As caves go, I have seen more beautiful examples. But, this cave has some of the earliest examples of art known at present. That alone makes the visit worthwhile. Drawings have been found and carbon-dated to around 28,000 years old. That makes them the second oldest examples of human art yet discovered. It was a moving experience to see something... More

We visited these caves whilst staying in the lovely little village of Arcy-sur-Cure. The caves were excellent and well worth the small cost and time. The cave paintings were excellent and the guide extremely friendly and enthusiastic. The only down side was that the guide only spoke French and so we had to make use of the leaflet provided (with... We visited this place after a recommendation and the caves are very pretty although as I don't speak very good French, it was impossible to understand the tour guide. As a result, the only information we gained was from the pamphlet, which was informative, but not quite the same. I've been to similar caves in South Africa and although this... More

We visited the site at the end of September 2015 and were full of anticipation. The woman at the kiosk, who spoke English, was very knowledgeable and informative. Our tour consisted of four persons, all understood English, but not French. The older male guide spoke only in French and appeared totally uninterested and patronizing, simply going through the motions with... More

Tucked away in deepest Burgundy just off the main road from Auxerre to Avallon and very close to the sleepy village of Arcy sur Cure are the Grottes d'Arcy sur Cure. Actually I live in Arcy and like anything close by it took me a long time to get to visit them. When one thinks 'underground' one tends to reserve... More

We were very lucky to be the only family to be on the site when the mid-morning tour (11:30am) started and effectively got our own private viewing. Usually the tours are conducted in French, but as we were the only ones there, our wonderful guide said that she would give us the tour in English which was very appreciated. The... More

The site itself is stunning but we felt that the guiding was very poor. There were too many people in the group so we couldn't see properly; the guide spoke very strangely accented French and we couldn't hear him properly because of the acoustics of the caves; he took the group round at a pace which felt rushed given the... There are quite a few caves here with ancient drawings, if your a walker here is some of the most beautiful scenery, walk between the little villages along the river, it's not too far and relatively flat. July was quite hot and August will be even hotter with most of France going on holidays, so pick spring and autumn for... More
