It is a very beautiful place to visit. Great Tour guides. My guide Willy did a great job 👍. They follow a very different system of living which is very interesting to know about. Overall Great experience 😃.

I recently went to the Penryn mud sale and bought a quilt in the quilt auction where quilts are sold for hundreds of dollars. They are supposed to be hand-pieced, handmade and works of art. The quilts are held up in the front of the audience for everyone to bid on it. After I paid for my quilt I saw it had a JCPenney's tag on it and it said "made in China". I spoke with Tom Walsh, the chairman for the Penryn mud sale, and he rudely told me that not all the quilts are handmade and that they sometimes are from stores and from overseas. He refused to give me my money back. Be sure to look closely at everything before you buy or bid on anything. Not everyone is as honest as they should be.

My husband and I visited Amish country last September. I loved it so much - the Amish, the crafts, the food, the hotel, the villages, the theater, everything there was so wonderful. The covered bridges, the horse and buggies - the museums, the smells and scents. What a lovely vacation we had - Lancaster, Strasburg, Bird-in-Hand and Intercourse are all so nice. The Strasburg railroad was awesome - something you really have to see in person because pictures and brochures just don't give it the credit that it is so deserving of. I honestly felt like we were back in the old days where there was no crime and people cared about each other. The farms and the scenery were outstanding. Seeing the Amish going about their daily chores and driving down the street in their buggies was so nice to see. I think we should all visit Amish country and take a few lessons from the Amish about how life should be - we seem to have forgotten what is really important in life - possessions, money, status, and conveniences just don't make us any better.

A few friends and I went to Lancaster PA then Bird-in-Hand, Smokestown, Intercourse and Stratsburg. I had an amazing time. The people were friendly, the hotel was great and the food was good and affordable. I would recommend this trip to anyone old and young alike. Go see a play at the FULTON!

When one thinks of Amish Country, PA, hopefully it is not because of those Discovery Channel shows depicting "actual Amish People!" Nothing could be further from the truth.
If you want to take a step back and relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of country life then this is definitely a trip for you. From bucolic country sides, to pristine farms, quaint shops to ultra modern outlet malls, Lancaster County Amish Country has it all. Don't get me started on the food, oh the food is simply heavenly and full of calories. The Amish are hard working people and large breakfasts, and lunches help them to work through their days. Smorgosboards abound around town, one of the best being Shady Maple in East Earl, PA. Don't plan on a Sunday visit to Shady Maple, there is "No Sunday Sales!" Actually, at any Amish run business, there are "no Sunday Sales." The Amish take their Sundays as a day of worship, fellowship and rest. They are people oriented and spend their leisure time with family and friends. They work hard and play hard, but a more friendly group you won't find. My husband and I have made lots of friends among the Amish and visit with them each time we make the journey, an 8 hour ride from our home in NH. The best bakery in town: The Bird In Hand Bake Shop on Gibbons Road in Bird in Hand - ShoFly pie to die for, peach pie, mouthwatering, and books and souveniers galore.Their after Christmas sale is fabulous as well. Want soft pretzels, try CountrySide Road Stand off 772 in Gordonville. In the winter pretzels are only available on the weekend, but in the summer, they are a daily staple. Farmer's Markets at Roots, in Manheim on Tuesdays and the Green Dragon in Ephrata on Fridays offer lots to see and do, and again, food abounds. One thing for sure, you will never go hungry in Amish Country.
Love to quilt, you won't find better, less expensive quality fabric on the east coast. There are many fine quilt shops in New England, but 95% of the fabric I use for my quilt projects comes from Amish Country. My favorite shop, Log Cabin Quilts on Rte 340 in Bird in Hand. Rebecca, one of the young women that works in the shop has become a friend and has a wonderful eye for fabric matching. Ask for her and tell her I sent you. She is one of the many Amish women I have come to know. Tell her, I am the one that called her Rachel for so long!
Amish Country offers something for everyone, from slow pace living, to HersheyPark, a major amusement park with some of the best coasters on the East Coast, Theater groups, buggy rides around the countryside, shopping in quaint shops and outlets, lots of tasty food and enough to do to satisfy any age. Make the trip, step back and experience the slower pace of the Amish people and enjoy one of the best vacations you will ever take.

This was our first trip to the Amish Country in twenty-five years. Things have changed but they have also remained the same. One major change is that the roads into Lancaster have become highways; one major constant is the vast acreage of farmland that remind visitors that we are indeed in Amish Country. Our visit was done with a pre-planned itinerary (for 2 days and 1 night) that was created with the help of previous Trip Advisor reviews. Upon our arrival in Lancaster we proceeded directly to the Lancaster County Visitors Center (very helpful) in order to pick up visitor information as well as discount coupons to restaurants, buggy tours, etc. It is important to note that Sunday is a day of rest for the Amish and a vast majority of places are closed. Adjacent to the Visitors Center is Mr. Sticky's sticky buns, a concession stand that is well worth the visit. There are numerous wineries in the Amish country; we selected the Twin Brook Winery in the town of Gap (approx. 16 miles from the Visitors Center). A must-go-to destination is Kitchen Kettle Village in the town of Intercourse (approx. 11 miles from Lancaster) where there are many shops with local food, jams, quilts (expensive), and wood crafts. The vast majority of products are produced by the Amish people. It is worth noting that the Amish are expert wood craftsmen. If you are looking for an afternoon snack, you need to stop by Carmen and David's Creamery in Lancaster for the most incredible ice cream ever. There are many hotels in Lancaster. We chose to stay at the Cork Factory Hotel, which is exactly what the name implies - a converted cork factory. The hotel was exceptionally clean and "green." We ate at the Plain & Fancy Restaurant in the town of Bird-in-Hand (approx. 9 miles from Lancaster). You may eat either family style with other people or at your own table. Be sure to order their fried chicken. Going for a buggy ride is something that should not be missed. We chose Abe's Buggy Rides in Bird-in-Hand because they use authentic Amish buggies and take only one family at a time. The Amish Country is a wonderful place to visit for adults as well as for families with young and teenage children.

