About
Caherconnell Stone Fort, situated 1km south of Poulnabrone dolmen in the heart of the Burren Ireland, offers you the opportunity to visit an exceptionally well - preserved example of the stone forts or stone ringforts which are to be found in the Burren Ireland. The fort is in its original state. Its position, overlooking virtually all-surrounding areas suggests a defensive settlement. Archaeological excavations take place each summer in association with 'CAFS' - Caherconnell Archaeological Field School- an International Field School accredited by NUI, Galway. As well as a trip to the Fort, visitors can also take in the Burren's Premier Sheepdog Demonstrations at Caherconnell, enjoying the combined skills of the farmer and the border collie as they work in the natural habitat of the Burren. The sheepdog demonstration times are available at https://caherconnell.com/sheepdog/demo-calendar/

- gdubelProvidence, Rhode Island3 contributionsAmazing Place to visit!Class act all around! Tom and the entire crew made our family feel welcome on a rainy blustery day! The tour was so engaging, site so interesting, and Cafe so warm and cozy that we all could not have experienced a better day! Thank you very much!Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 10, 2023
- Fg82Naples, Florida100 contributionsGreat experience with Sheepdogs at Caherconnell fortVery nice experience seeing the sheepdogs at work. Good explanation on their training and what they are expected to do. The fort tour is also enjoyable and educative. Highly recommend it. We did the 11 am demonstration and fort tour and then went to Doolin and the Cliff of Moher before heading to Lahinch for an overnight stay at Vaughan lodge. It was a wonderful day. .Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 29, 2023
- Kat MurphyNewry, United Kingdom2 contributionsA unique experience that is a must on a trip to Co. Clare. We visited Caherconnell Fort as part of our trip to Galway. We attended the afternoon sheepdog demonstration and honestly could not recommend it highly enough. We were introduced to all four dogs and got to see them all in action, rounding up and then separating the sheep. We then got an ‘up close’ experience of the sheep, which was so informative. Our guide for the duration was superb and we couldn’t believe he was only 17! My 12 year old nephew said it was one of the best things he has ever done - he even got the opportunity to direct one of the dogs, something he will remember for a long time. Great to see a farm diversifying in such a unique way. The viewing areas even come with a covering, ensuring the weather doesn’t impact on your visit. We had coffee from the coffee shop before leaving and the staff there were so lovely too (especially the lady with the Armagh connections, who spotted my nephew’s jersey!), and the gift shop has something for everyone - for us it was a sheep wearing a peaked cap!Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 5, 2023
- Anne5 contributionsHighly recommend this FUN, informative experience! We were thrilled to see this was close to our B&B and so excited to see the dogs, having two of our own (very unskilled) dogs waiting for us at home. This completely lived up to the hype in the reviews and exceeded our expectations. We took the stone fort tour beforehand and it was very comprehensive, but because it's not an extensive space, it didn't drag on and our tour guide, Tom, did an excellent job of keeping us on pace despite chatty group members (every group has at least one...). Great for adults and kids alike. Would visit again!Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 26, 2023
- Mimi L1 contributionDon't miss it!!We are six adults in our 30's and the sheepdog demonstrations were by far one of our favorite activities while we visited Ireland!! The instructor was so funny and all the staff were so nice. We couldn't stop laughing watching Rose goof off the whole demonstration as well. So informative and SO fun!!!!Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 2, 2023
- Rita K1 contributionWell worth a visitToday my friend and I went to Caherconnell Fort for lunch and what a treat it was!! I had the most delicious chicken caesar salad I have ever eaten. It was freshly prepared and a generous portion. The staff were friendly and helpful during a very busy period. Unfortunately we didn't have time for a tour or to see the sheepdog demonstration, but we will definitely be back, and it will give us another opportunity to have chicken caesar salad again. I would highly recommend Caherconnell Fort for a day trip or even just for lunch.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 10, 2024

- Climber012723863831 contributionBut first, DOGS! <3Great experience, learning about the sheep, the dogs, the different calls and training tactics. The hosts were all so nice and happy to answer any and all questions. The main guy was entertaining yet informative. The dogs happily came over to us after they were finished showing off for some ear scratches and belly rubs. So glad we did this!Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 25, 2024
- Joanna G4 contributionsSheep Dog Experience and laughs, History of The BurrensThe dogs were amazing, the dog handler did a great job in spit of the weather, was very knowledgeable of the breeds of sheep and handled the dogs nicely. He had a great sense of humor as well, and so did the tour guide. It made the visit very enjoyable!Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 26, 2024
- Claire H14 contributionsAn awesome experience! The tour of the ring fort was very interesting, lots of history and the story of the archeological dig by one of the archeologists who had found some artifacts herself. The sheepdog demonstration was very well done. The sheep farmer explained how the dogs were trained and the length of time it took to train a dog. He demonstrated the various whistle calls and maneuvers the dogs make, as well as having them do a live demonstration. Also got to meet and pet the dogs afterwards. We loved itVisited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 13, 2024

The sheepdog trials can be seen in most weather conditions, Caherconnell have fantastic facilities to protect the guests. The sheepdog handler John was an excellent host with control over 4 dogs that you would be just left speechless with. I would recommend the sheepdog trials to every age group it was a day we wont forget

Hi 344deniso, thanks for your review. We aim every day to provide visitors with great experiences and we are delighted yours was good. It takes a lot of work to train the dogs to such a high standard it's wonderful that our visitors enjoy seeing them.

