This is fourth wooden orthodox church, called tserkva, in Smolnik, constructed in late 18th century. Today it stands pretty much on its own in the middle of nowhere, but it was a central point of the village. That situation changed after WWII, or even later, in 1951. When the WWII ended Smolnik and villages around found themselves in CCCP. It was in 1951 when Poland and Soviet Union agreed big change of borders, and Smolnik found itself in Poland. But all people have gone (they were treated as Russians, and had to stay in Russia, even if the border moved), all buildings were destroyed. Disused church has been tried as a hay and straw warehouse, basic accommodation for backpackers, and who knowes what else. In 1974 finally tserkva got back under the care of church administration, but not orthodox church, as there was no faithful to this rite in area, it became a part of catholic church, as a branch church for the Lutowiska parish. Access to the church from main road by quite bumpy road made of concrete slabs. Tserkva stays open on sundays in july and august from 9-17. Outside of this hours there's a small notice by the door with contact details for person with the keys, to open the church for visitors. Never tried that, don't know, if it works. In 2013 church in Smolnik has been inscribed onto Unesco's World Heritage List, as "Wooden tserkvas of the Carpathian region in Poland and Ukraine", together with 15 other such churches, 8 of them in Poland, and eight in Ukraine. A must see, when in Bieszczady.
