About
Designed by Sir Charles Barry, architect of the Houses of Parliament, this is considered to be one of the finest Victorian homes still in existence, which houses fine furniture and works of art. Today, the Castle is the home of the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon and is known around the world as the real home of 'Downton Abbey'.

How the other half live
Aug 2021 • Couples
Great visit. The gardens house and everything was spot on. A bit of a queue to the Egyptian museum but that was of course due to Covid and the number of people allowed in the basement at once.

Well worth a visit whether a downtown abbey fan or not.

All we Expected and a bit more
Nov 2021 • Couples
All of it.. As Avid Downton fans.. BUT... in my opinion I felt the particular Guide we had was Anti Downton... Reams and Reams of info on the vast painting collection and the families who have lived there, with a small sprinkling of Downton she was very very nice and her knowledge was amazing. When she was telling us how Downton 'took over' the House, the grounds, how they were not allowed to speak to ANYBODY in costume and how Rude 2 of the cast were, but how Lovely Mrs Hughes was, and Maggie Smith, I could just sense there was some ill~feeling there. Walking along the Gallery was Amazing looking down too into the Great Hall. All in all it lived up to and excelled out expectations. Long Drive from Essex though

Fabulous place, private tour underwhelming
Nov 2021 • Couples
Gorgeous setting, fabulous grounds. We had a private tour of the house which was wholly underwhelming for the £250 price tag (for 2 people). The tour was over in an hour and the afternoon tea (served up fast food/canteen style) was without occasion. We would go back and see the house in the future but the private tour was not worth the money at all. Not good value for money

A must for fans of Downton Abbey.

This is a fantastic place to visit, especially if you have watched Downton Abbey. Lady Carnarvon’s personal welcome and introduction was an unexpected treat. The guides were very knowledgeable and extremely friendly as were all the staff we met.

Strongly suggest you include afternoon tea with you visit. The quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff added so much to our visit.

The only criticism is that my daughter is a wheelchair user and unlike places like Chatsworth there is no lift to help her access the upstairs bedrooms and dressing rooms. She just about made it up the stairs and was so happy to have her Lady Mary “ will I do Carson?” Moment on the way down.

TV-tastic ...
Aug 2021
The castle would be interesting architecturally even if it wasn’t associated with a popular TV series, but the Downton experience just adds to the visit. The room interiors are stunning and the sense of history, intimate. It was pouring with rain on the day we visited so we didn’t get to explore the grounds sadly.

Good but pitiful afternoon tea
Oct 2021 • Couples
We went for the downton abbey themed tour which cost £125pp and included an afternoon team. The tour was rather informative and we enjoyed it. The afternoon tea however was not up to scratch. I’ve included a picture so you can make your own opinions but I felt it left much to be desired. On the website it states it’s served by a butler, in reality you pick up a tray with the food ready in a small plate for you. The cakes were nice but the creme brûlée wasn’t quite right. The soup was nice but you were only allowed a ‘shot’ of soup when it really wouldn’t cost much to let us have a bowl of soup with a piece of bread especially considering the price you pay. Would I go again? Maybe, but only for one of the cheaper tours at around £20pp and certainly wouldn’t get an afternoon tea from there. All the staff however were lovely. Just a shame about the afternoon tea.

WW Festival Weekend is a must!
Oct 2021
We had no idea we had all this additional entertainment in addition to Highclere and all that stands for! I would highly recommend a festival experience at Highclere. There are bonuses in the house in addition to all the other creative entertainment Lord and Lady Carenarfon provides with these passes. What a memory!

Fading film set
Oct 2021 • Solo
Don’t pretend it is anything special except that the fee is five times normal entrance fee
The special entrance with 18 other people was still crowded and the guide rushed through downstairs rooms with very little information. Even less about the upstairs rooms we could peep into while he waited downstairs
The tour was over in just over an hour with no time to really look
The Egyptian exhibition was interesting
The tea that was included did not take into account a person who is gluten intolerant and so I had sparkling water
The goodie bag contained the book written by the Countess lots of nice recipes
After a round trip of 200 miles I might just as well have watched episode of Downton
Oh well seen it now

They so money driven. Little care for the visitors' experience. Not worth for the money. Join National Trust instead.

It's not worth the money. They were super controlling and didn’t let us take any pictures for "privacy reason". Surely, they care so much about their privacy when they use their private home for movie set and tv shows.. They are very money driven. I was so let down when they didn't allow eat my packed luch on their ground.. I had to eat in the parking lot. It was all about money for them. Highly commercialised. Little care for the visitors.

Simply Amazing!
Sep 2021 • Couples
Went for the Night at the Movies theme 1920’s day and had the most amazing time. We were treated as guests by her ladyship who was in the middle of it all dancing and socialising with us like we were her personal guests. She had no aires or graces just a down to earth lovely lady. I spent way to much money at the gift shop (because I bought just about everything) and when I ordered her new book from their website it was lovely to see that she had signed the book personally for me. It’s the little things that matter and she covers them all! Can’t wait to go back again. We are big Downton fans (seen it from start to finish about 20 times now) and we were lucky enough to stay at the nearby hotel where all the cast stay, we had Maggie Smiths suite that she uses just to top off our visit! Simply amazing.
