Visiting the most important church in this city, where the miraculous painting of the Patron Virgin Mary of Colombia is kept by the Dominican priests, has been a very satisfying experience. Every Colombian and all foreign visitors should come and observe the positive changes that have been made on the entire church.

We arrived at the Basilica in time for Sunday Mass. I knew very little about the story of the miraculous image, but I was overwhelmed by the devotion of the people. This is the patronal shrine of Colombia. In some respects, it is very similar to Our Lady of Guadalupe. It’s off the beaten path but should not be missed.

Awesome church! The people there were very friendly. We asked if we could see the Virgen de Chiquinquirá up close and they let us and then the priest came out to meet us. He gave us a blessing and a gift of the rosary.

On our way to Villa de Leyva. This is a beautiful church. Plaque when you first enter which commemorates the visit of John Paul II. We happened to be there when they were celebrating a weekday morning mass (10, 11 & 12 weekdays plus other times later afternoon.). Our guide told us on weekends parking is extremely difficult and parking rates more than double.

This is just a very lively and fun place to visit, even without going into the church, which we didn't - we just wanted to see where the Colombian equivalent to Mexico's Virgin de Guadalupe has her shrine. and it's right on the way down from Villa de Leyva to the Salt Cathedral, so why not? What we liked were all the families out enjoying the sunny afternoon, with lots of food carts and bubble wands of every type for sale all over - the little kids were having a blast! The Spanish Catholics really left so many lovely sites to visit, and this is one of them. Colombia is a VERY Catholic country, btw - if that is your faith, you will feel right at home here.

The town is very interesting with some classical spanish style balconies and a traditional central plaza in front of the Basilica. The Basilica is a beautiful, very sacred place which is visited by many pilgrims as is the well where our Lady appeared. There is also another church siuated on a high spot in the town. There are a few good quality restaurants in the plaza. Well wortth a visit even if you are not a Catholic.

In my long life I had not had the opportunity to visit this sanctuary. Upon entering I was amazed by the supernatural beauty of the temple, the silence that invites prayer and the transcendent luminosity that surrounds everything. I was fortunate to attend the Holy Eucharist in the front row, in front of the structure that houses the precious image of Our Lady.
