About
The crystal clear light blue lagoon of Rummu quarry and the adjacent ash hill are a unique combination and a wonderful destination for a day trip. The mining of Vasalemma limestone and marble in the Rummu quarry started as early as 1938 and the prisoners of Murru Prison were used as labour. The spoil gradually turned into an ash hill. At one point, the work ended, the drainage of water was stopped, and the quarry flooded. The industrial buildings, equipment, and trees were submerged. You can enter Rummu quarry at summertime or with prior booking as the area is private territory. At summertime you can visit our summercafe, swim, hike up to the hill or take part of Murru prison guided tours! See you in Rummu!

We were there at around 7.30pm, place should be open till 9pm, at the entrance we paid 4€ each, not 3€ as it says here.
We parked the car at the parking inside, asked the staff if we can go for a swim in English, guy turned around and disrespectfully yelled in Russian - Again? So we asked him the same question in Russian and he said that they are closing down and we have to leave ASAP, we told him that we just came, we have paid already and girls at the entrance said we can stay here till 9pm, so we had about 1,5hour, he said he doesn’t care, they didn’t have a lot visitors today, so they are closing.
My friends daughter was with us, when that bloke was getting into his car he yelled disrespectfully - if you won’t be at the entrance in 10min, you can sleep here till tomorrow morning with that kid.
We came all the way from Latvia to see that unhappy old c*nt who took our money, kicked us out and refused to give our money back.

Cost of 6 euros, just to enter and look at abandoned ruins. I understand charging admission to the establishment but paying to look at ruins of a prison seems absurd to me. By the way they are doing the works and many areas have been closed, we came here 9 years ago, when still no one profited on this place and at the time it was really a special thing to see, it was all as it had been left, but now it is all destroyed to build you do not know what, inflatables in the water, pedal ', almost to ridicule the memory of what 'fu.Sito particular but that has lost so much of its Urbex charm, shame!

Coming from the cliffs and magnificent beaches of Turisalu and the very special atmosphere that I loved about Paldiski, I was rather disappointed with Rummu. The prison on the lake is unusual but there is nothing more. The view from the top of the cliffs is OK. In short, there is nothing really special apart from this abandoned building, standing alone on the lake, and which served as a prison during the Soviet era.

We wanted to see everything linked with historical Rummu prison and diving should be the main priority for all the visitors as you get the chance to explore ruins under the water, instructors provide you a chance to see amazing views not only of the ruins, but also of a life under water. Besides, they are beautiful human beings so everything was explained in a very clear and understandable way. One of the best decisions I have made so far and I strongly recommend for others!!

The place is called Rummu quarry. There is closed mainingquarry from Soviet era. After closing the maining filled water and also buildings left partly under of water.
Water is cold but clear and there is nice sandy beach. At warm summerdays there is youngs and families at spending time.
Very unusual place, even spoky but at same time beautiful and calm...
This place is in Rummu village, near to Ämari NATo base. Distance from Tallinn is 45 kilometers to west

We were very excited to visit the ruins of the prison and unfortunately due to misinformation on the website of the attraction itself we ended up taking a two hour taxi drive for no reason as all we saw was a barbed wire fence with a sign saying “closed”. The disappointing thing is that the website stated that the place would be open daily from 12-7 which is ridiculous and when we tried calling no one would answer. In addition the taxi driver which was local didn’t even have an idea either so I would suggest going in the weekend as there was a sign on the entrance gate which said so!

The view is breathtaking but the gate is closed so you have to smugle in and be aware of the guard..

Definitely worth visiting. We hiked around the lake (which is also quite beautiful) and went swimming at the prison site. Entry to the abandoned prison site is 3€, and in August 2018 the gates opened daily at 12:00. You get a wristband and can basically access the whole site.

Public transit from Tallinn can be tricky (Google Maps suggested a bus route that didn't exist), but we used the Pilet/Estonian transit app, and that worked. The trip takes about 1 hour and costs 4€ per person - tickets are bought directly from the driver on the bus.

On an August afternoon, it was a fantastic experience: not too crowded, incredible abandoned buildings, clear water, and lovely little beach. The hike up the Ash Hill is also great and offers an amazing view of the whole sunken complex.

I'm a scuba diver and after I read an article on russian diving forum tetis.ru about this amazing dive site two years ago I decided that must to go there and dive there.

Speaking in advance - yes, it was absolutely great and my expectations were fulfilled completely!

Finally I used a long 3 days summer weekend in Russia to travel here by car together with my kids. Two my other friends-divers with their families joined us.

Tago from maremark.ee helped us with the diving organization. It was possible to live in his facility near the career but we decided to stay in Tallinn and enjoy entertainments and attractions of the Estonian capital, especially it was my first visit there.

Rummu is a small town in 50 km from Tallinn so the road took just a bit more than an hour

The career is rather big so some parts of it are free to enter and have a convenient access by car while others are either private property or secured territory. Most underwater objects are located close to the shores of secured territory so it is up to you either to swim several hundred meters on the surface before go underwater or contact with Tago or paekalda.ee to help you.

The visibility under water is great - we had more than 10 meters. The depth is in average 3 meters, maximum 6. In the beginning of June water temperature was 14 degrees so we used dry suites.

There are some buildings under water with the rooms so if you plan to dive inside you have to be experienced enough. There is no labyrinths and long distance overhead environment so you don't have to have cave diver certification and you don't need to take reels and spools if you have it :) But a good light will be a plus.

There are several objects to visit there - a garage, an elevator building, a prison wall and an underwater forest. An underwater navigation between is rather simple - there is a lines passed between objects and a map I put here

It is a beautiful live nature around including several big swans, ducks, frogs, lunches and be careful we noticed a viper there.

So after dives we had a barbecue dinner and then drove back to Tallinn.
A couple of dives with 1 hour each would be enough, so you don't need to plan to spend here several days for diving but we noticed that in the paekalda facility you can find some watersport equipment to rent for example sup boards.

Here are quite a few things to enjoy. You can stay on the small beach, near the lake or pit with crystal clean water. You can swim and reach on of the ex-prison buildings.

I've seen people do scuba-diving there.

But the most I've enjoyed scenic views from the top of the ash-hills.
