The guides at the gate are super nice, knowledgable but English is limited. I went with my husband who speaks Kannada and he translated for me. Definitely recommend a guide because it’s easy to get lost, plus they can point out a lot of things that might be missed.
Ticketing was a huge pain: have to use a QR code. If you’re foreign with limited cellular service, it might be a challenge and there is NO CASH option. If you have people who are Indian citizens and foreign (like my husband and I), you will have to do separate transactions. Wear proper shoes (like running shoes). The stairs are uneven height (some quite a step up), some of the stones are worn smooth, others are fairly craggy. Go early or in the late afternoon or you will cook in the sun. There is very little shade. As a person who is melanin-challenged (even though I tan easily), this was a concern. We had an abbreviated visit - 2 hours - and barely scratched the surface. This place is HUGE and definitely doesn’t get the attention it deserves. There were so many battles and “transfer of power” (read: conquerors) that took place, many examples of Indian engineering and brilliant creativity from so many centuries ago. Great stop if you’re visiting Hampi or worth a quick visit if you’re in Bengaluru or any other surrounding area in driving distance. @Government of Karnataka: This gem is a real opportunity for tourism, historical preservation and state pride!!!!

The Fort name Chitrakaldurga means picturesque fort in the local language. With seven circles of fort enclosing several hills, water reservoirs, and ancient temples it is a beautiful sight to see. The oldest temple is the Hidimbeshwar temple from the legend of Mahabharata, where Bhim had a duel with the giant Hidimba. The present fort is the work of multiple dynasties spanning from the 11th to the 18th century. A visit of 3-6 hrs is recommended based on how much of the fort you plan to see.

This is one of the most impressive forts i have been to in the country. Quite well kept. Spread over a massive area (was told about a 1,000 odd acres) ... requires most of a day to explore it. Spent about 3 hours there (starts shutting down at 6 pm). The remanants of once functional temples, palaces are well preserved for the most part.
Please do take a guide - they are govt. authorised and the one we hired kept us hooked with his tales of valour, history of the fort, conquests.
Wear comfortable walking shoes. A cap would be recommended - not a lot of shade . There's a small canteen midway into the fort and water / tea / snacks can be purchased.
Ask the guide (after the tour I guess) for a way up to one of the watch towers. There's one with a precipitous climb and some others with a slightly easier approach. The views from the tower(s) are quite impressive.
An impressive heritage place, and good to see it being maintained well. There are dustbins all along to reduce littering.
Highly recommend visiting the fort if you are around Chitradurga. We made a trip from Bangalore just to see it (after hearing and reading about it). Was well worth it.

We (group of 5, with parents) left Bangalore at 8:30AM on a hired cab. Breakfast enroute around 9:30 AM. Got lunch (Upadhya veg, recommended as we couldn't find many great places in the town) before taking detour from the highway to the town. Fort is just 10min from the highway. Reached the fort post lunch at 1:00 pm. Hired a guide (400₹). Spend good 4:30 hrs including the climb to the top watch tower (weapons store).
Had an amazing and relaxing time with family. Left at 5:30 pm, reached Bangalore by 9:30pm.
Great drive and a great place. Will recommend and will go again.

It was surreal experience to actually see the Onake Obavva's kindi, the story of which we heard so many times. The fort itself is massive, with many temples and artifacts to see. Our guide Channabassappa (98868 43330) explained very well all the attractions within the fort. The view from the top is excellent. Can also see 70 windmills. Overall good historical place to visit. Need couple of hours

Chitradurga Fort is massive and steeped in history. With plenty of spots to visit, you need to cherry-pick the ones you want to see to
optimise time. Onake Obavvanna Kindi & the various temples are the highlights.

Awesome place to visit for those who love history... Great place to teach children on history as well. Very neatly maintained, good arrangements for drinking water and rest rooms. Really enjoyed the time..Be mindful of guides who ask for their service, bit it's there buisness. Parking could have been better...

We went there in the morning around 7. But the sun was so bright. It would be good to go there at 6 in the morning. The fort is open at that time. Or may be in the evening when sun is not that bright. You will a lot of parrots and squirrels there. The view from the top of the fort is really nice. You can have a birdeye view of the city. We went there with our son who is 35 months old(2yr 11month). He was able to walk most of the times. But at some places he was us to carry him. It’s difficult to carry a child and go up on the fort. Carry some snacking items as you won’t find anything there. Beware of the local guides. Even if you say No to them they will keep following you.

Must visit fort if you are a history lover. It is spread in huge areas so wear proper shoes.
Here a guide, there are so many stories that you get to hear. Everyone loved this one. While coming back from this place we had our breakfast at lakshmi tiffin centre as it was recommended to us by locals. The tiffin centre has awesome dosas.

It should not be. Lots of people visit the fort on national holidays as it is a tourist attraction.

Hi.. we are Senior Citizen keep visiting new places. Is it requires to climb large steps to reach the fort top or requires lot of walking. We are all crossed 60, 65 and some are in 70s. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance

Hi Sivam,
Yes it requires a lot of walking and climbing to be done if you want to cover the entire place. The area is vast. However; we had taken along our grandfather who is 80 plus and our grandmother who is about 70 years old. They were able to ascend and descent slowly and saw a few places if not all. It’s a very beautiful location. Must visit if u can. Book the KSTDC approved guest house close by. The rooms are neat, the view at night is amazing and some decent food as well.

Have been there twice (once alone and once with my family). A must for all going from Bangalore to Hampi (its about midway). Road from B'lore is great but the rest of the way to Hampi will slow you down (but it is not bad). The fort itself is an excellent place to visit. Does involve climbing some steps but the sights within are worth it. I'd recommend spending at least two hours.Take water if you visit in summer (there is a small shop Inside but it doen't sell much). No restaurant in Chitradurg, just shops selling biscuits, chips, cold drinks etc.

In my understanding, there are many good hotels and restaurants within 2 to 5 Km radius. I would also advice a visit to Laxmi tiffin house, which is walking distance- it is a pure south Indian joint, reasonably clean.
As a general note vegetarian restaurants and joints are generally cleaner and better- but they may not look so!!.

Is it hill station?? How is the road for car self drive? Any inclined narrow routes are there??
Written December 31, 2016
its not a hill station. its a fort town. there is a national highway connecting Bangalore to Chitradurga.

I am fascinated by such ancient places and would like to explore it a lot. But, I am a senior and would like to do it over two days. Are there different areas you can go tp from the main entrance, so you do not have to go back over the same route again if you go back on a second day???
Written June 17, 2016
Unfortunately there is only entrance. However one can do the tour of the left side of he entramce on day 1- the more interesting, comparatively better maintained and more visited than the other side. I went with my mother,a more enthusiastic soul than me. A way to not be exhausted is to visit the place at the earliest. Eaely morning makes it more comfortable and we can see more od the fort. Don't think twice before taking multiple short breaks. It's a place to breathe, stay and look around. Apart from the fort, the view of the large windmills and mountains around is also breath taking.
Happy visit.

hello friends,
i am planning for one trip to chitradurga with family . i am living in bangalore
could you please guide me , how i can manage this trip in one day , what are the best options
Written December 19, 2014
Answers to the questions that I am aware of
2. There is a Mayura yatri Nivas almost opposite to the fort and that can be one option for food. It is walking distance from fort entrance and you can see this from the fort
4. Entry fee is Rs.5 for adults above 15 years ( I visited few months back and hopefully this has not changed)
5. Chandavalli garden is around 3-4 kms from from the fort.
