We wanted to do a glacier trek at Matanuska Glacier while our family of four was traveling the Glenn Highway and wound up going with MICA partly because it was the most convenient time, but it turned out to be a great stroke of luck. When we got to the glacier after a brief but thorough safety/equipment briefing, it turned out that our group was much smaller than the other guided treks going on there, and seemed like we were able to access many more parts of the glacier and see a lot more stuff.

Highlights for us (dad/mom/15- and 13-year-old) were traversing the crevasses, feeling the sedimentary sludge and filling our water bottles from the ice-cold stream coursing down the side of the ice. Another one of the best parts about the roughly 3-hour hike was our guide Daniel whose enthusiasm and glacier knowledge were pretty infectious and helped some in our group forget their nervousness. The "cowboy walk" he demonstrated came in handy with some steeper grades later on in our trip and his "OH yeah!" catchphrase is still in circulation with our kids. It was a great afternoon in beautiful conditions out on the ice.

What an experience! We were on the advanced trek with our tour guide Warren. I never would imagine this trip to be this great. The trip was originally from 10 am to 5 pm, we made it back one hour earlier because all team member were able to walk at a fast pace without taking many breaks. Our tour guide Warren provided us all the gear needed for this trip, and made sure we were safe the entire time walking on the glacier. The guide to clients ratio is 1 to 4, which is amazing. We saw people with other tour company in a group of 20 people on the first part of the trip, then we walked pass the crowd and owned the entire park to just few of us who did the advanced trek. It rained like a dog that morning, but once we were at the parking lot and ready to go, the rain stopped and we had a wonderful time on the glacier without getting wet and cold. We also did a little bit of ice climbing, it was harder than expected but the experience was a lot of fun. Warren is very knowledgable and professional. I would high recommend this trip to anyone who would like to "walk on the moon".

This is the perfect excursion for those who love to get out and actively experience a bit of Alaska.

We booked with MICA Guides in and were very pleased at all the details they thought of- from the list of things to bring/clothing to wear, to the concise instructions on how to find where they’re located. They even included approximate travel times from different locations to make planning travel easier; their advice to leave extra travel time due to construction was on point. Gear provided: helmets, micro spikes, hiking boots (even if you have your own waterproof over the ankle boots, you can opt to use theirs if you just don’t want yours to get mucky!)

A huge shout out to our guide, Quinn! Honestly, he’s what really made our experience so enjoyable. Gearing up went so smoothly we were able to spend more time on the glacier! Quinn made sure our safety was top priority. He was always there to assist us in trickier areas. It was awesome watching him carve out steps for us to cross areas others hadn’t traveled previously. Because of our extra time on the glacier, Quinn was able to take us to areas other groups don’t typically go. So awesome!! His wealth of knowledge, infectious enthusiasm and encouraging attitude was icing on the cake!

I one hundred percent recommend MICA Guides for any Alaskan adventure!

Good morning,
During our stay in Alaska, we were a little disappointed during the “Matanuska Glacier Tour” activity with MICA Guides. It was a 4 hour “Ice Fall Trek”.
We were a group of 6 with a significant difference in the physical condition of one of the hikers. The very friendly and competent guide had to constantly ensure the safety of this person during the walk. In fact, we only took a walk on the glacial moraine with very little elevation gain and long breaks. Not the feeling of an adventure or a fantastic moment, the photos made us dream!
The groups should be more homogeneous in terms of the physical capacities expected according to the effort so that the hike on the glacier meets the demand!
Furthermore, having to pay extra at the entrance to be able to enter the park in addition to the price of the excursion seems excessive to us (not insignificant: $47)

Our guide Dan is quite an expect - he knows all about glacier. He took extra care of the hikers making sure we would cross challenging areas, he knew all about where the dangerous dips, and showed us the unique and spectacular areas of the trail. We rate Dan 5 out of 5, and highly recommend him if you ever look for a good and capable guide.

We had an absolutely amazing time trekking on the Matanuska glacier all thanks to our awesome guide Quinn! Right from the start it was clear that he was super prepared and was very knowledgeable about the surrounding environment. He answered any and all questions and gave us great tips on how to safely navigate and climb the glacier. He took the time to meet all our needs, made sure we all felt good about it, and ensured we hit all the best spots on the glacier. The views and ice formations were incredible! Quinn was also so fun and easy-going. He made the whole trek really enjoyable. Thanks for the amazing experience!

Made this reservation online. We arrived and were greeted warmly. The check-in process went well. We were introduced to Samantha our guide. She walked us through equipment and what to expect with glacier hike.
She took great care to ensure we were safe and had an excellent experience.
My husband and I are I’m our mid 60’s and felt confident with this activity.
I can highly recommend MICA guides as they specialise in small group (we were part of a group that totalled 5) excursions onto the ice. During the hike I saw other groups with way more participants than I would have been comfortable with.

We planned our Alaska trip with a couple of days in Anchorage before starting our cruise tour. We wanted to do something fun and different on one of those days, so we were lucky enough to find out about the Matanuska Glacier Hiking with Mica Guides. With Bailey as our guide, crampons on our feet and crisp glacial air to breathe we set off for a magnificent adventure across a glacial lake, snow, ice crevasses, and the marvels of glacier building and receding on a daily basis. It was certainly an experience getting our "ice" feet under us with the micro crampons, but our footing became more sure as we learned to trust the equipment. Bailey was a wonderful teacher/naturalist and guide. One highlight of the trek was tapping into the glacier to drink pure, cold glacial ice water. We observed the various ways crevasses are created with trickling water seeking the path of least resistance to ice arches that had recently collapsed with the warm weather. This was a most enjoyable trek for us! Prepare to get wet! :-) Beware if you plan to make the trip from Anchorage, plan to make it a whole day trip unless you plan to stay up near the glacier. It took 2.5 hours to get there from Anchorage due to road construction. There are very few places to stop to eat or take a break once you leave Palmer. Fantastic excursion with a wonderful guide. Kudos to MICA Guides for putting together this trek!

I would recommend Nova over Mica guides. We had a flat tire and missed our prepaid glacier hike with Mica guides. Mica had spots available on a later tour the same day but wanted us to pay $300 again for 2 adults and 1 child to rebook. Be careful if you book with Mica in advance. They will take your money and throw their nonrefundable policy at you no matter what tge circumstances. Nova on the other hand gave us a 10% discount after learning about the day we had without us even asking. Nova also does not charge full price for children under 12. Nova is a company with great customer service. Highly recommend them!

From the moment we entered the outpost driveway, where a few guides were walking to work for the day, to the gear return after our all day adventure, the friendliness and customer service of MICA Guides stood out. We felt confident in our guide Will's experience and knowledge, and he delivered a safe, awesome, and energetic ice climbing excursion, even with a minor gear issue through no fault of his, with patience and professionalism. We would definitely return to MICA Guides if our travels take us near the Matanuska Glacier again. If you are in the area, don't miss out on this opportunity. Our guide Will was truly the best guide ever!
