
