It is worth spending in the area a few days as there is so much to see and do. The distances are not large, but the roads are winding and there are some places where you can stop and trek, not to mention that it is definitely worthwhile visiting the various viewpoints in the morning as well as in the afternoon. The villages are welcoming and there are few foreign tourists. I would recommend to stay in Xiapu and use it as a base for day trips. Seaweeds, oysters, sea cucumbers are all raised here and exported all over the world. Not only the scenery but also the people are very interesting. Amazing territory.

Easy day trip from Fuzhou to Xiapu. Bus to Xiapu took 2hrs 30mins. To return from Xiapu to Fuzhou, I took the train instead and it took only an hour. Also, hired a taxi driver for half-day at 300rmb and would recommend the same guy, Lin to fellow travelers. He is contactable at 15359700706. He is a Xiapu native and knows the place well, having been hired by local photography hobbyists to popular spots for sunrise, sunset, farms, villages etc. What i like most was his quiet and unassuming work attitude.

The Xiapu County, in the Fujian Province near the coast, is a hot spot for photography during certain parts of the year. It is usually very crowded in late Oct./ early Nov., particularly during the weekends. The county has numerous scenic spots eg Dong Bi, Xia Qing Shan, Ba Chi Men, Xiao Hao, Beiqi, Nan Wan, Yangjiaxi, Sha Wan, etc. Transportation is not too difficult as Xiapu is accessible via the CRH Railway system. Once in Xiapu, one needs local assistance eg a group tour bus for visiting the various venues. If one could get assistance from a local expert, it would be an added advantage, as the scenes are quite dependent on sunrise, sunset, tidal waves, etc. As Xiapu county is getting more popular I am starting to see foreign tourists in the area eg taking sunrise pictures at Beiqi.

With its very curvy shoreline, Xiapu provides abundant photography opportunities. To support tourism the local government has built many observation decks, bridges and buildings. The kelp pole in mudflat is a quite unique scene as well as the fishing "farm" and houses. I was there for sight seeing and photo taking for three days. Had great time. Also impressed by the local seafood and tourist services.

We took a high speed train from Fuzhou to spend one day in Xiapu County. We hired Lin, the photographer's guide. One tip: do remember to bring your passport to buy your train ticket. We had no idea what to expect in Xiapu... but it was worth taking a day trip to explore.
You can WeChat with Lin to arrange. +86 153 5970 0706. WeChat automatically translates to English so it was easy for us to communicate. Plus there is always Google Translate. Lin is very reliable. He met us at the train station and joined us for a seafood lunch.

We came here wanting to see the beautiful beaches where farmers work, armed with just a location name- Bei3 Qi2. Many locals tell us there are no public transport n we need to take motorcycle-trishaw or private car.
Unconvinced, we went to South Bus Terminal on a tip that there might be busses there. Turned out it does not. Hence we took local bus to Da4 Jing1 village in Chang2 Cun1 county. Along the way, we can see fantastic views of the beach where the locals work. If time permits, we'd hv stopped for the night.
Instead we proceed on to Da Jing and walked out 15min to the beach. It has similar views to that of Bei Qi, though it was raining and misty.
Next day noon, back at the Southern Bus Terminal, we asked for motorcycle-trishaw to Bei Qi beach (it's 20min ride away), & was quoted Y20 per way, Y10 per hr of waiting (free, if waiting is within half hr). That was the cheapest, as another quoted Y80 including waiting time.
Spent an hr taking photos though the views were not like what we saw online....
Most important tips here: otw out we saw local bus just outside of Bei Qi beach area- bus going to Song1 Shan1. For those with time to spare, u may wish to consider that.
Bei Qi is good for sunrise photos- with the sun rising up behind the hill in the distance. Otherwise, Chang Cun county region is a good place to go too.
In any case, you will definitely need 300-400mm lens for decent photo-taking.

Xiapu is a hidden gem. The stares and excitement that followed us down every alley of the little fishing village suggest this is not a regularly frequented tourist destination. A short walk up from the seaside leads you to a view across the ocean. The fishing nets that are left in the water leave an unusual and beautiful landscape view for miles across the ocean. The most picturesque place I visited while living in Fujian. Well worth the hassle getting here and a cheap taxi from the nearest big town was easy enough to sort out. It rang a bit of the hills have eyes when we walked further in to the village and found a cat hung from it's neck with a firework stuck up it. That was our queue to leave.

Wasn’t sure what to expect. Was drawn to the region as a photographer after seeing some of the shots published in recent years and digging into where they were from. The main city of Xiapu is much larger than a “small village” and full of good food.
As I was drawn by the prospect of photography, I looked into tours and found the number that were available via English searches were tiny. Luckily, read the previous reviews here about Lin and reached out to him. He was half the price per day of the other primary tour company and provided a high quality and diligent level of service. The entire photo establishment in the region is quite heavily institutionalized. There are viewing platforms, entry fees, and a mish mash of authentic / organic sights and more artificial ones. Many also have models who, for a fee will walk in the scene, pilot a boat out for the photos, etc.
In theory you could self drive or take regional buses but knowing the tide, when and where to be for sunset or sunrise, etc and being able to cover the fairly large region where everything sits makes having a driver and guide well worth it.
I reached out to Lin via WeChat and he got back to me within an hour: +86 153 5970 0706 i was solo, but he can also apparently hands groups up to 8 or so folks.

This is a very interesting tour of the seaweed farm.
Take a train from Fuzhou South to Xiapu station. When you get off the train take a taxi (15-30 minutes drive, cost about 30 Yuan) to coordinates 26.881338, 120.058486 . Once the taxi driver see that you are a tourist he will know where to take you... , There is a guy there that has a boat and can take you to see the seaweed farm, however, he may be on a tour and you will need to wait for him to come back. There are people on the beach fixing fishing nets that can help you with information (use google/Microsoft translate...). Once done the boat owner ordered us a taxi to go back to the train station. The boat tour is about 1 hour.

Is there any local photographer who organizes tours at a reasonable price? Almost all tours are like $2,000

As far as I know there is no local organized photography tour, especially for foreign tourists. You may try the Chinese travel site Ctrip.

I am planning to visit Xaipu next March or April. I would love to enjoy the beauty of the landscape but there is some reviews of disappointment due to weather. Appreciate some advise which is a better month to pick, March or April? Tks!

you need to be very lucky to get what you want in Xiapu lol. For sun rise shooting, I would recommend to go on October. There is just too much cloud in Spring.

Hi Isabel, I am looking to hire a drive in Xiapu and came across your post. Does Lin knows where to take you for good photography spots/views or do you have to instruct him on exactly where to go?

Hi Glider, Lin is an excellent driver. However, most drivers will take you to the popular spots where and when everyone goes. If you're ok with that, fine. But if you're not, you'd better make that clear to Lin that you want to seem something different or go when and where it is not inundated by other tourists. Just saying. Lots of the places Lin took us to initially were packed with hundreds of other camera wielding tourists from Taiwan, Japan, Korea and other areas in China. They didn't seem to mind that everyone was taking the same photograph or that village scenes with locals in traditional garb were completely staged.

Hello, are there any decent hotels in Xiapu, to save journeying from Fuzhou every day ?
Thank you

Hi Smilesdom. We searched around and found the Dijing International Hotel right in Xiapu city. The rooms were clean and modern. Breakfast was excellent, if you like Asian style breakfasts, which are very comprehensive.
