Punta del Este Shore Excursion: Private Sightseeing Tour of Punta del Este

19 reviews
When your ship pulls into port at Punta del Este, spend half a day on a private shore excursion of the coastal resort town in southern Uruguay. Marvel at ocean views from Punta Ballena (Whale Point) before your guide drives you through sophisticated downtown neighborhoods. See the sailboats of unspoiled Playa Brava, a popular beach featuring whimsical sculptures, and stroll along Gorlero Avenue and Artigas Square to browse local shops during a bit of free time. Round-trip port transport by private vehicle is included.

Is Puente Leonel Viera a bridge or is it a roller coaster? You can cross the Maldonado River between Punta del Este and La Barra on it, so that makes it a bridge, right? Many who cross, though, do so at high speed to produce the stomach-dropping feeling you get when you catch "big air" at the humps, so that makes it a roller coaster, right? The bridge was built in 1965 by Viera, who had no experience in engineering or architecture. He was the first to design a bridge like this, a "stressed ribbon bridge," essentially a suspension bridge but with the suspension cables INSIDE the bridge itself. Viera created what is now the Punta del Este-to-La Barra span. A second span, now carrying traffic from La Barra to Punta del Este, was added in 1998. TIPS: * This is a little dangerous to drive on since motorists speed across to create the roller coaster effect. Be careful. * The newer bridge, carrying traffic from La Barra to Punta del Este, is said to be the better "roller coaster." It's the one our tour bus driver did his speeding on!

This dual bridge is quite unique. Each of the two lanes of the bridge is a double curve. It is both a vision to behold and an experience to travel over in a vehicle!

Never seen a bridge like this wavy one, cool when you go with some 60km/hr. Feels like your brain get lifted. Nice design

While this is a very unique bridge that they made another one to make each one way it is worth a drive, especially if the driver goes fast over the bumps.

We were in town on a cruise, and some ex-pats adopted us for the day, took us out to lunch. The drove us all over in their cute little Peugeot convertible, and this included going over this bridge very fast. Wheeee!