We enjoyed watching the sheepdog demonstration and learning how the dogs are trained. We observed the dog herding the sheep through a gate and around multiple fences in response to the herdsman whistle. Later four dogs worked together again responding to a unique whistle for each dog. While voice commands work well, a whistle can be heard at greater distance.
We were shown different types of sheep and learned their optimal uses. Appreciate learning about why Irish sheep have colors sometimes.
The demonstration is outside but spectators can stand under a canvas overhead to protect them from rain. The herdsman uses a microphone so everyone can hear. After the demo he answered questions and had the dogs sit for pictures. We really enjoyed this as a highlight of our visit to Ireland, especially as this family farm has been in operation for over 300 years. Farming is challenging and I felt this was a unique way to share a bit of local culture and history.
On the day we visited we chose to not visit the stone fort due to rain. Maybe next time.

This experience is not to be missed. The tour of the ring fort by a very knowledgable guide made history of the fort and of Ireland come alive, and also gave one an appreciation of the passion of the archeologists who explored the site. The Sheepdog demonstration likewise was inspiring - the work of the dogs, and of their trainer who afterwards took time ot answer many questions and clearly loved his animals and lifes work.

The sheep dogs are the star of this establishment! The demonstration was enjoyable, but being able to pet and interact with these sweet animals was truly a highlight for me. They love scratches and belly rubs. The demonstration shows how smart these dogs are and how hard they work together. The wind was brisk the day I visited, but there was ample sweaters, sweatshirts, and hats for purchase. There is a small cafe that was very good and had a nice selection of sandwiches, soups, coffee, and treats. The visit to The Burren was informative. Our guide was entertaining and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this experience for anyone traveling to Ireland!

I thoroughly enjoyed my self guided tour of Caherconnell Cashel. The family owners have created a lovely visitors centre with a nice cafe, small shop and an audio visual room which shows two short films before you visit the Fort itself.
It's a fascinating insight into life in the 10th and 11th century and you can clearly see the outline of the houses that lay therein. There is a firepit near the entrance and two graves just to the right of the entrance that have interesting stories.
They give you a quite superb 28 page colour booklet with your entrance ticket that makes the whole site easy to navigate and much clearer to understand.
The circular enclosing walls are the most dramatic sight, they are quite amazing with no mortar whatsoever being used
Big free car park, good toilet facilities and the food in the cafe was excellent.
A superb visit, I really enjoyed it.

Great stop. I highly recommend it. The guide taking us around the fort was great. You can just walk around it yourself but why! So much more enjoyable with the guide. He was excellent.
LOVED the border collie demonstration. As an owner of several border collies over the years I know they’re very intelligent but to see them working like this never ceases to amaze me. So very impressive and the connection between the dogs and the handler is just such a joy to watch.
Delicious scones and coffee in the cafe after.

Tom told us about the stone fort and was extremely interesting. He interacted with the group in a very pleasant and humorous way. He was great! Aaron was also outstanding, educating the group on the skills needed to train the border collies to herd the sheep and cows. The demo was amazing! The dogs are awesome 🤩 And the gift store was the best for quality gifts and souvenirs. Don’t miss this; it’s so worth it… a definite highlight of our trip!

Hi, visiting tomorrow. Do you get to pet the dogs/sheep?
Written October 17, 2019
The trainer brought the dogs and sheep out to a fenced area After the demonstration and you could pet them over the fence. Some of the small lambs got out and we’re wandering around amongst us.

Hi - we will be visiting Doolin and the Burren area in the 2nd week of June. Are advance tickets needed if we want to see the sheepdog demonstration or can we just purchase tickets at the Fort on the day we visit? Thanks.
Written May 23, 2017
You can just buy your tickets upon arrival at the fort, but check the website for the sheepdog demonstration times for the day you plan on visiting.
Written May 24, 2017
Hi folks, visiting from Australia in October.
How long do the sheepdog trials go for? How far is the fort from the trials and how long to look around?
Thanks
Written February 11, 2017
There is a restaurant and bathrooms at the site. The sheepdog demonstration is behind the restaurant and lasts about 30 minutes. The site is a 3 minute walk and how long you spend depends on your level of interest.i think we walked around the while site in about a half hour but you can spend longer .

I was looking at some reviews for things to do in the Burren. Ireland. We are going next week and I was wondering what you would recommend seeing, We will have 2 1/2 days to spend in Galway and The Burren. I was thinking The Cliffs of Moher, Poulnahbrone Dolmen, Doolin and the tower and maybe a castle/ruin or cave. But the shepherding site I read about on reviews sounds like fun too. We will be renting a car for two days. Also, is everything is open or deo we need to make reservations on Sundays and Mondays? Thanks a lot!

If there on a Sunday sometimes finding place to eat can be tricky as usually all you can get for dinner is a toastie. One of our favorite ruins is Kilmacduagh Abbey. No admission, always "open". You can get visitor guide from house across the road. Burren Visitor Center is nice but probably closed this time of year but worth checking. Dolmen is also always "open" with no admission. If going to Cliffs of Moher we prefer seeing them from one of the boat tours out of Doolin rather than Visitor Center because then you can really see the whereas from Center you're on top. Doolin is great for traditional Irish music if going on this time of year. Check with the locals.
