Fast and efficient service. I'd say about 35 minutes.
Its the same price if you buy the ticket on the bus .. or at the pier, but once you are on island, there are places where you can buy your return (to Ranong) ticket for just 300 bath.

I read all of the varied opinions on whether one should take the Slow Boat or the Speed Boat and . . . I chose correctly. We took the Slow Boat to go to the island because it really doesn't matter what time you get there and taking the Slow Boat makes getting there part of being there. It is a lovely ride on bench seats with a slanted back, so somewhat comfortable and scenic as well. We met an interesting person on the trip and chatted the time away quite easily. There was a stop on the way in the middle of the river where a passenger was picked up by long tail boat to go to a more remote island. We saw grey dolphins jumping in the wake of the boat and a few flying fish here and there as well. Coming back to the mainland we took the speed boat, as we had transportation to catch, which most people coming back from Ko Phayam will need to do. So . . .it is easy . . Slow Boat there and Speed Boat back! The Slow Boat is almost 2 hours and the Speed Boat is about 40 minutes, but don't forget that you need to plan time to get to and from your hotel too. If you stay at the Tinidee in Ranong, there is a boat ticket seller across from the hotel. The Tinidee staff can tell you how to find it. They even walked us there!

The Ranong Pier is about 15 min from the downtown/bus terminal or 40 min from the airport. There is a yellow air-conditioned bus standing outside the airport for every landed flight. It costs 200 Baht from the airport to Ranong town or the pier.

We took speed boat to and from Ko Phayam. It ticket was 350 Baht/route/person. It takes 30 min with a speed boat which leaves the pier every 30 or 1 hr through out the day. I heard that the Express Boat that costs about 200 Baht takes about 1.5-2 hr. Everything was well organized with reasonable fares.

We booked and paid for 2 confirmed trips on the speedboat (three months before we hoped to take this journey)and arrived at the Ranong pier 45 minutes before our scheduled departure (on the terms and conditions on the ticketing website it states you have to be at the check 15 minutes beforehand) however when we got here we were told it was fully booked and the staff were extremely unhelpful! They did put us on a later speedboat but this was not what I had booked! I am very concerned about the return journey as we have a flight to catch. So BEWARE this could happen to you too. A shame because we have had a fantastic 3 weeks in Thailand with many bookings for all sorts of things and everything has worked out really well! I hope we get the correct speedboat on our return!!!

Going to Koh Phayam there was a bit of chaos what boat to get on...
All luggage is put in a big pile in the middle, but otherwise the trip is OK.
Going back we almost lost one of our bags to a chine company, so try to keep track of your bags, nobody else will do it.

We took the speed boat to Koh Phayam(350B one way) on the way to the island one engine failed and we changed boats mid trip,so not a great experience. On the other hand our return was in an almost new boat and no problems. Photo shows the crew checking the damaged engine

We drove to the ferry terminal and parked there for the week we were going to be in Ko Phayam. The fee for parking was 100 Baht a day. The slow or "normal" boat takes nearly 2 hours. The speed boat takes about 40 minutes and doesn't seem any less scenic to me, just slower. So, whatever floats your boat! You really can't go wrong with either.
However, the trip back to Ranong provided a little surprise in that the arrival terminal in Ranong was 2+ kilometers from where we parked and launched. This required one of us to ride a taxi motorbike to retrieve the car and pick up my wife and luggage. Not a huge deal but an inconvenience.

Either way they are both good, if you are not in a rush take the slow boat or as they call it the Normal boat.....if you have to make it back when the slow boat isn't going to work for you the fast boat is great. Big speed boat gets u there is 1/2 the time.
There is a great little place to stay down at the whale on the mainland called "Star crab resort " rooms from 250bt.
There are a few cafes nearby the wharf for Coffee, breakfast etc....

Well worth a visit, speedboat quick and a good service friendly staff.... On return or were dropped off at a different quay, but a driver was waiting for us, unfortunately nobody informed us, so if the driver hadn't recognised me we would have had a very long walk...... Different quay do to tide being out..... No issues