I wonder if I missed something - everyone told me how wonderful and quaint the amish country was. To get there you go on highways and then busy rte. 30 - all lined with outlets, fast food places, corn fields. We went on a buggy ride to amish farms - our horse was dodging oncoming minivans, tractor trailers and tour buses - nothing quaint about that - even stopping at the amish houses - mini vans, ups trucks were flying in the driveway - I feel bad for the amish - all this commericialism and they just want to live a simple life. We went to intercourse and bird in hand - just all outlets again - that was it - went to strasburgh thinking it was going to be this quaint town with trains everywhere - we drove thru i guess the downtown - had 2-3 stores and then you come to a parking lot with a few trains parked - it had a few stores and you can take a 45 minute ride which was the most amish thing we did/saw - you actually saw farms from afar - across the street was a train musuem which was ok if your into trains.

If you really are interested in the Amish and there way of life don't go on a commercialized tour. Just put new Holland Pa, east earl pa, blue ball Pa or intercourse pa in your GPS. You will find authentic Amish at work and a lot of them sell real Amish made items right in front of the farms. I live in new Holland and see the Amish everyday and they are not like the Amish that are involved in the Amish tours. They keep to themselves but will have a conversation with you if you start one. Great for Sunday drives.

We visit the Amish country several times a year, usually staying overnight. The restaurants are great, although some offer quantity over quality. One of our favorites is . Dienner's on Rt. 30. They have a small buffet, Amish-style comfort food, but it's a lot less expensive, only about $10, than most, and the quality is very good. We like to stop at Kauffman's Market on Rt. 340, between Bird-in-Hand and Intercourse, for their bulk-packaged baking supplies, dried fruits, deli, and in season, their pack-your-own mix and match apples. The other place we always go is Miller's Health Foods, on Church Rd. use your GPS, or you will likely not find it. They have organic veggies and fruit, a good selection of groceries, and a fabulous selection of medicinal naturopathic items to help you avoid prescription drugs.
The down side of visiting the Amish country, for us, is that it has become so popular, that the crowds can be a major headache. To avoid the worst times, go on weekdays, avoid holidays, try to visit sites that are somewhat off the beaten path, and patronize Amish and Mennonite-owned businesses when possible. Meeting the locals can be a real treat. Most Amish biz will be closed on Sundays.

I live in Amish Country, so I sometimes forget to appreciate the real beauty that is here in Lancaster County. There is not a bad time to visit this small slice of heaven, but it is particularly beautiful in the Spring and the Fall. Most tourists come to the area and visit the area around the town of Intercourse and route 30 by the outlet malls, as this is where most of the touristy attractions are. These areas are also can have heavy traffic just for that reason. If you want a more tranquil visit, I suggest visiting the town of Lititz, just 7 miles north of Lancaster City. Lititz is a beautiful 1700's era historic town, with many beautiful shops along with one of the prettiest sites in Lancaster County, Moravian Square. You can also visit the Wilbur Chocolate Factory and get a free sample of their world famous Wilbur Buds. Another lovely town in the area is Strasburg. Like Lititz, it too has many great shops in a historical setting. There is the National Train Museum there too. Downtown Lancaster City has really had a rebirth in recent years and is becoming a home to many great artists. If they have a production playing, don't miss a chance to visit the historic Fulton Theater downtown. If visiting Lancaster County, get off the main roads and really experience it. Get a local map, and find the many covered bridges. Stop at an Amish Farm where they are selling fresh produce and often times handcrafted quilts too. Amish country is truly a wonderful place to visit, and some of us even get to live here!

I would like to know where you stayed please. Or where you would fecommend staying

It depends on where in the Lancaster area you would be visiting. If you want to be staying someplace more economical in Ronks, PA (not far from Lancaster), I would recommend the Eastbrook Inn. Breakfasts are modest but rooms are clean, service is very good and the rates are excellent. Next door is another hotel, more upscale and more pricey, the La Quinta. More attractive rooms and substantial breakfasts with a very nice lobby. Have a wonderful visit.

My hubby and I enjoyed seeing the countryside outside of Lancaster this past May. The best route was traveling from eastern Lancaster towards New Holland. Lovely scenery and plenty of farms which is what are you looking for, right? Roads are windy so look out for the Amish buggies.
