The Janauary, a kind of swamp at the point that the rivers Solimões and the Rio Negro join to become the massive Amazon river, is just opposite of Manaus. Any Porto (small harbor) has boats that can take you at any time.
Ok, you cannot totally compare the Janauary with the upstream jungle of Anavilhanes or other remote areas. But it is amazing that after all these years of growth (and recent recession) of Manaus, the Janauary has not really changed. It still offers a great first view on the simple lifestyle of the ribeirinhos, families which live on the shores of the river. And still offers a feeling of how it is to go by boat in between the Amazon forest.
It is still one of the very very rare places to see Vitoria Régias, the famous waterlelies. And at night you still can spot and hunt the local kaymanncrocodile.
Don’t be too disturbed by the touristic way that animals are shown. This happens this way for over 40 years now, and is part of the local tradition. It is not fully in line with modern sustainability but it sure is part of local culture.
Food is great at rainha da selva. Don’t go with very high (end of June) or very low (end of November) water.
A full tour takes you 4-6 hours.

One of the most beatiful natural place where i ever have been was Janauary Park.
With a amazing singularity view, everyone should be there at least once in life.

Janauary Park is the stop of most rides on the Negro River for lunchtime. The best of there is surely the floating restaurant, which is great. The suspended wooden structure needs repairs, including, the part that leads to the giant tree is banned and no forecast for reform, and unfortunately we could not know. The lake of victory regia was not beautiful, maybe by the time of year, as it was quite dry and with the plants accumulated.
