About South Albania Trail
Within easy reach from Port of Saranda and the south coastline, “South Albania Trail” is an opportunity to explore the southern Albanian mountains. It is a region where time has stood still, full of culture, medieval villages, pastorial life and ancient trails, where Macedonian and Roman legions once walked and where you can experience epic hikes, deep canyons and mighty peaks.

I enjoyed hiking and off-roading through the trails of Kurvelesh region with my friends and brother. The trails are sparsely marked, nevertheless not hard to follow and the environment is beautiful, wild but inviting. Nivica village, the oldest and most scenic settlement is what we liked the most. We started off in Tepelenë and hiked in the Bënça gorge, past the villages Veliqot and Bënçë. Instead of crossing into the river, we hiked uphill and roamed through a trail that led to a few welcoming shepherds' huts (stane), on the southern slope of Mt. Dutihe. After hiking for 19 km, we reached the plateau of Nivica. We stayed at the "guesthouse on the canyon", where a couple from the village has returned after several years in emigration and invested in their traditional houses to host guests and tourists. The surroundings are beautiful and their food is absolutely one of the best treats we enjoyed on our trip. Delicious freshly cooked local specialities that will make ones' stay. In the morning we walked around the village, that has a stunning location on the edge of the canyon. A renovated central square and the ruins of a crumbled ancient castle (dating from the 4th century BC) are the main attractions, but the outdoor activities to follow are numerous. The canyons are perfect for climbers and for extreme air sports too. An ongoing project has done a lot to bring to the tourists the unique heritage and hospitality of this place, also organizing a proper structure of guides and accommodations. Afterwards we drove to the village Kuç, another challenging adventure. The first 5 km are asphalted, while most of the next 10 km until the village, we drove on the riverbed of Shushica and crossed the river around 10 times. Perfect for those who enjoy off-roading in the wild. Overall a great experience!

It is a great area for nature lovers. hiking, trekking horse riding and in particular the canyons. However, this area has a unique pastoral life still strong since ancient times. Fascinating is the temple of the sacred oaks, a place where people still worship and sacrifice to the spirit of the oaks.

This is an incredible part of the world, with some of the most beautiful views I have ever taken in. In Spring, temporary waterfalls cascade from fresh snow melt on the higher reaches. In summer, the evenings are warm and it's great to relax in the fresh air. Trails are spectacular and full of life. Highly recommended. Nature lovers will be amazed at the variety of bird species in particular, including the Egyptian Vulture. Explore the canyons, trails, woodlands and the wonderful local community!
