A place where Divine Art meets Eternal wisdom. The Sri Chennakeshava Temple at Belur, built in 1117 AD by the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana, is an extraordinary example of Hoysala architecture and artistry. Now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, stands as a monument to divine craftsmanship and historical grandeur. The temple is renowned for its intricate stone carvings that cover its star-shaped exterior. These carvings, depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and various mythologies, highlight the masterful detail of Hoysala artists. The Madanika sculptures, in particular, are celebrated for their grace and delicate beauty. Among the most notable carvings on the temple’s exterior is the "Ashta bhuja Chaitanya Students Exam Ganesha". This rare depiction of Lord Ganesha, with eight arms, blessing a group of students, beautifully symbolizes wisdom and intellectual growth. The carving is a unique blend of spirituality and academic reverence, showcasing the deep connection between divine blessings and human effort in ancient Indian culture.Students offer prayers before their examinations. Pray for knowledge and wisdom. This was described to me by my father who was born here in Belur(1936).His favorite. The Chennakesava temple of Belur is one of the best preserved temples of the Hoysala dynasty of Karnataka. The Hoysalas were famed for the creation of intricately carved temples during their reign and the Chennakesava temple along with the Hoysaleshwara temple of Halebeedu mark the epitomy of their skills in this area. The temple itself is a living temple which means that the deity has not been destroyed by any invaders and therefore is worshipped as per Hindu traditions to this date. It is a well preserved temple and is a must visit for every history and architecture lover. Pure poetry in stone. The temple is well maintained and guides are available at the entrance of the monument. Definitely engage a guide as it will enhance the experience a thousandfold. The guide will walk you through all the main sculptures and architectural details including the famed statue of Shantala Devi, the beautiful queen of King Vishnuvardana, the most famous of the Hoysala rulers who commissioned this temple. Definitely stay until dusk (7:00PM) when the temple closes as the changing light illustrates the full glory of the monument. The legend of Shantala Devi, of the great scupltor Jakanna all come to life as the crowds dwindle and the light starts fading.

Read about the temple and the Hoysalas in our history books, this temple is an architectural marvel. Built somewhere in the 12th century this is a prime attraction for the tourists here. There are many monolithic structures here and it is a treat to your eyes. The detailing provided in these structures through manual carvings are unbelievable. The carvings are even better than the ones you find in Hampi. A photographers paradise. This is a must visit place and would surely recommend. There is ample parking space and entry is free.

While coming back from Nirvara Plantation Stay in Sakleshpur, our first pit stop was at Belur. Belur was a one hour drive from our stay, while it could be a four drive from Bengaluru. You can make it a one day trip although it would be a tiring one to travel from Bengaluru to Belur and finish everything in a single day.
The Chennakesava Temple in Belur was built in the 12th century and it still holds great significance to many. The temple was not very crowded on a Monday and we were able to take our own sweet time exploring the architectural marvel. One does not have to pay any entry fee to visit the place, there is ample parking available, and the timings are from 7 A.M to 8 P.M. There are quite a few guides available in the premises and it is advisable to use their services to get a better understanding of the temple and it's glorious history.
The Hoysala dynasty have left behind some of the most beautiful architectural beauties in Karnataka and this is one of those places you should surely visit.

This temple, a shining example of the Hoysala dynasty architecture and also, Indian architecture, is about four hours drive from Bengaluru. It is a must visit monument for history and architecture enthusiasts, and even for general public who should not miss this gem of a temple, adorned with sculptures that took 103 years to finish. The temple is remarkable for its architecture, sculptures, reliefs, friezes, as well as its iconography, inscriptions and history. One feels proud to see the craft and diligence of our ancestors and this is a place where history can be seen with one's own eyes!

The ChennaKesava temple is one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture. Dedicated to Lord Mahavishnu in the Mohini swaroopa, the temple also houses shrines to Goddesses Shridevi (Mahalakshmi) and Bhudevi (Andal). The base of the temple is a Srichakra. The temple structure is made of stone and covered in beautiful intricate art on some of the most important stories in India's ancient scriptures. Equally impressive are the carvings inside the temple. The main idol is gigantic and made of Saligrama. One unique aspect is that the location of the Shankara and Chakra are reversed in the Lord's hands.

The intricate carvings of this temple make it very impressive especially when you consider that it was built in the 12th century and therefore has survived centuries of erosion. The large open space also gives the area a tranquil atmosphere.
There is not much information concerning the history of the temple which would significantly improve the experience.

It's a beautiful example of Hoysala architecture and art. It's a temple of Lord Vishnu, surrounded by many small temples. This is declared as a heritage site by Archaeological Survey of India. The stone carvings around the place are breath taking. Car parking space is available outside the temple at a price of INR 50. Some veg restaurants outside the temple provide delicious veg food. Walking around the temple during afternoon is difficult as the stone floors get really hot. Prasadam is available for purchase at entrance. Better to visit during morning hours.

Being an architecture lover, one cannot miss this. It has got very intricate detailing which should not be missed. One should take the help of guide to understand the meaning behind and the connection between those carvings. The speciality of the place is that each and every pillar is carved differently so, there are no two pillars or carvings alike. Built in hoysala architecture style , it is worth stopping by and visiting belur temple dedicated to lord chennakeshava.

Hi AswinSrinivas,
You can visit Chennakesava Temple at Beluru on your way to Chickamagaluru from Mysore. You need to travel from Mysore to Hassan then Beluru to reach Chickamagaluru. Chennakesava Temple is located in Beluru Town, 2 kms from the main road junction.
In Chickamagaluru you can visit Baba Budangiri, Mulayangiri, Kemmangundi if you are interested in trekking. You can visit Sringeri, Horanadu, Kalasha if you are interested in seeing Hindu holy places and temples. You will pass through Kudremukha National Park if you plan to visit these holy places. You can stay in resorts/home stays in the coffee estates of Chickamagaluru to enjoy the estates.
